The sleep helped but Dira could feel the fatigue throughout her body and knew it was more an emotional symptom than a physical one. Turning to gaze at Zoi, Dira sighed. “I’m grateful you are here,” she said. “But I think I need to see a counsellor. I have to admit that it’s been a little while since I’ve had to deal with trauma resurfacing, but I suppose it was inevitable in this case.”

Zoi smiled softly and nodded. Her hand drifted from Dira’s shoulder and gently rolled along Dira’s back to rub there. “I think that’s smart, dearest. And how convenient for us that there is an entire department to choose from.” She wasn’t offended that Dira didn’t want to speak to her about the trauma. She was a little sad that she couldn’t help her. Zoi knew she lacked the skillset that Dira likely needed. It still stung a little, that she couldn’t wave a magic wand and fix everything.

It was hard at times to block out the noise as a telepath. Dira was actually worse at it than others thanks to quirks of her mixed heritage. But especially when she was closer to a person, having a thinner wall between her and that other person was actually desirable. So as Zoi’s thoughts traipsed through Dira’s mind, she turned to face Zoi, reached out, and rested a brown hand on her lover’s cheek. A smile pulled at her mouth. “You are always what i need,” she said, not even fully understanding her words as they came out. Normally so intentional everywhere in her life, Dira was surprised how impulsive she could be around Zoi. In some ways it reminded her of Paige, of that special skill of drawing out her inner child who was free from constraints. But Zoi was her own person and so despite the tiny inner conflict Dira was having with herself about moving forward romantically, she wasn’t holding herself back.
