Thoughtfully Willow said “You’re point was that you have sat some sort of test and have failed it. But that’s because you’re colouring the parameters with your view of failure. You’ve decided that it was a test and that you didn’t meet the criteria to pass it. But I’m curious, in your mind what would have been a pass in that situation?”

Well, that as the question, wasn’t it? “How can I make the tough choices if I freeze? I guess a part of me feels like a pass would have been to deal with the situation, compartmentalize, and then work through everything afterwards. We don’t always get the luxury of pulling ourselves out of a situation. How can I be a good first officer if you don’t know which Dira you’re going to get in any intense situation. I don’t know, after twenty years I kind of expected myself to be more steadfast than this.”

“It wasn’t expected and in other situations you’d have more time and resources and personnel at your disposal. So I would get the Dira that can look at the situation as a whole from a position where it’s not a personal matter. Maybe that’s why you froze because in another time if place that could be you…you’re supposed to be my right hand and hold me accountable for when I get too deep in. If anyone failed it was me for not being the same for you when you needed it as I’m supposed to.”

Dira shook her head. “Things happened too fast, and to be fair, I didn’t know I was too deep in until it was too late.” She gave Willow a lopsided smirk. “Okay, I think I just made your point.”

Willow smiled in return looking a little smug.

“So… clean slate, sort of. But I guess we now know that when it comes to Intelligence, you need to keep me in another room.”
