Posted by… suppressed (3) by the Post Ghost! 👻“Look at that, now!” the Captain exclaimed, running over and, for several moments, simply walking in circles around the cake so that he could inspect it from all angles. “Why, it looks almost too good to eat!” Then with a wink to the Doctor, he added, “Almost.”
“Crew,” he then called out into the room. “Our wonderful ship’s doctor, Lieutenant Kastil, has provided us with this delicious looking cake! I would like you all to join hands now as a sign of appreciation for her, and her sister’s hard work.”
Once the applause, rambunctious from Cobb himself, more hesitant and restrained from other corners of the room, had subsided, Zachariah lifted the knife and then moved to stand protectively behind the sponge masterpiece.
“Of course, as your Captain I would never ask any of you to do that which I myself would not. So, with that being said, I think it only fitting that I sample the first slice. In my duty as your commanding officer, of course.”Then, carving out a reasonably large piece for himself from the upper pole of the sphere, Cobb retreated to the bar where he could enjoy the sweet confectionery in peace.
Casela walked back by Zachariah and paused to ask, “Is it as good as it smells? Because it smells like culinary perfection.” She looked around and studied the room for a moment. As she spoke she quickly programmed the computer from the console near the bar. “Perhaps some music? It will get the crew moving rather than standing around staring at each other.” The music began to change to something more conducive to a party.
“Ith amathing!” Cobb murmured through a mouthful of sweet, spongy, galaxy.
But at the far-left of the room, curled into a booth with his hands wrapped around a steaming mug of tea, shipyard engineer Copper turned to his companion, Clark, and muttered, “Is it just me or does it feel like the environmental controls are busted in here? I’m absolutely freezing!”
- Captain Zachariah Cobb
Casela heard Copper and Clark and feeling rather irritated at having to be at the party to begin with decided to make an example out of them. She strode over, Copper and Clark couldn’t miss her. And of course her reputation went before her. She leaned her hands against the table and for several minutes simply stared at them, one to the other, with a single brow raised. After their eyes had dilated sufficiently and they’d both gulped, Casela spoke. “Do you know what is colder? The vacuum of space. It’s plenty warm in here. Do I make myself clear?” After several nods each, Casela walked away. Of course they were talking about her now, but she was used to it. Better her than the good doctor.
Lt. Synthi-er, CNSAs the counselor approached their table, both men had ceased their conversation and stared at Synthi-er, open-mouthed. Clearly, if her reputation as a razor-sharp interpreter of the human psyche hadn’t yet reached their ears, then her reputation as a kick-ass member of the RTF team had. So they offered no defence to her onslaught and merely sat frozen and wide-eyed in their seats.
However, as soon as she walked away, Clark could be heard reprimanding the other, “See? You nearly got us in trouble then! As if it’s not difficult enough being on this ship without you going and insulting everyone because you forgot to wear a sweater!”
A few minutes later Casela walked back by the table and without a word dropped a sweater on the seat and kept going. Okay so maybe this job as CNS can be more fun than I anticipated, she thought to herself at the confusion on their faces.
“Hey,” Clark called out after the once-again retreating form of the CNS, “thanks for the sweater!” Then throwing the clothing at Copper, he added, for his friend’s ears only, “I think she might like me.”
Casela half turned and waved, and kept going.
The Doctor turned back to the Captain and asked for water herself. The drawback of the Zoot Suit was that it was very warm to wear and she was already sweating.
- Doctor Fey Kastil
His first piece of cake devoured with record speed, Cobb set down his empty plate with a mournful expression then handed Fey a glass filled with ice and a slice of lime. Indicating to the same bottles he had previously set out for Casela, he repeated, “Altairian water, Bolian tonic water or Terran mineral water. Please help yourself, Doctor. Or,” he added, nodding to the other bottles on display, “perhaps something a little stronger? We are off duty tonight, after all.”
Being the on duty officer Ryder was dressed in his unfirom as he walked in the Lounge. The lounge was usually busy but tonight it easily had twice as many people within its doors. This also included the non-enlisted who had also been extended the Captain invitation. Ryder was one of those officer who didn’t mind mingling with the work force that was behind the smooth running of the ship and wondered if it would be a good gesture to open the doors for everyone in the future. Having been greeted by others officers and crewman he finally made it to the bar where he poured himself a Saku GO, an Estonian Beer which was the ships current house drink and this particular one was non-alacholic
- Commander Ryder, XO
Casela was returning from getting cake when she saw Ryder behind the bar. Much to her frustration she caught his stare for a moment and then looked away. She had the overwhelming feeling to move to the far corner of the room, but moved toward Zachariah instead. “The crew seems to be enjoying themselves.” Casela took a bite of the cake and savored it. “Fey, your sister is a magician. I’ve never had anything better.”
“Thats because you’ve not tried anything I’ve made yet Cas- I mean Lieutenant” Ryder had followed her, not because he wanted to speak to her specifically but because he too wanted to speak to Cobb. The flip side was he did want to spend time with her, but their… working relationship was certainly one filled with large jagged pointy spikes, neither really wanting to admit what the other was thinking or feeling which meant they just settled with a weird angered tone every time they spoke filled with sarcasm.
