Casela sat down next to Gen and let her hold her hand. She took in Gen’s trembling and her widened/glowing eyes and her obvious feelings of distress. She squeezed Gen’s hand and stood back up. Her voice calm and professional, “Doc if you have everything you need, for the moment, I’d like to let Gen rest. She’s starting to show signs of shock and severe stress. I’ll put her in a patient room down here. If you need even more samples, we can attend to that later.” Casela wasn’t happy about the stress Gen was under. She was child for goodness sake. No need to terrorize her. And who knew what her abnormal traits might cause to happen in a child who didn’t understand them.

The doctor packs up the equipment and pulls out a small stasis box of peanut butter cup cookies and offers it to Gen, “You were an excellent patient today, please be at ease and enjoy the treat.” As she stood she faced the counsellor, “A moment please.”

The girl blinked in surprise and took the box. She held it in her hands and after a few moment opened it and looked at the cookies.

Once away from Gen a bit, the doctor spoke in hushed tones so she wouldn’t overhear. “I have some concerns, my scans show slight deviations from human norm not unlike my own genetic mutations. I can’t say for certain what the exact causes are or what they do without more invasive testing and while you are acting as her guardian I’ll defer to your judgement on the matter. I thought you should know to be prepared for odd, not normal human behaviour.” The doctor shows the counsellor the scans that she was just talking about in case she might recognize what the deviations are.

Casela looked at the readings, “They look similar, though I’m not expert, to brain waves of some humanoids that are telepathic. Or have some psychonic ability, but not quite. There is quite a bit about Gen we don’t know, and she doesn’t either, though she wants to. It’s going to take a lot of time to figure it out, I’m afraid. Her memories are not all intact either.” Casela glanced over at Gen, eating the cookies. Her normally carved from stone face softening just a bit. “I’ll keep an eye on her and we’ll do regular medical check ups?”

The Doctor laughs, “That much is expected, she still has five years of immunizations to catch up on. None of which I have on this ship at this time, you’ll have to wait till we get back to the starbase so I can get the missing supplies.” Doctor Kastil was still bitter about the ship leaving so horribly unprepared and the commander thought it was just ‘some problems to fix along the way’. There were entire backup replacement systems that didn’t make it on the ship because it left in such a hurry. It wouldn’t surprise the doctor if it turned out the torpedo armament was shorted because they didn’t have time to load all the weapons. With a sigh and a shake of her head, the Doctor finishes putting away all the tools on the cart. “I’ve got everything I need for now. Be sure to bring Gen to Sickbay at least once a month for checkups until we are certain she’ll be alright with quarterly checkups like the rest of the crew.”

Casela nodded. “There is a lot missing on this ship that should have been here. I’m missing all the psychological profiles of the entire crew and I’m having to make them from scratch. The ‘sparkies’ are everywhere and they have no idea what they are getting into, and whole decks are ripped apart and not ready for use. The brass didn’t give this a lot of thought.” Casela says quietly. “I’ll be sure to bring her in, Doc. And I’d like to bring her in after we pick up whatever it is we are going after. I want to make sure it’s isn’t bothering her.”
