Frigga ran back up and dropped the ball again and bounced back and forth in front of them, working her way backwards. Her agility never ceased to amaze Alexis. Being able to walk backwards and support a patient was one of the things the dog had had to learn, but watching Frigga made Alexis want to attach electrodes to her head and monitor her brain waves. “I’m sure Frigga would appreciate that. Of course I know one of the staff has gotten her to dig on command for them. She came home covered in so much dirt I was afraid it would clog the shower.” She reached down left handed and snagged the ball before it rolled out of reach and then chucked it behind them.

Again Willow chuckled as she ran. As the ball flew off overhead Willow caught sight of a glint in the light. She cast sideways glances at Alexis’ hand. “Some exciting news?” She asked gesturing to the source of the glinting.

Alexis followed Willow’s gesture to the solitaire on her hand. It wasn’t real, well it was, but it wasn’t actually her engagement ring, was it? Alexis remembered what Solomon had said when he told her to put it on. She was supposed to be comfortable with it. This wasn’t her ring though. That was locked in his desk for when she wanted it, when she was ready. She really couldn’t talk about it where someone might listen. She hated all this subterfuge and tricks and secret agent crap. If Solomon was there he’d probably ask her how she felt not what she thought. “Um…yeah I think so.” The reply was strange and Willow might realize that Alexis was still young and given everything else about her she was probably unbalanced even if Alexis didn’t realize it.

Slightly bemused looking Willow jogged along silently as if she needed the time to process the answer. “Well, congratulations to you both.” She finally settled on. As they rounded a path another body loomed stretching as they came. The teen was tall, blue haired and wearing what looked like basket ball shorts and a vest. Willow frowned as they approached.

“Thank you…” Alexis had the impulse to tell Taylor everything, all about it. That the ring wasn’t real, but it could be. Why she’d left the Ogawa to begin with, why she came back, about her and Solomon, but you never knew who was listening. She’d seen Taylor at her worst, under the influence of the fungus and she’d found the woman easy to talk to before. She seemed to ‘get’ Alexis or at least understand her when she talked with out a lot of blank stares and requests for her to repeat what she’d said. Thinking about it now, Alexis wondered if that’s what it would be like to have an older sibling.

“My word…you’re not actually up and moving during daylight hours are you Count Cai?” And asked as they neared and the boy fell in line with them. “Doctor Bonner, Cai. Cai, Doctor Bonner.”

“Ha, funny Will.” The boy said and gave Alexis a glance then a nod with his eyebrows raised in a sort of ‘hey ’ gesture.

Sometimes Alexis really wondered at how her own mind worked. Of course, Cpt Taylor had a younger brother. Alexis knew that from the medical records which would explain her earlier thought about having a sibling. “It’s nice to meet you.” Frigga saved her from further conversation by diving out of the bushes from the right, saw a new person and made some fast tight circles around him and dropped the ball at his feet and whined at him. If this boy was going to join her two companions maybe she’d get lucky and he could throw better than Alexis.

Despite his ‘I’m the cool guy’ façade Cai couldn’t help the slight curl that the side of his mouth took on seeing the dog. “You wanna play with the ball?” He asked bending to pick it up. He looked at it contemplatively, chewing the black metal run in his lower lip. “You know this ball and the game of fetch itself represents the futility of most endeavours within the universe. Constant chase for little reward and short endorphin hit.”

Willow rolled her eyes shaking her head. “Lighten up will you and throw the ball.”

With a grin the boy hurled the ball a fair distance and then immediately took off after it at a break run pace. Racing Frigga to find it.

Willow shook her head again. “So that was Cai.” She said as if this was both explanation and apology. “I’m not sure the botanists will be quite as forgiving of him damaging through their plants”
