For a moment, Mariah let silence fall between them. Although she didn’t understand what she had triggered in the young scientist, she recognized something more was going on. When the silence wasn’t held by her companion, she offered quietly, “Was it something I said?” Grayson wouldn’t normally assume responsibility like that, but in this case, she wasn’t sure what she may have elicited.

Ria looked up a little startled; surprised by Mariah’s question and the woman’s apparent worry that she had done something wrong. Shaking her head quickly, Ria replied, “No, I just … I miss my family and I get homesick easily.” Dropping her gaze again, she chewed on her lower lip for a moment before adding, “Thinking of those programs … makes me happy, but also very sad.” With her eyes still fixed on the floor she waited for Mariah’s reaction and reply.

“Thank you for sharing that with me,” Mariah replied to Iyun’s bowed head. “When you share what you’re thinking and feeling, it helps me get to know you better and it helps me to understand how I might help you feel a bit more at ease. I want you to know, however, there’s nothing wrong with who you are and what you feel.”

Lifting her head just enough to peer up at Mariah, Ria smiled ever so slightly. “Okay. Thank you,” she replied softly and after a short pause asked a little hesitantly, “Which program should we pick?”