Casela paused in her stride and glanced up at him, and of course the first thing that popped into her mind gave her far too many ideas. His hasty “lt” snapped her out of it and she shook her head slightly. The effect this man had no her was ridiculous and unacceptable. Of course he was on duty, she wasn’t. Her voice dropped so only he could hear. “Are you offering to cook for me? I never turn down a meal. Though dinner won’t be quite as....” she glances at him, almost daring him, “intense…but it should prove interesting.” But as far as everyone else was concerned they were simply getting cake. One day I’m going to stop baiting that man. But right now it’s too much fun.
Aeons had passed since Cobb last became romantically entangled with another and yet he was not quite so out of practice as to miss the telltale signs in others. Watching Ryder and Synthi-er interact from behind his second piece of cake, it was clear to the captain that a lot more was developing between the pair than merely professional friendship. Still, as long as it didn’t interfere with their abilities to do their jobs then why should he care how they chose to spend their spare time.
“Ryder, thank you for joining us,” Cobb called out from the other end of the bar where he was already working through his second piece of cake.
“My Pleasure Captain, though I can’t stay long. I’ve already broken regulation by leaving the CIC but Ensign Michaels has everything under control for short time.” He chuckled sipping the non-alcoholic beer he had just poured.
“They’ll be fine, Commander,” the captain waved away his concern. “In a couple more days we’ll have reached the nebula and by god, you’ll be longing for a party such as this one once we get there! So relax, have another drink or two and enjoy the company.” He punctuated his sentence with a noticeable glance in Casela’s direction.
However, as the captain himself lapsed back into silence and studied the two officers, he was reminded of Synthi-er’s earlier visit to his ready room. And of the bruises across her ribs. He opened his mouth in some vague attempt to verbalise his suspicions when he was suddenly interrupted by…
But it seemed that, whatever situation was developing in the corner of the room had not yet played itself out fully. And now, poor shipyard engineer Copper could be seen leaping out of his seat, his left arm cradled to his chest.
“Ah! It burns! It burns! Help me!” he yelled to anyone who would listen.
- Captain Zachariah Cobb
Lt. Synthi-er, CNS
Ryder put down his drink and left his present company to check what the commotion was, “What’s going on, Copper isn’t it?” He called out finally closing the gap to the man, Cooper a shipyard engineer was cradling his arm. “Well spit it out man.”
- Commander Ryder, XO
Casela watched Ryder move over towards Cooper. She tapped Cobb on the arm and pointed. She as sure the Cmdr had whatever it was in hand, but it was a shame if problem started at the first crew event of their voyage.
Lt. Synthi-er, CNSThe Doctor didn’t get much time to reply to the captain or the surroundings when the engineer called out for help. As quickly as she could get through the crowd, she was there with a tricorder out. The nurse that had brought the cake pulled out a full medical kit from under the cake and started heading toward the doctor to back her up. “Commander, please relax and allow Cooper to speak on his own terms. I want to be sure he’s awake but I don’t want to panic him as that may send him into shock.” The nurse opened the kit next to the doctor and turned to clear the crowd away from them so she could do her work. “Give the Doctor some room, let her work.”
- Doctor Fey Kastil
On his knees now, his arm still clutched tightly to his chest, Copper continued to moan and blow onto his arm, as if attempting to soothe a deep burn. The doctor’s tricorder, however, would register severe vasoconstriction in his lower arm and hand, almost as if he were suffering the effects of extreme frostbite. Indeed, were the doctor to visually inspect the injured arm then she would see the skin itself turning blue.
Meanwhile, at the table, it was now Clark’s turn to cry out, with a confused yell of “what the hell?”. Seconds later and Synthi-er’s sweater had fallen from the table, the ice it had become encrusted in making several loud snaps as it collided with the floor.
- Captain Zachariah Cobb
Casela watched the sweater fall and shatter, and she moved. She was next to Cobb one moment and then pulling Clark out of the booth and towards the nurse. She turned quickly making use of her “move or die” stare, “Get back, away from here.” She moved them quickly to the other side of the room. She knelt next to Fey, the nurse, Cooper, and Clark. “What do you need, Doc?” She grabbed an extra tricorder from the medkit and started scanning the table and booth.
Lt. Synthi-er, RTF
Doctor Kastil loads a hypospray with pain medication and doesn’t bother to ask permission as she injects it into Cooper. “I need a large bucket with warm water or a low-temperature heating element. We’ll cause irreparable damage if we reheat the arm too quickly, but we do need to return it to normal temperature. Someone move the cake, we’ll need the cart.”
- Doctor Fey Kastil
Quinn walked in and wondered what she had walked into since it sounded like someone was in extreme pain and it felt like walking into a freezer. She wrapped her arms around herself as she moved further into the lounge trying to figure out what was going on.
