At the appointed hour of 17:00, Mark Pierce made his way around the side of the bridge and to the Captain’s ready room. He took a breath and pressed the chime.

Willow stood watching the fish swim around the tank in her office, she looked at the time and smiled to herself, punctual this one. She liked it. “ come in!” She called

Mark entered and saw the Captain staring into the fishtank. “Sir. The replicator in your quarters has been repaired and the mess cleaned up. You wanted to see me?” He knew it was an abrupt shift in topic, but he couldn’t think of any tactful way to navigate the change.

Turning to regard the man the captain nodded. “Thank you.” She said and with a final glance at the goldfish walked back to her desk. “Yes I did, please sit down.” She herself sat and indicated the seat opposite her. “How did you find your first day as a department head?”

Mark sat down opposite the Captain. “A bit hectic. Two Engineers called in sick. We were shorthanded most of the day. Interestingly, I never did get a confirmation from sickbay that they were legitimately ill. I enjoyed the challenge though. New staff reported in. Long day, but a rewarding one, sir.”

Frowning Willow made a note to talk to the engineering staff bout professional conduct. “ I know it must have been difficult today given the sudden on the job promotion and the lack of rank to go with it. Tell me if this were to become a permenant post for you Ensign what plans would you have in mind for the improvement of the department as a whole.”

“Well sir, you saw on my record, I came to Starfleet out of the Marines. The Engineering department is already a tight knit bunch, but there’s not a whole lot of discipline. It’s not that there can’t be familiarity while we’re in the department, but things like sickbay confirmations. It still needs to run like a Starfleet operation. That could make things far more efficient”

Willow nodded. “ Then I look forward to your department improvement plan detailing how you plan on doing just that on my desk first thing Monday morning.” She slid a small box across the table containing a pip. “Congratulations Lieutenant Pierce.” She smiled.

Mark picked up the box and pulled out the pip. He rolled it between his fingers for a second before placing it next to his other one. “Thank you sir.” He put the box down. “You’ll have a detailed report and improvement plan Monday morning. First thing.” He wasn’t much one to show emotion, but inside, he was welling up. When he had joined Starfleet, he’d thought he’d be a grease monkey forever. Never really an officer.

Willow nodded and standing held out her hand. “I look forward to it. Congratulations.”she smiled. “And please let’s keep the uhh incident from this morning between us.”
