Dark eyes affixed on Alexis, Dira did yet another thing that was unusual for her: she took something without question. She had a medical degree- she knew how to inject a hypo properly. Med school 101. The hiss was strangely reassuring as if it might clear away the rest of the emotional distress she had been feeling. Time to find some boxes to put them in until they could be processed later. She didn’t need to say anything to Alexis, but the acceptance of the hypo was probably enough.
Alexis took the hypo. “I have no idea what you had or how much, but based on the dilation of your eyes, the unsteadiness of your stance when you started to stand it will take a maximum of 3 minutes. But see Cmdr, I told you what it was and what it would do and I left you with the decision of whether you wanted to use it or not. I didn’t take your freedom to choose.” Alexis was making a point in her own way.
When she finally felt clear-headed enough to speak, Myqian exhaled slowly. “I did tell him I went to see you. What I hadn’t told him yet was that you walked out on me when you got angry. Whether you’re ready to admit it or not Alexis, you’re feeling things and I had a hunch that Lieutenant Kane would need to be ready for that. And the part of the conversation you missed was the part where I just explained that Intelligence was involved in the death of my fiancee and that I’ve had, may I add pretty recent, experience with someone obsessed with me to the point where I couldn’t function. This isn’t just about you Alexis. Or Soulis. We’ve had a massive security breach on this ship plus the guarantee it’ll happen again. So I might be handling this all wrong, but we’re all doing our best to muddle our way through. I would have loved for you to have been with us for the entire conversation but you ran away. But if you want to take control of this situation, if we all want to see this end in a way other than disaster, then you can’t run away again. I couldn’t before, and you can’t now.” Okay, maybe the emotional boxes weren’t working so well today.
Commander Myqian, XO
A low laugh issued forth but was short lived. It was just too much. Lies, they all fed her lies, or maybe it was just their truth. She listened very carefully and then ordering her thoughts. “And there is the problem with Betazoids. You ‘heard’ what was said in private in the hallway and feel the need to comment. I didn’t walk away angry. I walked away annoyed. I asked you to let me work and you just wanted to keep talking. Yes I’m feeling things, a whole lot of things and I don’t want to talk to you about them. I have a counselor. You thought Lt Kane would need to be ready for my anger. Really? This man right here? You thought he should be warned that little ol’ me was mad and he couldn’t deal with it? Or he needed to be warned that I was spiraling so he could, what? Help me? You were concerned for my mental health and someone needed to be warned but you let me wander the ship alone? And it wasn’t the first thing you said to him? I am sorry about your fiance, I truly am. Anyone lucky enough to find someone to love them doesn’t deserve to lose them. I am sorry that person disrupted your life, but I have no stopped functioning, yet. I function differently. You’re very very wrong. This IS about Soulis. He created a security breach on your ship, do what you need to. But I promise you, if I leave he leaves too, there is nothing else on this ship he wants because I take it all with me. I didn’t run away, I walked away, because I had work to do. We have combadges it wasn’t that hard to contact me to come here. But see I can’t walk away, I can’t ‘hide’. I won’t allow others to be hurt by him. Because if he can’t get me to do the work for him he’ll find the next smartest person, and the next and the next. I took an oath to save lives, and maybe this isn’t an operating room, but he is a vicious deadly virus that needs eradication before he turns into a plague. I cannot begin to understand how your experience shaped you, but I’m not you. I don’t know how this will shape me. But one thing I have learned is I can not be judged by others’ standards.”
This frustration wasn’t Alexis, she was usually quiet, simply because no one ever really listened to what she had to say, she was above them or uninteresting. Only Solomon really listened to her. But she had something to say about all this and she said it. She took a deep breath and she turned to Kane. “See while the two of you were busy talking about feelings and what I should or should not be feeling and how you two feel about it, I did something. You may be very angry at me for this, but honestly I don’t care. You’re about to get a call, making you the case agent for this whole ‘problem.’
Lt BonnerOh for… was she serious? But of course Dira knew she was. Just great.
Kane blinked once, paused, then shrugged. “Actually… I told her-” and he jerked his head towards the XO, “- that I thought he should be killed. Because he isn’t after your work, Alexis… he wants you. He wants your brain under his control, his beck and call. It has nothing to do with your research. It has everything to do with how you think. Thats it. Now she-” and another head jerk, “- has decided that we do this above board. Try and let the system handle it.” Kane shrugged. “So… thats where we are at. Now that we are all on the same page, maybe you girls can stop measuring whose is bigger and we can get down to working out an actual plan?” and he flopped down in a chair.

Nothing Dira had done was about showmanship or proving she was the boss of anyone. Alexis clearly didn’t get her and Dira clearly was misunderstanding Alexis. Fine. It happened. But the rest… the rest. Pulling her lips inwards, she closed her eyes to still everything. What she needed most right now was out of the question and she didn’t have the luxury of claiming she was compromised and recusing herself. There was a moment where she went to say something, but nope, nothing. So Dira stood there, arms folded across her chest, feeling every single damn bit of tension in the room. They didn’t understand. Neither had had a proper conversation with her where she could disclose it and right now wasn’t the time either. But she knew the crux of the situation was the helplessness that came from knowing you could prevent something bad from happening and having your ability to do so taken away. At the end of the day the pips on her collar meant nothing. Not really. They were a symbol adn right now she was trying to figure out how it even mattered right now and couldn’t come up with a damn reason.

Kane snapped his fingers. “Ok ok ok ok ok ok… everyone sit. And be quiet and let me work this through a minute.” He looked at Alexis and indicated a chair and then at the XO. “My house, my rules. Have a seat.”
Kane started to pace, pinching hi bottom lip between his thumb and forefinger over and over. His scowl was magnitudes deeper than normal, and he growled in his throat every now and then.
Then he stopped moving.
He stood motionless for a moment or two and then turned and sat down between the two women. “Ok… what about this? We know he wants your brain. Why is still up in the air, but I’m guessing its because he wants to use you to do his work. Or at least make his s^%$ work. And he’s gonna use all those resources to make that happen, right? So…”
“We take away his toybox. Make him useless to Intel so they just toss him away.” and he looked at Dira. “It isn’t killing him, but it is killing his access. And I’m not thinking public shaming or some such crap. He’d just go private sector. No… I’m thinking something decidedly more permanent.”
He looked at Alexis and said “You know of any biological or synthetic agent that permanently screws up a human brain? Particularly cognition?” and he then looked at Dira. “Make him an idiot… neurologically. He’d be useless, thrown out with the trash. And he’d be unable to work again. He’s not dead… just impotent.”
