Alexis gave up on being able to work at the moment and turned to Myqian. “I don’t know what else you’d like me to tell you, Cmdr.” She sighed. Why couldn’t people let her work? “I understand you are offering to…to let me confide in you. I suppose the correct response is to give you a ‘tell all’? I met Ever and Soulis when I was stationed on the Hathaway. Skipping over the long list of details, Soulis asked me to marry him. I believed him, he was joking. I found Ever in our bed, and I was told quite thoroughly how inadequate I was and how much enjoyment they got out of my behavior. Can I go back to work now?”

Dira took a long and slow deep breath. If ever there were situations that would invoke her ire, the ones where people casually used and abused others would do it. And yet, it would be irresponsible as a psychiatrist and a leader to just discount the other sides of stories, the background details of people. She had no doubt that the situation was as Alexis laid it out, but it was almost never so simple. Still, later, there would be a guaranteed bout of emotional release that was required or else she would lose clarity. And Alexis, and the ship, needed her on her game.

“There was no right answer here. Consider it an indefinite offer- anytime, anywhere. Lieutenant Kane was very adamant about keeping this very quiet and I don’t disagree. We must tread very carefully here because Soulis has breached the security of the Ogawa, and since we’re all very certain he will do it again, we need to take steps to ensure it doesn’t happen in the first place, ideally, but also have plans in place if it does.” She kept it less concrete a possibility, despite them both knowing otherwise, because hope was important here. Stranger things had happened. “Alexis, the one piece of all of this that I’m missing that I do need you to tell me is how you want this to go. What do you want to see happen going forward? That matters to me greatly,” she said with all the sincerity she had and it etched itself into her eyes.

“How I want it to go? Go how Cmdr? And what? It doesn’t matter how quiet you and Lt Kane want to be. I don’t understand how to play his games. But I do understand he watches me. He made sure I did. He told me he was happy to see I still looked so good, so young, so ‘pretty’. That he’d seen me around the station. But see that was the first time I had been on the promenade. I told him so and he laughed at me. Told me details about my schedule, what I got from the replicator, what nights I couldn’t sleep trying to solve a problem.” Or the fact after 3 years he knew enough to have Ever in place before she ever arrived on the station. Oh there were other things, other details that scared her. Intimate details that she he told her he found her reaction quite funny.

The slow piecing together of the situation had now become a more full picture. Not the whole one, but enough of one to know the most important variables. And though it was beneficial to Alexis (though she might not realize it) that Dira was well acquainted with similar scenarios, Dira knew that she had to be exceedingly careful with her own motions here. Clarity. It had to always come back to clarity. “I could probably toss out a diagnosis for Soulis rather easily, based on what you’ve told me, but it’s a bad practice in general. But regardless, his behaviour is entirely that of someone who care not one wit about the well-being of others.”

Alexis didn’t say it but she had the very unkind thought that if Myqian was as good as she claimed how hadn’t she figured that out 10 minutes ago? Of course the man didn’t care about anyone but himself. He and Ever were perfect for each other. They only cared about themselves and how others served their own purposes, and add into that Ever’s telepathic manipulation of people, and they were real life monsters.

Frigga nipped her hand softly drawing her attention to the present. She pet her several times before picking her PaDD back up. “I want to be left alone to do my work.” She picked up right where she had paused, reassessing each piece of research and cross referencing against her main console.

Myqian nodded slowly, taking a moment to give Frigga a smile. She could tell the dog was concerned about Alexis. Me too, she thought towards the animal. She shifted her attention back to Alexis. “And I want you to have the space and freedom to do just that. So that’s our goal. In the meantime though, things may continue to be uncomfortable until we get a handle on this situation. People like Soulis tend to act out more if they feel they aren’t getting the reaction they want or feel they deserve. But I don’t intend to let his behaviour continue. And we don’t have to play his game. It might be time to create one of our own. Create our own rules. But it means regardless of how we decide to proceed, I do have to bring Captain Taylor into the mix. And most likely Lieutenant Haven. But they don’t have to know the personal details- those stay between us. Does that sound doable?”

There was a strange sound coming from Frigga. Anyone who had learned to work with her would recognize it as a warning, the patient had been pushed too far. She lifted onto her hind legs attempting to add her weight to Alexis’ lap. A bag appeared out of a drawer and stacks of PaDDs were slipped inside. “Down Frigga!” She turned off her console and turned to look at Myqian. “My life is uncomfortable, that isn’t going to be any different. I DO NOT WANT TO PLAY GAMES! But like I said, I’m a pawn. You tell whoever you want, it’s not my choice.” She picked up the bag, yanked the chip out from under the table and the fields disappeared. “It’s my day off, I don’t have to be in the lab.” And then Lt. Alexis Bonner, brilliant doctor and scientist, totally devoted to Star Fleet and her work, walked out on her XO.
