She laughed softly and nodded. Had they met in the usual manner, would they have explored the chemistry between them? Clinical settings didn’t lead easily to flow and conversation. In one fell swoop, they had broken the ice and started the process of getting to know one another. It had been a fairly intimate setting. Good food, good lighting, mood music and a relaxed atmosphere could break down walls normally in place to keep professionalism in its place. Still, as she looked at the woman before her, Zoi had to shake her head. “No.” She said with a grin. “I think it would have taken us longer, but we would have gotten to this place eventually. There is a chemistry that we can’t deny and I certainly don’t want to.”

For a long moment, Dira gazed deeply at Zoi as she chewed, savouring both the food, and the woman beside her. “Neither do I,” she said softly.

“You know, for a long time after Paige died, I cut myself from others. I didn’t realize until a little while after I had requested a transfer just how isolated I had made myself. It was like the grief was so overwhelming that there wasn’t room for anything else. I could go to therapy sessions, but I think there was a small part of me that didn’t believe what we were doing, what we were talking. How could there exist a reality where she wasn’t there with me every day. I’ve had casual flings and sought company when I needed it, but this is the first time in what feels like forever that I feel ready for more. And it’s been the most wonderful revelation,” she said, a deep smile etched into her ridged features.

Zoi nodded. She understood well the desire to isolate and then realizing how detrimental it eventually had become to her own life. Her mother had become her sole companion, the doctors a distant second for far too long. She barely remembered the last person she had tried to have a relationship with. Had they been blond or a light brunette? Was it sad she couldn’t remember?

For a moment, she simply was distant, trying to pin it down, even as she said. “I can completely understand.” Then she shook herself and let the memories go, coming back to the present and the woman beside her. “It wasn’t even me that had noticed you know? Grieving my still living mother. My mother’s doctor was talking to me one day about a medical trial when he stopped talking for a minute and then asked me … completely serious… ‘When is the last time you had a date?’. I was so confused.”

“I can imagine,” Dira said with a grin, understanding completely.

She laughed and shook her head. “I thought he was trying to get me to have an affair with him. He quickly explained, but it made us both blush to even continue that conversation.”

With a light laugh, Dira squeezed Zoi’s hand again for a moment. “It can be awkward. Even the best therapist or doctor can get frazzled when there is a misunderstanding and crossing of signals. But in any case all the better for me, because I get a Zoi Haven that is curious and open to new experiences. Lucky me,” she said with a glimmer in her dark eyes.

Lifting her drink glass, Dira gazed at the beautiful women sat with her and was awed. “To taking chances and following our hearts, wherever they may lead.”

Zoi took up her glass and clinked it gently to Diras as she looked her date in the eyes. “To being open and allowing ourselves happiness.” She responded.

No matter how this relationship ended up, Zoi was glad she was finally letter herself be happy in whatever form that was. She may not be able to share that happiness with her mother, but she could enjoy it nonetheless. Life had been hard for far too long. Now was the time for her to finally step forward. It was a weird sensation but not a bad one.

She took a sip to finish out the toast and turned her attention to the food, trying more bites. “So, tell me about you as the therapist. Why did you choose that field?”
