Jessie Gets Her Head Checked

Pulling her bright red coveralls out of her backside, again, Jessie moved slowly down the corridor to the counsellor’s office. The hem of the coveralls stopped about four inches too short and no matter how many times she had asked the replicator to produce a longer pair, the result was never a good fit. Either the leg length was too short, too long or it was too tight for zipping properly. Making a mental note, she planned on asking the CSO if she could wear something more similar to BVDs. Or were they called BTUs? She couldn’t remember. Turning her ball cap so the brim faced forward and not backwards, Jessie untangled her long jet black cane rolls before pressing the chime with her long brown forefinger.

Crewman Jessie Polizzi, Science

Casela had been else where when Jessie walked up. She heard the chime and came jogging down the corridor from another room and into the large central area of the counseling deck. “Ah, you must be Jessie Polizzi? I saw your name and face on the crew manifest. I”m Casela Synthi-er, Head counselor. Come on in.”

Jessie jerked her back and growled lowly. She had not expected or heard the counsellor approach. Given the part Klingon had exceptional hearing, this had caught her off guard and kicked her ‘fight or flight’ response. Pink flushed to her cheeks, expressing embarrassment that the woman had been able to startle her to the point of emanating a verbal instinctive reaction. “Yes. Of course that is my name. It’s a pleasure to meet you, Dr. Synthi-er”, Jessie said with a slight bow before following the counsellor.

Although Casela had not mean to startle the crewman, she had. Casela had that affect on people some times. She figured it would hurt the half Klingon’s pride if she mentioned it so she simply waited for Jessie to enter her office.

In her office there were no pictures. Her educational credentials went up on the wall. She may lack rank, but not the training, and not the experience. There was a small shelf next to her desk, that was away from prying fingers. Several small items went onto that shelf that had significant meaning to her, but the wise would never ask her about them. There was a choice of chairs or couches. “Would you like something to drink?” Casela asks as she steps into the office.

Looking around the room, Jessie looked for the most suitable and comfortable seating for her lanky frame. And then her eyes rested on the trinkets next to the counsellor’s desk. “No thanks. I am on duty. Maybe blood wine later if you want to accompany me to the ship’s lounge. What are those things?” Jessie said as she pointed to the shelf and sat on the largest couch at the same time. Sitting with her knees as far apart as possible, she rested her hands on the tops of her things and sat rigidly upright.

Casela nodded, “We could certainly do that. Would you like something more appropriate for being on duty?” Casela took a seat across from Jessie. She made a note to get something in her office for those officers who were taller. She glanced at the trinkets and back at Jessie. Well she couldn’t be rude and expect to finish this crew eval and since Polizzi was nice enough to show up on her own, “Reminders,” was all she said.

“Hmm,” Jessie responded glancing at the objects on the shelf. Betazoid’s were known for being all about their sensitive feelings and talking about them. Counsellor seemed a perfect fit. The science crewman wasn’t really interested and had only been attempting small talk. As such, she did not ask any more questions. “Could I have.....peach iced tea. No sugar. Please.”

Casela ordered the drink and handed it to Polizzi.

And in normal fashion she got right to the point. “Tell me crewman, how are you liking Leviathan? It is certainly an interesting mission they have sent us on.”

Lt. Synthi-er, CNS

“It’s ok. So far. I don’t know if the mission is or is not. Mine is to clean cages and feed rodents. Not so bad though. Plenty of fresh gagh. When my degree is finished, I can do more things,” Jessie said starring straight at the counsellor unblinking. Oddly, even though the woman was not Klingon, she had a attractive quality about her. Jessie sniffed the air. Plus she smelled nice. Still, not a Klingon, so not her type. “How do you like it? Have you found a mate yet?”

Polizzi, Science

Casela had seen that particular ‘sniff’ by Klingon’s before and she had learned the best thing to do was ignore it. Acknowledgement of any type did’t end well. And Polizzi was NOT her type. And poor girl would end up too broken and be like an old man that whimpers with a weather change. “Do you have enough time for your studies? Has your schedule been adjusted to allow for study time? If not we can fix that. Star Fleet is a strong supporter for educational ambitions and just becasue we are away from a star base does not mean your studies are ignored.”

“Haven’t talked to my supervisor yet. Need to do that, but it’s usually not a problem. I can keep up with my studies and still get the cages cleaned. Whatever else needs doing,” Jessie said taking the glass of tea feeling the condensation through the glass as it slid into her massive hand. Swirling the liquid around counter-clock wise twice, she lifted the brim to her lips and swallowed the light colored tea quickly in three gulps. Jessie placed the glass onto the table with a heavy thud, nearly breaking the glass.  Placing her hands palm down on her knees, she leaned forward towards the counselor, she winked and said, “and mating.”

“You like to keep busy then? Well there are lots of opportunities for you to work on your studies here. Most of the crew here have expertise in several areas. I’m sure they would be happy to share.” Again Casela ignored Jessie’s comment about intimate relationships. Either she was trying to set Casela off balance, or Jessie was hyper aware of her own needs. She made a comment in her notes to mention this to Doc Fey. There might be a medication to help Jessie with her urges.

“Do you enjoy the work you do now? Does it help with your studies or are you working towards a different area of study?” Casela ignored the other question. It was too absurd to think she was looking for a ‘mate.’ Though maybe she should sic this crewmen on Liehew on the RTF team.

Lt. Synthi-er, CNS

Jessie pushed one of the cane rows that had fallen forward back behind her shoulder. Settling back onto the couch, she crossed an ankle across her knee. Was the woman seriously asking her if she enjoyed cleaning out faeces? “Not really that exciting for a Klingon. Hoping to get some weapons training and get in on some action hunting one of these creatures. Just finished my master’s in genetics with ecology and evolution. Working on a doctoral next. Might be an officer like you one day. Yeah, though. I think working with the RTF can help me with my biology degree. Get to dissect some stuff. What about you Doc? You like getting all sweaty and dirty. Nothing like chasing a tail through the a dense jungle to get the blood flowing.”

Jessie Polizzi, Science

“Well no, cleaning cages isn’t exciting for anyone I would imagine. I was just wondering if your studies included exo-zoology. But you’ve answered that question. You should talk to Dr. Kastil. She’s brilliant and I’m sure would love to converse about genetics. She has quite the team in the medical bay. What will your doctoral be on?” She glanced at Jessie’s file, “I didn’t realize you were on RTF. I thought I read here in your file that you were ARU? Well if you are on the RTF team then I’m sure M. Cpt. Manhattan will have plenty of work for you to do.” Keeping her face calm she made a decision. She was having Doc Fey put this poor girl on hormone suppression therapy. If she was Vulcan, Casela would swear she was in the middle of Pon Far.

“Last question for you, based on your position on this ship, what challenge do you think will stop you from achieving your goal of getting your doctorate and becoming and officer?”
