Slipping back into her quarters after seeing Willow and announcing her unexpected time off, her mind was a jumble. Piece by piece her uniform came off, items tossed carelessly to be ignored until she needed them again. Soon the pulses of the sonic shower swept over her body and she all but willed it to make her feel better. It didn’t. Sliding down to the floor, Dira sat there with her knees drawn up, arms wrapped around her legs and rested her forehead on her knees.

She stayed that way for awhile until she dragged herself out of the shower stall and found something cozy to wear. A cup of jestral tea wafted through her living space as it came to rest on the coffee table. Dira’s limbs felt weak as she neared the couch and she all but collapsed on it, pulling a blanket over her. She closed her eyes but her mind was no refuge and sleep was not likely to come. A ghost from the past hovered in her mind and she no longer had the energy to push it away.

She was trying to figure out which moment it was where things began to unravel so quickly. But Dira couldn’t put her finger on it. Instead, exhausted, she just closed her eyes and attempted to mediate, and maybe (if she was lucky) fall asleep.

Kane had got Bonner settled and was trying to get the thought that something was wrong out of his head. When he finally couldn’t anymore, he flopped down on the coucha nd thought about the past two days. And one thought kept coming to the surface…

The XO.

She hadn’t done anything to Kane or Bonner, but she was obviously not happy with the way things had gone. That, coupled with her telling the Captain and them having to explain… again… made Kane frustrated. But why, he kept asking himself. Then suddenly, a thought occurred to him. He quickly got dressed and he left the room.

Less than two minutes later, there was chime on the XO’s door.

Kane, R&D

For a good minute there was no answer, no response of any kind, though Dira was notably in her quarters. her commbadge said so.

Lying on the sofa, Dira knew that if she didn’t at least answer, whomever it was would chime again. And if she didn’t answer still, well, they would get worried and probably call someone to open the door only for her to tell them all to go to hell.

Her moved like molasses (detestable stuff in her opinion), and finally the door opened to reveal the XO. Or rather Dira. She wasn’t in uniform by a long shot. Loose stretchy bottoms in purple and a large finely knit shawl wrapped around her shoulders spoke of a woman who sought comfort. Her usually tidy mass of black curls were flattened on side. Her dark eyes gazed at Kane, red-rimmed, exhausted.

She sighed. “What now?”

Kane’s head cocked to the side slightly, his mane of wild hair falling further across his face. For a moment, he didn’t say anything; he just… looked at her. Finally, he simply raised his head. “Now?” he said and brushed past her and into the room. “I dunno. But for some reason the phrase ‘Physician heal thyself’ keeps repeating in my head, and I’m fine, and you’re the talking-type doctor. So…” and he flopped down in a chair and gestured at the couch…

“Talk.”

Her gaze swept away, glancing off objects, anywhere but looking at this man imposing himself upon her space at this particular time. She was a woman who liked comfort, who revelled in the simple luxuries she could grant herself in her life. Soft blankets, beautiful scents, warm candlelight, calming music, delicious but simple foods. Evidence of it permeated her quarters and it was clear that even though she had come aboard that first day like most of the crew, she’d made the effort to make her quarters a place of refuge.

A large soft rug spread out under the sitting area and she’d managed to affix sheer cotton drapes around her windows, despite not needing to block the light (or the view). There was shelves of books, unlit candles, and trinkets from her travels. And beside the standard desk setup offered her was an old wooden trunk, closed and possibly locked. A fake potted shrub sat in another corner and she had a large crystal vase filled with flowers and greenery in a riot of colours. But the simple beauty of the place was marred (perhaps) but reality.

She was messy. Boots had been kicked off randomly in the middle of her floor. A robe was draped over a dining chair. Random socks were bunched, just visible from his view under the sofa he wanted her to occupy. Empty coffee cups sat on side tables and the coffee table. An empty plate, but not something that would spoil if left out for anytime. Just dry left crumbs from something earlier.

Folding her arms across her chest, Dira’s eyes darted between him and the couch and settled back on him again. She watched as the uniform jacket that was carelessly tossed over the back of the overstuffed chair he’d just taken possession over was pulled down with him as he sat, likely on top of the t-shirt she’d been wearing the other day. “I know it’s a hilarious concept to people, but just because that was my career, doesn’t mean I want to talk to every person I come across about every deep and personal thing.”
