Dira remained on the sofa for another hour before finally rising. She sniffed herself and grimaced. Gods, Kane was right: she needed a shower. With a sigh, she went off to clean herself up and perhaps after she’d be ready to face the present and the situation that had affected her. All she knew was that even if she herself didn’t have to do anything going forward, this would not be easy to brush off. It would require self-compassion and fortitude, and (where she could let people in), help. For the moment though, Dira was going to put one foot in front of the other and walk through the mire.

ugh Zoi stood for the third time in the last half hour and paced her quarters. At this rate she would wear a hole in her rug. What was she so antsy about? Zoi clenched and unclenched her fists and rolled her shoulders in an effort to relax them. It wasn’t like her to be this keyed up. It was then that her thoughts fell on Dira. Her eyes automatically turned in the direction she knew the woman was. Perhaps the feeling wasn’t coming from herself, but rather the woman she had been dating and growing close to. Something was wrong. It wasn’t danger per se, but something else. Emotional.

She picked up one of her hand knit blankets and a plant and headed out of her room towards the XO’s quarters. She didn’t much question whether or not Dira would want to see her. Zoi just felt the need within her to be there. It was only when she hit the chime that she fervently wished Dira would let her in.

Slipping a well worn Medical Academy t-shirt over her head, she froze as the chime sounded. Pulling it down to her hips, Dira blew out a breath and let her mind reach outwards. Zoi. her hurried steps closed the distance and she all but jabbed the control to open the door.

The door swished open.

Taking a step back, the next thing Dira knew, hot tears were flowing . There was no more numbness, only grief, fatigue, despair and a good dose of embarrassment. Kane hadn’t been wrong. She needed to get herself together and quick, and deal with the situation that had arisen, but… not yet. She wasn’t ready.

“Zoi…” she managed to say, before breaking down into wracking sobs.

She thought she had been prepared for what might await her within Dira’s quarters, but the sudden tears were enough to break her heart. Zoi rushed forward, putting the plant on the table beside the door and wrapped her arms around the woman she was coming to love. “Oh my dearest!” she whispered and held the woman tight. Even with the bulky knitted blanket on her arm, she held her. She gently stroked Dira’s hair and made soft reassuring sounds as she let the woman feel her calm presence and compassion for her.

Zoi turned her head and kissed Dira on the temple, the forehead, the cheek, and the mouth before hugging her again. “What can I do dearest? What do you need?”

Damn if she knew, but having Zoi there, with the physical contact and care she could both see and feel from the other woman calmed at least some of the fraught nerves in Dira’s psyche. Exhaling as she tried to calm her sobs, Dira stepped away and sank onto the sofa, patting the cushion beside her. “I don’t know exactly what I need,” she finally managed to say, though her voice was barely above a whisper. “But having you here does help.”

She followed Dira to the couch, unfolding the dark green blanket and putting it over Dira’s shoulders. It was well loved, soft and warm. She knew from experience that it had a way of just making things better when she was wrapped up in it and she hoped that it would do the same for Dira.

Leaning back and tipping her head up towards the ceiling, Myqian exhaled sharply, forcibly expelling the air in her lungs in a way that eased some of the tension within her. “There are things happening that I can’t entirely discuss myself, though you may want to talk to the Captain about them, but let’s just say that some old wounds have been unexpectedly ripped open and…” She forced herself to breathe through the rising sobs. “And it’s all too much. The grief, the anger. I don’t know what to do with it just now. Things I had thought I had dealt with, I know now alI just covered them over and moved on.”

“Well, you of all people know that happens when the mind needs to protect itself. Eventually we have to face trauma or it sneaks up on us doesn’t it.” She picked up Dira’s hand and placed it between her two. Zoi had no idea what the Captain had to do with all of this and wondered what that could mean. Surely if anyone should talk to her about things directly concerning Dira, it should be the woman herself? Confused, she put that aside for now and focused on the situation at hand. “You don’t have to talk about it if you don’t want to with me, but you probably should talk it through with someone.”
