Myqian laughed aloud, feeling it throughout her body. It was a well-timed and necessary relief of tension, but she didn’t explain or apologize for her laugh before responding to him. “Well there is a whole lot there I can and probably will respond to but it’s clear to me that we’re actually thinking similar things, but coming at them from different angles.”

She sat forward again. “I never once said I was pulling her from duty, or doing anything formally. I know it might be easier to believe that I don’t understand Soulis and people like him, but I actually do. No, I understand him very well indeed and if there is something I cannot abide, Lieutenant, it’s a bully. And the way this man came and left our ship and terrorized a woman while he was here? Well, that makes me want to sucker-punch someone, and I think you know me just well enough to know that I’m not someone easily inspired to violence.”

Kane put his hands behind his head and grinned.

“Well… nobody’s perfect.”

Kane, R&D

Dira snorted and then sighed. “There are ways we can very discreetly provide the help Alexis needs and”-she reached across her desk and picked up a PADD-“you’d be amazing what sort of communications you can do passing about these simple things. But in acknowledging that we’re going to have to be very careful about how we proceed, your request to keep it hush-hush the way you want it, is still denied. I will still be telling Captain Taylor as soon as is feasible and I will also speak to Lieutenant Haven. Perhaps a slight increase in plain-clothed patrols to mimic off-duty crew could be useful. The point is, Lieutenant, we can figure this out together, for Alexis’ sake, but it is going to require you to trust me farther than you might be comfortable with.”

Kane stared at her for a minute, his eyes hard and predatory.

“I don’t have to trust you. And to be frank, telling me you are going to do the exact opposite of what I’m asking is a s!@t way to earn that trust.” He shook his head and sorted derisively. “But you go ahead. Do your thing. And in a couple of months when nothing’s happened because he knows you’re looking for him and everything goes back to normal and you and the CO and Security is complacent and forgotten about what he did… and then F$#kwad D%!knose ‘pops’ back in and does something a hell of a lot worse than knock her through a glass-top table and give her a panic attack? You better remember this moment and tell her you could have stopped it but you thought you knew better.” and he stood up and looked at the XO. Kane had changed with the accident. Prior? Oh, he would have been throwing furniture. Now? Now he was just done.

“See ya around. I’ll let you know if I hear anything.” and he turned and walked to the door.

“Sit down, Lieutenant. I don’t recall you being dismissed,” Dira said flatly, her voice even. She didn’t shout but it was most definitely not a request. And even as her outward appearance was placid, her inner state was anything but. But she didn’t say anything further, waiting for him to decide how this went next.

Kane turned and locked eyes with her. It wasn’t hostile per se, but it certainly wasn’t submissive. “And I don’t recall asking. I’m not gonna sit here and waste your time and mine. You are obviously gonna do what you think is best. I don’t have to agree with it, and I sure as hell don’t have to nod my head and say Oh yeah great idea boss why didn’t I think of that?! Rank has its privaledges… so be it. But I’m not gonna sit here and debate this. I won’t get in your way… but don’t let your babysitters get in mine, either. Chalk it up to ‘professional courtesy’ or something, I don’t care. But I’m not gonna sit back and wait in case something might happen.”
