Exactly one hour later, as promised, Alexis walked back into the science labs and looked around. “Mr. Golfink?” If he wasn’t there she’d get back to work anyway; she wasn’t waiting on him. But she was supposed to be ‘helpful’ and she’d said an hour and so here she was, back in the science labs, the work for R&D done, for the moment. Borchek had some work to do. His program had some flaws in it. The whole hour she’d tried to rack her brain for exactly what it was that Golfink was looking for. Her answer had obviously irritated him, but she didn’t know why. She looked around at the other science officers, “Anyone seen him?”

The small man sat in a corner propped up on a stool. When Alexis walked back in he smiled warmly and set aside the PaDD he was reading. Tapping the button on the side of his face he said, “Ah. Lieutenant. Did you get your thing done? Hopefully it was a huge success and not a…” He blew a raspberry and pointed downwards with his left thumb.

Everyone in the lab stopped and looked at Golfink like he’d grown a second head. Her work be anything but success? There were soft whispers around the lab. Alexis was totally oblivious to it. “Yes it was successful, but I’m not allowed to give the details. Now come this way, I will show you my favorite piece of equipment.” She led him over towards her work space and started keying up information on her console. She was making a supreme effort to understand what he was looking for from her. “I hope this is not redundant for you. My focus is medical research and my work over laps with medical some.” =/\=GALEN put in place reflective barrier to keep the light from other stations out, and lower the lights above this station to…78%.=/\= Then with a press of a button a 3D holographic image of a brain appeared. “Our research stations come equipped with 3D imagers. What you are looking at is a healthy Betazoid brain.” A quick tap of a button, “This one is from a victim of the Dominion occupation. This area here,” and with a pull and twist of her hands the image zoomed in, and they were standing in the middle of the image, “is the paracortex, where Betazoid telepathy is controlled. As you can see it is severely damaged. The Betazoid brain is extremely resilient and capable of healing itself of most injuries. I’ve been working on a way to utilize that natural ability to repair the damage done to victims of the Dominion’s scientists.”

Golfink nodded a little bit and kept recording. When she paused he added, “Walk me through it hmm? In detail. Pretend like I know what you are talking about yeah?”

Alexis shrugged that’s what she usually did, pretend people understood. Before she had left R&D Kane had stopped her and given her some advice, Approach Golfink like a hyper active squirrel that is easily distracted by giant shinny acorn. Show him something flashy and you’ll be fine. So that was what she was going to try and do. Alexis didn’t watch the media or news or vids or shows. She got all her current information from reading. “In a healthy typically developed adult Betazoid brain neurons appear to self heal and there is no significant research that identifies how. EEGs, MRIs and chemical blood analysis was done of healthy living volunteer patients to create a baseline and then the same tests were conducted on volunteer patients who had suffered neurological or physical brain damage. Neurological and hormonal scans were done of as part of a autopsies for the deceased whose families agreed. It was discovered that there was an increased presence of Psilosynine in the damaged areas of the brain.” Her hands moved and the brain they had been standing in was now replaced with a different one. “Psilosynine is usually only found in the paracortex. You see it here lit up in orange, tracing it shows that when there is damage it spreads to the damaged area and when all traces of the Psilosynine is gone the brain is healed.” A quick flick of her hand brought the previous image back and a tap of her console lit the brain up in different colors. “As you can see from all the orange this brain is struggling to heal the damage but it doesn’t come close to the areas suffering from physical trauma.”

A tap and her hands flared out and they were standing inside a cell that was mangled. “This neuron is missing a third of the cell membrane and is leaking cytoplasm.” A tap and zoom and they were standing beside the cell membrane and then from the side she pulls in a chemical chain. “This is the chemical composition of the cell membrane and this” pulls in another, “is the chemical composition of Psilosynine.” A twist, pull, flip and scroll and then placed side by side, “a portion of the psilosynine matches the formula for the cell membrane. Whatever the Dominion used to sever this part of the brain has blocked the natural Psilosynine from reaching these damaged parts. So if we bypass what they did and inject the Psilosynine directly into the cells…” In the 3D model she drops a molecule of the hormone inside the neuron, speeds up the simulation, and the process happens naturally sealing the cell membrane and then the cell is able to begin it’s own repair internally. “However, for humanoid species neurons are fully formed at their capacity during initial gestation. This process will not be able to replace the neurons that were harvested. That will be the next step in the process.”

The small little man just nodded several times and then pushed the button on the device encircling his head. “That works. Pretty pictures,” he said agreeably. “And with that unless there is something you would like to say to children who might see you as an inspiration, I will get out of your hair.”

GM Wombat

Alexis shook her head no, “No I am fine thank you,” her attention riveted on something in the model, “GALEN save this exact image and position of the model to the file. Bring up the lights and lower the force field for Mr Golfink.”
