Dira nodded slowly. “The hard part is that the organization almost encourages his sort of behaviour and by the time they realize it’s gotten out of hand, it’s too late.”

She drank a little more of the liquor she didn’t dare ask anything about and then sighed. “You know my hands are tied. If something happens to Soulis that can’t be directly explained by anything other than self-defence, you know very well that I am obliged to tell the truth as I know it,” she said, gazing at him intently, her ebony eyes holding layered meaning. “And for the time being we take all the steps we can to keep Alexis safe.”

Kane looked at her, his expression unchanging, but he said “Oh, absolutely. We take what steps we can to make sure she is safe. Anything proactively done to Soulis blows back on the ship and thats a hell no one wants. Hopefully he’s smart enough to just go away… but I doubt it. So… we do it your way. Let the system handle it. I won’t do anything to Soulis… except in self-defense, of course.”

“I’m glad we’re in agreement,” Dira said, actually rather sincerely too. She set the glass to the side and had to blink. It really was strong stuff. She’d only had, what, one measure? Then again, she rarely drank very heavily. There was a part of her though that wanted to tip the entire thing down her throat now that the emotions she had had such good control over were more loose than they should be. “What is that anyway?”
