After leaving her neuro program running on the gastropods, T’Pris headed back to the labs as she could track of the program from there. She knew that they had reached the Carraya system and she still wanted to do some in-depth scans of the planet. Entering the lab she headed over to her station and set up a high resolution scan on the planet below, focusing on the terrain surrounding the colony so that any away team would have all the pertinent information needed.

Tressex saw T’Pris enter and waved, but bent down over his own equipment. He was running a full spectrum analysis of the planet’s electromagnetic field, as well as a full climatological survey of the colony and it’s general vicinity. “How are our stowaways?” he asked without looking up.

“They appear to have stabilized now that we have set up a hydrogen rich environment as well as reunited them. They appear to have some empathic abilities and are bonded to each other. “T’Pris said as she watched her own scans.

“Really? That’s fascinating. That would lead to the hypothesis that as gastropod-like as they seem, they have some advanced neural development, yes?” Tressex asked.

T’Pris glanced at Tressex in surprise.”Yes, it does. I set up a program to map their neural pathways to see if I can see why they would have such an advanced neural network. It is unusual for a species that usually has a rudimentary one.”

The display gathered the topographical data and displayed it in map form with accompanying climate detail. The settlement was located about 165 kilometres east of the coast on the western most portion of the main continent. The region sat in the equatorial belt with a tropical monsoon climate. According to what little climactic history the Federation had so far on Carraya IV, the area the settlement was located in was moving from the shoulder season into monsoon season in the next few weeks. The rainfall had picked up and the overall daily temps had risen just slightly.

The Klingon/Romulan compound sat up slightly on the on the hill, with the clinic just down from it on a bit of a plateau in the fluvial (river) valley, resting about two kilometres from the water. Around the small plateau the clinic sat on, the entire area was formed of dense jungle, right up to the large river nestled in the middle of the steep valley.

The local area was mountainous, with relatively young and jagged mountains forming a system that ran northeast to southwest. The settlement was located in a transition zone where the tributary met up with a larger river. The confluence zone was located 15 kilometres down river, to the west. Continuing to move another 50 kilometres west, the river begins to accelerate its descent to sea level and the mountain valley opened more before becoming a short and narrow river delta that emptied into a long and winding inlet before itself emptying into the open ocean.

Zooming out a little, the valley was one of many similar ones amongst the mountain range and it was clear by just looking at the topography of the coast that the series of inlets and river valleys that made up the jagged coast were tectonically driven.

Tressex scowled at the topographical data. “I don’t like this. T’Pris, take a look at this.” and he spun the display so she could see it and pointed to the location of the settlement and clinic. “The clinic location downhill from the settlement means it is going to catch runoff from rain. This…” and tapped a few commands and pulled up the climatological data, “… shows that whole area is tropical monsoon climate. They are going to get torrential rains for days on end. And the location is simply a bulls-eye for mudslides and flooding.”

“Indeed, you are quite correct.”T’Pris said as she came over.”I thought so too at the beginning of the mission when I had a brief look at the clinic’s position. I wonder if we could convince them to move it up higher. Granted being in a river valley gives them the protection of having the mountains surrounding them but as you say it is a flood zone. But at a higher elevation with the correct structural supports would be better then at the bottom. I think we should put it in our recommendations for the CSO to pass along.” There was a beep from the padd that T’Pris carried and she tapped the screen to see that it was an alert from the program she had set up in the ICU in regards to the gastropods. She scanned it and said to Tressex,

“Fascinating. These gastropods are more highly evolved then their generic cousins. They have a highly developed sensory network and their neural centers are more dense with a network of neurons. “Her brow raised.”They also appear to have glands that secrete neurotransmitters.”She looked up at Tressex.”I believe this most definitely qualifies them as sentient, wouldn’t you agree?” She frowned as she pondered.”I wonder how we could qualify that.”

Tressex pondered for a moment and then said “Well, they show an empathetic bond with specific individuals, and show signs of depression when not in their company. They have been presented problems and took somewhat complex steps to solve them. They can understand, at least on an emotional level, the actions of others not of their species… yes, I would certainly classify that as sentient.” and he looked back at the colony and the issues arising from there. As an after-thought, he said “Do we know where they came from, yet?”
