“Escape me?!?! By the gods lady, are you that dense! Escape me? Why the f$#! do you think I’m here? Why I told you in the first place?! You know as well as I do I could have gone all Gallahad and tried to end this myself. But I f$#@ing didn’t, now did I? No. I came to you because I was trying to be a team player or some s%$#. And I didnt tell her I was coming, either. Because I knew that some perspective would be needed. And yeah, despite your condescension and arrogance, I am quite aware that objectivity may be a bit compromised here…” and he came back in and bent over and put his fists on the desk and glared at the XO. “Because a group of people I know personally to have zero remorse and even less morals has someone in their midst fixated on a member of your crew and is using their resources to try and manipulate and potentially harm them. And they have breached the security and integrity of a brand new, top of the line star ship while there is press and a metric s%$# ton of eyes on it. So yeah… go ahead and make all the assignments you want. Change up duty rotations and put more Security out in the passageways. See how long it takes the conspiracy theorists and foreign intelligence agencies to spot that little up tick. And then you and the Skipper can explain it all to the Admiralty Board. I’m sure you’ll both be very happy in your next assignments… probably doing rectal swabs on a Andorian shingles colony.”

It was like the more outwardly angry he got, the calmer Dira got. “You’re still not hearing me,” she said quietly with a slight shrug. “And I think you don’t want to. You want to be angry, and you are angry at them. But they aren’t here, so you’re taking it out on me. I’m a big girl though, you don’t scare me,” she said, her tone now holding a tiny bit of an edge. She hadn’t retreated as he aggressively encroached on her space. Not even a twitch. Was it bravado? Was she frozen in place by the intense affect of his emotions on her sensitive telepathic mind? Dira wasn’t about to let that be known. “I’d like to share something with you that might reframe all of this better, so that we can help Alexis, but you need to sit your a$$ down and shut your mouth for two seconds and listen to something more than you want to hear.”
Commander Myqian, XO
Kane slowly stood up, but simply crossed his arms on his chest and just shook his head. “You’re an idiot if you think this is just about Alexis… but go ahead. I’m always up for a laugh.”

A flicker of pain slipped through the mask, lasting an ever so brief moment before it was tucked away safely. Dira stared at him, the moments expanding outwards. Finally, she shook her head. “No, forget it” she said flatly. “By all means, do leave now.” And much like before, it was not a request.

“Fine.” and he turned and went to the door, stopping right before it would have opened. He turned and looked at her. “You know… you guys are good, I’ll give you that. Your delivery, your words… they almost convinced me you were different. That this -” and he gestured around himself at the ship as a whole, “- was different. But you’re just like the rest. And this is just a prettier jail. You could give two s%$#s about anybody, as long as you have it your way. Guess that’s the only constant in all the Universes, huh?” and he turned and walked out.

Coldness swept over her body as the door closed behind him. Dira hadn’t tried to stop him for one simple reason: she was too hurt and angry. Understanding that kind of anger and simply feeling it off others were two different things. Most would assume Dira only knew the latter, when the truth was she knew both sides. And the thing about being a trained therapist is that you learned how to channel those emotions and later work through them. It didn’t always work. She knew that all too well.
Arms still on her desk, they shifted so her hands clasped tightly, her knuckles a paler brown. He didn’t know it, naturally. It was hard to see and she had too good a mask to entirely let someone see it. But the assumption that what she had been about to say was not worth listening to, worth a ‘laugh’ as he had put it, had summoned an anger not so dissimilar to his. And it was because she respected him too much as a fellow officer, and had too much self-respect that she managed to not dump it all back on him.
She needed to sit and calm down. Right now she needed to be away from others. But the truth was deeper than that. At the core of it all was the fact that she couldn’t tell anyone. Two incidents: one claimed the woman she loved, and the second nearly destroyed her in the worse kind if way. The latter only one person on this ship knew about, had even an inkling about, but still did not know the whole of it. There was no one she could tell. Well, that wasn’t entirely true, but she wasn’t there yet and it didn’t seem necessary right now. The first though? She was never allowed to speak of it. People had made sure of it.
Having secrets could be terribly lonely.
