Whenever she wanted, when this was over. She kissed him back and watched him put the box away. His words were reassuring despite her fear. She was focused enough now to realize it and be able to admit it. The man she knew as Soulis on the Hathaway was ultimately self centered and disparaging, and even charming and considerate when he felt it was needed. But the man she had seen at Intel was cruel, harsh, and terrifying. And the need to hide from him was almost overwhelming. She was suddenly and simply exhausted…and hungry. She had been in the lab for just under two shifts after working a regular full shift. But it wasn’t the long shifts making her tired. She smiled tiredly at him. “Do you think the lab supervisor will give me the rest of the day off?”Bonner
Kane locked the drawer and said “The Lab Supervisor already marked you as off for the rest of today and told GALEN to not let you back in after you leave. So yeah, I think the odds are good you get the rest of the day off.” He looked down at his current dress and said “But they, on the other hand, have to go shower and get dressed. So let’s go home, Lex.”
Kane
While he talked she did a visual scan of the lab, just to make sure, one more time, that everything was put to rights. It never hurt to double check and she’d been working with dangerous biocontainments. She side-eyed him, “You denied me access to the lab? For how long?” Okay so it wasn’t the first time Alexis had been locked out of a lab or sickbay to stop her from working, but it didn’t usually happen till after weeks worth of work. A few short weeks ago she would have rathered stayed in the lab than go back to her quarters, but home sounded so much better. She walked over to the door waiting for him. “Yeah, okay. Let’s go home.”

Kane walked up next to her and took her hand and began walking slowly. “I know you’re scared, Lex. And I know you hate the unknown. This is just a moment in time… and we’ll get through it. Okay?” he said as they meandered their way to their quarters.

Alexis threaded her fingers through his, heat spread up her arm, warm and reassuring. Little sparks of electricity trailed after the warmth and set welcome and familiar butterflies winging in her stomach. She looked down at their hands, her left held in his right, tattooed story against blank canvas, complete with ring. Alexis had several realizations in that moment. “I know they will. I trust you.”

Kane nodded once in acknowledgement and then they reached their room. Entering, Frigga was nowhere to be seen. “She went to Counseling. They had an issue with a child and they thought she would help.” As the door closed, he began to strip off his clothes, not looking at Alexis. “I’m on duty in an hour and a half.” was all he said as the shorts fell to the floor and he walked into the bedroom, a few seconds later the sound of the shower starting could be heard.
Kane
Alexis nodded to his comment about Frigga. They’d call when they didn’t need her. But if it was a child she’d probably be there all day. Alexis gaze followed him until he disappeared from sight in the other room. Several thoughts when through her head, all focused on ‘to be continued’ and who had possession of the water. No remark came to mind that she felt was decent enough to be uttered, but a minute later Alexis had dropped her clothes on the floor and pulled the stylus out of her hair, letting it down and stepped into the shower with him. His hair was wet and she took the shampoo and began to lather it into his hair.

Kane looked her up and down and then pulled her close to him. Arms around her, he didn’t speak but simply looked at her while she washed his hair. Tilting his head back, he began to rinse the shampoo out and he pressed himself against her. Finally lifting his head, he turned her so she was under the water and then began to wash her hair, running his fingers along her scalp and massaging every strand of hair.

Alexis wrapped her arms around his waist, her fingers trailing gently up and down his spine. She watched him quietly, memorizing every detail: the way the water made the scales on the dragon tattoo shimmer, how rinsing his hair had moved his hair out of his face and she could see both his eyes clearly, the warmth of his skin against hers, the way the water trailed over his shoulders and down his chest, the feel of his fingers against her scalp, and the utter quiet that said so much. And then she tilted her head all the way back to let the water rinse the shampoo out of her hair. Then her gaze never leaving his, she began lathering her hands with soap. Brown eyes lost in his green gaze she began to trace each tattoo, precisely and by memory, that she knew. Starting with the Mathusian funeral pyre, she traced across his chest and up his shoulder and his neck, the way she’d noticed before that he liked. The one across his right shoulder that he got when he joined the fire department, then the eagle tattoo and the scar it hid. Then the most important one, the one they tried to take away from him - the NDFD crest. She traced each red and blue stripes and all six of the stars. The pinup girl and the scar on his wrist. Her thumbs rubbed across the hard luck on each knuckle, the compass rose, the syndicate tattoo and the black bird. Down his sides, across his hip to the gypsie head. She pulled him under the water letting the soap be rinsed away. “I love you, Solomon.” And then she kissed him as the water rained down over them.
