Myqian considered him for several long moments, her ebony eyes gazing curiously. “Why are you in Starfleet, Achilleas? Why did you join, and why do you stay?” They were perhaps a simple questions and a common ones during evals and check-in, but that wasn’t what this was and she had her reasons for asking.

Commander Myqian, XO

Achilleas gazed back at Myqian unflinchingly. “Starfleet was an opportunity to leave Earth. I could’ve gone to a research institute or stayed at the Academy, but getting out into the unknown and having the opportunity to see so many unexplained phenomenon satisfies my curiosity. If you want to narrow the inquiry further and say why the Ogawa then, it was available and had a science lab. Any ship would have done really but Starfleet sent me here. I must admit that I like it here and that is as much as any reason why I’m staying though.”

CSO Petrakos

“Hmmm,” Dira said, nodding slowly. Whatever else she thought, she kept to herself. There was a time and place for everything and right now her other input wasn’t needed. “I’d simply suggest then that as you interact with your staff, any and all of them, that you figure out their why, even if it’s different than the one they might tell you. When you understand that, it makes guiding them easier.”

“It’s a difficult thing to figure out a person’s motivations if it differs from what they say.” Achilleas pointed out. “I’m not a skilled observer of people or anything, I’ve been told on numerous occasions that I can be a bit oblivious. With the hustle and bustle of work activities I haven’t had a chance to one-on-one with anyone beyond their initial check-in. Everyone mostly self starts on what they need to do.”

CSO Petrakos

Myqian was thoughtful for a moment. “Then maybe you need to start there. You said the key word ‘skilled’, and like all skills you don’t get good at it without practice. So maybe you need to practice getting to know your team better, and as you do the rest will come more easily.” This was yet another one of those places where her professional training came in handy and she suspected it just might be something she fell on more than she realizes she would. Whether it worked in her favour or not, well, that remained to be seen.

Achilleas furrowed his eyebrows in thought. “A skill is also something that you need a basis to start on. Where would I start in learning whether someone says one thing but really means another?”

CSO Petrakos

Dira chuckled and shook her head. “No, I said practice getting to know your staff. Practice observing more, learning about them, getting to know who they are. Believe it or not, they’ll often give you all the information you’re looking for and the rest will come with time. You say things are busy, and I know they are. But you make time for the things that are important .”
