“Ahh, yes s..” Kyren started to say, as she spun on her heels to face the human who would be her new boss. Her antenna locked on, and stiffened briefly as she took the man in. “..sir.” Another ensign! Are you kidding me?It took her a moment to figure out what the hell she was going to say to this. She was sure there had to be a story behind this. Just had to be one. “Ah… yes, my orders, my orders,” she said, her tongue finally returning to operation, as she extended her padd. “Ensign Kyren, sir. From Andor. Well, not really, I mean… Andorian. Obviously I’m Andorian… I mean…” She took a deep breath, as a cross expression appeared on her face. “I’m going to try to stop being an idiot now, sir, if you don’t mind.”
Mark chuckled. “You’re fine. I know this-“ He tugged at his collar with the single pip. “probably threw you for a loop. These things take time. Everything has to be authorised from above. Now, from your orders, you are Ensign Athravia Zh’rkyren. Ordered to report to the Engineering department, USS Ogawa. Is that correct?”
“Step into my office Ensign. I remember from my check-in that etiquette is to offer something from the replicator. Anything you would like before we get down to business?” Mark was extremely uncomfortable with the unprofessional nature of the offer, but it was, as far as he knew, what was done.
-Ensign Mark Pierce, aCE
Kyren followed. It had thrown her for a loop, but not as much as the small size of the Engineering compartment itself. “Yes, sir, that is my name, but I generally go by Kyren. The full name tends to be rather a mouthful, even for us.” She glanced at the replicator briefly, but shook her head. “No, I… actually, just some water would be great. A bit too early in my day for anything else.”
Hell, hes an Ensign just like me. Stay calm, you fishmonger, he’s not going to try and make you look dumb. She took a seat slowly, her antenna swiveling a bit around the room before locking onto Pierce. “How long have you been aboard, if you don’t mind me asking?”
ooc: basing the ‘small size’ comments on the McCoy class specs - it’d been a while since I’d been here, I’d forgotten the ship was only 40ish total, and only 5 or so Engineers total. although I also notice the specs for the ship are currently in some weird archived status.
Mark replicated a water for Kyren and coffee for himself and then sat behind his desk. “A little while. Not as long as you might expect for the new CE, but I have an odd record. Coming from the Marines to Starfleet to become an Engineer. Now. Kyren. You’ve probably noticed this is a small unit. We’re fairly tight knit. You can expect to know everyone fairly well, fairly quickly. Since this is such a small department, specialties and skills matter. Do you have any specialty, special training, interests?”
-Mark Pierce
OOC: I could’ve sworn I replied to this. I must’ve hit cancel instead of submit or something. Also, for the purpose of this thread, we’ll pretend I’m still an Ensign.
“Were you enlisted then?” She nodded as she listened to Pierce’s brief history.
“Yes I was. Marine infantry. Made it up to Sergeant Major. Had a squad of my own. Chose engineering when I left because I always had a knack for fixing up broken down vehicles and such.” Mark replied.
“I was never a great expert at the theoretical aspects. I mean, I won’t be inventing any new warp field designs anytime soon. But I’m pretty good at the computer programming aspects. I was usually the one in our group who could figure out the debugging issues first.” She made a little face. “Also if you ever need any fish salted, well, I’ve got a few years experience there.” She leaned back, taking a sip of her water. “On such a small ship, I suppose, I have a bit of other versatility, I’m a good navigator and a fair pilot. But I also know I’ve still got a lot to learn. Sometimes I’m pretty surprised I graduated, much less got in, to be honest.”
“Well. With a group this small, warp field theorists aren’t my top priority. It’s people who can get in and fix anything, because even at full shift, we’re really understaffed. Piloting’s a good skill to have. Might need to haul to another ship or down to a planet. Never know. Computer programming, might need that. Something comes out of order. But you’ll get plenty of on the job, practical experience. And some of it will be… not what you came out of the academy expecting. This morning I got called out to fix a replicator that wouldn’t stop dispensing milk. You never know what’s around the next corner. What do you know about working on a medical ship?”
-Mark Pierce, CE
“Milk?” Kyren asked, before shaking her head. “Nevermind. Weird s…tuff happens in space. I really don’t know much honestly about a medical ship, as opposed to any other kind of ship.” She started to look a little nervous. “W..well, I mean I took the mandatory first aid courses, of course, but I never really studied any medicine otherwise. But… but most of our medical equipment isn’t all that different from any other machines on a starship. Biobeds, medical tricorders and all that, they all ultimately run on the same kinds of circuits and sensors and are subject to the same types of failures and errors, right?”
-Kyren
“It’s pretty much the same. There are a few differences, but most of the malfunctions you’ll see are along the usual lines. If you want, I can have you go out with someone, if we get a call from sickbay. You can see the little differences. Two things left on the agenda, I think. First, anything you want to add about yourself? Something that your record and our conversation so far wouldn’t say? Second, do you have any questions for me?”
