“Hey Bonner. Let’s go already.” he said loudly across the lab.Kane, R&D
She looked up at him, nodded, and grabbed the only PaDD now sitting on her work station. She walked towards him and passed him the PaDD as they walked out the door. It was the logs for ‘Eden’s Apple’ with a note, ‘Finished except for the chemical analysis of the fruit.’
Bonner, med research“That’s my girl…” Kane said and grinned slightly. “We have four hours till fabrication is done. However will we kill that much time, I wonder?” and he glanced at the door and said “Let’s go.”
Kane, R&D
She walked down the corridor towards the lift with him. Warmth spread quickly through her, his girl. There was safety in those words, and she didn’t want to think on it too much. Not right then. Foregoing him there was security from heartache of her previous attempts at dating, in the little things he did to keep the dark away. And safety from…her mind ran through all the myriad of nick names Solomon had come up with and it taking some of the weight away…safety from this situation. She trusted Solomon, she couldn’t play the game but he could. “3 hours till I have to pick Frigga up, 5 hours till the chemical tests are done. And then two or three more till the lab is empty so I can work on the pneumolysin.”
She blushed, she knew exactly how he was thinking about spending that time, but she was starting to feel comfortable enough to tease him, a little. “I paid up on our second dinner and you haven’t taught me that card trick yet. AND it’s been over a week since you said you’d teach me Mandarin. You said I’d disappoint you if I took a week to learn, but I’m blaming you since you are a slow teacher.”
Bonner, med researchAs they stepped onto the empty lift and the doors closed, Kane dropped a hand onto her butt and squeezed. “Oh, I think there are pluses to being slow and methodical. I’ll have to show you when we get back.” and the doors opened onto their deck and Kane removed his hand. “So let’s see… okay, try this.” He spoke slowly and with attention to diction and tone. “我是你的,你是我的.” (I am yours and you are mine) “Try that. Go slow.” and he put his hand on the small of her back and steered her gently towards their room.

She was not expecting that, at all. She jumped slightly, half turned and half attempted to bat his hand away. She looked up at him, mouth opening and then closing. The blush was quick in coming this time, instead of delayed. The doors opened and she stepped off the lift, and despite her bashfulness she was content to stay with him. She listened carefully. She recognized the word for ‘I’ and ‘you’ but not the others. “”我…是…你…的,你…是…我…的.” There was a pause in the middle as his hand rested on the small of her back. She listened to herself as she repeated it, she wasn’t happy with the word after I and you, and she repeated it again, “我…是…你…的,你…是…我…的.” Her smiled as the conjugation of the pronouns to possessives clicked in her head. “I like that one.”

As they walked, Kane said “Oh, I made you something.” He reached in his pocket and pulled out a square piece of flat, flexible, translucent material about two inches on each side. He held it in frontof him and said “Clear, thin, can slide in your pocket, your shirt sleeve, underwear… wherever you want it. Made so its thin and pliable enough it should stay unnoticed even in a pat down.” He handed it to her and said “Wad it up and squeeze hard.”
As she did, light erupted from it, very bright even in the well-lit passageway. They entered Kane’s room and he said “Check it out.” and he shut off the lights.
Alexis grinned, he made her something? She was more than a little bit curious. She looked at it, curious, wondering why anyone would pat her down. And then the light erupted from it and she knew. He made it for her because he promised to keep her safe in the darkness and thin enough to hide so that McS&+$-gibbon couldn’t trap her in the dark anymore.
She backed up hard against him as the lights went out, and a fine tremor and a sucked in breath went through her. But as her eyes adjusted there was no panic.
The room was filled with a blueish-white light. While not full brightness, it illuminated the room clearly. “To shut it off, let it go flat again.”
Kane, R&D
It wasn’t as bright as she was comfortable with, but it was bright enough she would be okay for awhile. She looked around, able to see everything in the room. She glanced down at the wadded up light, and nodded at his instructions. She couldn’t quite bring herself to let it turn off with the other lights off. She had no doubt Solomon would turn the lights back on before hers went out, but sickening anticipatory phobic fear kept her grip tight on the light. She didn’t know what to say or do. He did this for her. It was incredible and…and…and she had no words. Back pressed against him, she reached with her free hand, lacing her fingers with his. She looked back at him, the light clearly illuminating his face. “I don’t know what to say. ‘Thank you’ is so inadequate for this.”

Kane smiled. “Oh, and the harder you squeeze, the brighter it goes. Try it. I did that so you could keep your fist closed. Figured if you need to use it, adrenaline will give you enough strength to really light up anywhere.”
Kane, R&D
Alexis squeezed her hand around the material. The light increasing chasing more of the shadows out of the room. She stood there watching the light change as she squeezed or relaxed her hand, totally awestruck and overwhelmed.
Bonner
Kane turned on the lights, and looked at her. “So… now you have something that will keep you out of the dark anywhere you go. Keep it somewhere close to your skin. It recharges with your body heat. I hope you like it.” and he smiled and went to the replicator to get them something to drink.
