Ria seemed to relax a little at that question and she actually managed to fully meet Solal’s gaze as she replied with a shy smile, “Kava is a plant native to Bajor. Both the roots and fruits are edible and are used for various things. Either on their one, like kava juice, or as an ingredient in a meal or even more like a seasoning.”

It was at this point that Achilleas returned carrying three cups. “A green tea for Solal. A kava juice for Ria. And an iced tea for me.” He said as he placed each beverage in their place before he took his seat. He gave a quick grin at them both before he lifted his cup and took a sip.

“It would be good to try it sometime,” said Solal to Ria, as he took a sip of his tea. “Thanks,” he said to Achilleas. “How has it been?” The small talk questions. Solal’s parents had taught him several ‘conversation starters’ and questions to help him seem less odd, to help him, well, make conversation.

“I’m okay,” Ria replied softly and a little shyly before taking a sip of her kava juice. It wasn’t the same as fresh juice from really kava fruits, but it still brought a small smile to her face as it brought back happy memories.

Achilleas shrugged briefly. “I don’t really have anything new to report. I’ve still been putting off talking to my family. Especially my grandmother, she’s very good at sniffing out secrets.”

Solal’s parents were quite easy to hide things from. He hadn’t done it frequently, but he was half human, and he’d had a bit of a rebellious phase. Though, his phase wouldn’t be very ‘rebellious’ compared to most human teenagers. As he’d grown out of his teen years, he’d found it was easier to just tell them things and take the heat for it. Often, he did not understand why his parents were upset about the things they were upset about. “It’s usually easier not to try to keep secrets,” said he, with a small shrug. He chose not to comment on not talking to family. He was a horrible offender of that one. He hadn’t spoken to his parents in quite some time. Unless they’d heard some other way, they wouldn’t even be aware of his transfer to the Ogawa.

Achilleas smiled wryly. “It’s not that I’m keeping anything secret, about Ria or our relationship, it’s just that I can never really find the right time to call.” He looked sheepishly in Ria’s direction. “I’m proud to say that you’re my girlfriend, which I think Solal can attest to that, I guess it’s just all of the follow-up questions that they’ll have that I’m not ready for. We’ve talked about some things but I just know they’ll ask about the whole plan and I don’t have an answer for them.”

Ria felt rather uncomfortable at the mention of plans Achilleas parents would ask about. But she did her best to push that discomfort aside as she gave his hand a gentle squeeze and and said, “I know. You don’t have to explain or apologise or feel guilty or anything.” she smiled softly as she fell silent again; as always feeling more comfortable listening than doing the talking.
