Snip
Dr. Mariah Grayson arrived at the mobile hospital in short order after receiving Iven’s update, making sure to bring supplies with her as suggested. Approaching Nurse Lampkin, she offered, “How may I help?”OOC Lori: I could work with either the little girl or the woman. Any preference? Full disclosure: Adults are my RL clinical comfort zone, but if Iven would prefer Mariah see the little girl, let me know. :-)

Séan was right behind Mariah and he had a bag slung over his shoulder with extra medical supplies as well. As Alexis said extra never hurt. He set the bag down within reach of Nurse Lampkin and waited for her to answer Dr Grayson.
OOC: I’m fine with treating the girl.
CoP Iven
Lampkin gave the triage nurse look and then rolled her eyes. “Grab a chart, Doctor,” she grumbled having to stop her normal duties. Doctors can be so difficult. With a gesture from her off hand she motioned towards the stack of PaDDs. “Two where called in for a psych consult. There is an old lady over there with a self medicating husband who may need a house call, and then that one.”
Her nod was directed towards the little girl now swinging her feet under the chair. “Don’t know anything about her other than she likes lollipops and is reasonably well behaved.”

Séan smiled at Lampkin as he went to pick up the PaDD detailing the girl, with what little information it had on it. At the mention of lollipops he kicked himself for not bringing any but made a mental note to requisition some for the next supply delivery. He moved towards the girl swinging her feet under the chair and crouched down to make their eyes level. “Hi there, I’m Séan. What’s your name?”
CoP Iven
Seeing the little girl was being well taken care of, Mariah reached for the chart detailing what had been cleaned so far. There wasn’t a whole lot, but it wasn’t difficult to discern the older woman was in emotional pain. She approached, mindful not to invade the other woman’s space, but also coming close enough to provide a bit of privacy. No doubt they would have to find somewhere else to talk more privately, but initially, she had to gain the woman’s trust. “Hello,” she offered. “My name is Mariah. I understand you need some help?”
~Dr. Mariah Grayson, Psychiatrist
The older woman looked more or less despondent. “Who doesn’t need help here?” she said looking around and gesturing. After a moment of silence she added, “I am Nohun. I… I need some medication for my husband. Something for the pain.” She glanced around, “He is in a lot of pain.”
GM Wombat
“You’re right, Nohun,” Mariah replied gently, “you wouldn’t be here if you didn’t need help. I’m sorry, that was a silly question, wasn’t it?” She gestured for Nohun to follow her to a moment to a relatively quiet space where some privacy could be achieved. Once they were a bit more settled, Mariah took the opportunity to look the woman over as thoroughly as she could without being intrusive. She’d wait for permission for anything like a proper scan. “Will you tell me more about your husband and the pain he’s in? For example, when it started and where it is?”
~Dr. Mariah Grayson, Psychiatrist
Nohun took her left hand and spread the thumb and pinky wide then lifted the thumb to her lips, thrusting the pinky into the air in a pantomime of drinking something. “A life of it,” she explains, “Didn’t get better when his brother died in the collapse. Does it ever I wonder? Anyway not much of a line up to help an old man with failing everything, is there? We all die eventually just hate seeing him like this. So much pain, and confusion. I suppose there isnt much time left for him.”
She sighed, “So something to help him sleep would be nice.”

Mariah was no stranger to the mixture of resignation and pain in another’s voice, but that didn’t mean she could no longer be affected by it. She was particularly struck by how valiantly it seemed the woman was trying to remain stoic while also clearly suffering.
Grayson knew she needed to tread carefully lest Nohun feel rejected, but at the same time, she knew she owed such honesty candor of her own.
“Given all you’ve both been through, I can’t fault either of you for the way you’ve coped. I am very interested in helping both of you, if you’ll allow it, but I’m afraid just getting your husband something to help him sleep when his body’s functions are already slowed down by alcohol will only hasten his demise. Might be willing to come here or allow me to meet him for a proper exam? He’s under no obligation to do anything he doesn’t want to, of course, but I believe everyone is deserving of care and attention, no matter their age or their struggle.”
~Doctor Mariah Grayson, Psychiatrist
If Grayson was paying attention there was a brief flicker of something at “will only hasten his demise.” It was quick, and complex, and definitely something simple, but there was still something that was quickly blinked away before Nohun shrugged. Sitting in silence for a moment she said, “If you want to come you can. He needs peace.”
“The trip isn’t far but, you will have to excuse the accommodations. A once proud people laid low as it were.”

“I am not going to evaluate the accommodations,” Grayson assured. “I only wish to help.” She hesitated then, the momentary flicker of something in the other woman’s eyes coming to mind. She wasn’t sure what it was and couldn’t say for certain whether she needed to be concerned, but it was enough to remind her that she couldn’t just go off on her own, no matter how much she wanted to help or how much she believed she was acting in accordance with her duties and ethical obligations. Being in Starfleet meant following orders, and that meant seeking permission. “I must inform my superiors what I’d like to do and make sure I am free to join you. No matter what, I will make sure we do all we can to help you.”
OOC Lori: it occurs to me Grayson might not be free to leave. Would it make sense for me to indicate getting permission?
~Dr. Maria Grayson, Psychiatrist
OOC: Was this directed at me? I mean I am all for doing what makes sense for your character and the story. You want to leave you go for it!
Zoi stood outside the Psyche area for just such a purpose. She and several security officers had taken up residence outside in order to facilitate home visits as necessary.
Haven, CoS
After making sure her downtrodden patient wouldn’t flee, Grayson approached the chief of security in askance. “Ma’am, could you spare one of your detachment to go with me to this woman’s home? Her husband is struggling with alcoholism and possible other medical concerns, but he’s unable to come here. I don’t wish to turn her away, but I recognize you may not wish for me to go alone.”

OOC Lori: I wasn’t sure who to direct the question to, but our chief of security was nice enough to help give Grayson a way forward. I was just going to see if Haven would reply, but if not I can press forward.
Zoi looked at Dr Grayson and listened to her question. She smiled and nodded. “I am currently available for just such a task Dr. Grayson. IF you wish to leave immediately, then lead the way.”
Haven, CoS
Mariah met the security chief’s smile with one of her own. “Thank you, ma’am. I promise not to keep you any longer than necessary. I’m not entirely sure what I am walking into. I will just go get her now. Her name is Nohun.”
It didn’t take long for Mariah long to lead the way back to where she had left one of her would be patients. “Nohun, this is my shipmate. She is in charge of security aboard the ship and she has agreed to come with us, as I am not supposed to leave on my own. Would you mind leading the way?” It was not exactly a lie, but Mariah didn’t like the idea of going by herself. It was just a gut feeling. She decided to let Haven introduce herself, not wanting to presume what she would offer.
~Dr. Mariah Grayson, Psychiatrist
The woman nodded and then smiled at Haven before mumbling something of an apology. The trip wasn’t far, as she promised, less than half a mile as the crow flies, but the ramshackle way the city was set up meant that there was a lot of wandering and at least two incidents where they just walked through someone’s house. There was a brief exchange of pleasantries, suspicious glances at Grayson and Haven and then on they went.
Generally people tried hard not to look directly at either of the star-fleet officers, either crossing to the other side of the narrow dirt walk ways that served as paths, or just looking straight ahead so as not to accidentally make eye contact.
Eventually they arrived. It was a shack really, some of the nicer ones that were set up with the previous limited supplies, as contrasted with some of the tents and scrap metal that was previously seen. When they got there and older man sat in a chair, eyes hooded as he stared at the door. “You’re late,” he grumbled with slurred speech when Nohun returned with help. “Did you bring food. I heard they are giving out free food. Chumps.”
