“Alexis, I told your father you were fine. Hannah called and was really worried because no one had heard from you. I told them both if something had happened we would have heard from Star Fleet. They forget how wrapped up in your work you get. ANTHONY! Alexis is on the comm, get in here.”

Alexis hated lying to her mother. Something was very very wrong, or could be, but she had Solomon and that meant everything was fine. How strange was that. An older man, salt and pepper hair, the figure of a man who used to keep in shape, but was now enjoying a less structured life. “Alexis! We’ve been worried. Your work isn’t that important that you can’t call us.”

“Hi Daddy. I’m sorry I didn’t mean for you to worry. I’ve been settling into the new ship and my new position, that’s all.”

“Are you sure you want to go into research? You’ve always loved being a doctor. I don’t understand why you changed departments, sweetie.” Her father had been beside her through those pre and early teen years as she prepped for med school and scoured the academy library and sat in his office to study while he taught and worked.

“It keeps my mind busy. The research is good for me. There is no down time at work now, I can work on several things at once and I’m still a doctor, now I just don’t offend my patients with my horrible bedside manner.” That reminded her of Solomon and him telling her about his own horrible bedside manner, but he wasn’t with her. “Hey mom, could you send me the recipe for those new sesame seed buns you told me about? I want to try them.”

Her mother shrugged, “Sure, you going to practice some chemistry?” Alexis shook her head, “No just going to cook.” Anthony and Alisson looked at each other. Alexis didn’t ‘just’ cook. Alexis took a very deep breath. They didn’t know about him she’d never told them. But..”Dad, do you remember you used to tell me that there are things in life that the mind never understands?”

“I remember. I told you sometimes you have to turn off your head and let your heart understand instead. Why, sweetie?”

Alexis bit her lip and reached down to pat Frigga. “I met someone. His name is Solomon Kane. He helps make my mind still. He’s brilliant. He’s the head of Research and Development.”

“What do you mean your mind goes still, Alexis?” That was her mother and she sighed, “Everything just…goes still and calm and the puzzles can wait to be solved and the world is quiet and peaceful. I…” she shrugged a shoulder gently with that look she used to get when she wanted new lab equipment for at home. “I want you to meet him. It won’t be soon, but he’s really important to me.”

Anthony grinned, “Oh you’re in your 20s Alexis and I’m not sure I’m ready for this.” He laughed, she would always be his little girl but she hadn’t lived at home for a long time. “And what about when things aren’t still and that brilliant mind of yours starts running at warp speeds?”

“He keeps up with me.”

Alisson started to speak when she suddenly looked off screen, “Oh My Word! Anthony, did you leave an experiment going?”

“You said Alexis was on the comm and I was worried something happened! Come to find out she’s discovered boys. Love you Alexis. I better go clean that up.” He dodged out of sight quickly. Allison turned back to her daughter just looking at her. “He makes you happy. I’ve never seen you smile like that. I can’t wait to meet him, when you’re ready. Okay. I love you Alexis. Don’t forget to call.”
