She followed Cobb over to the bar, and whispered as she stepped passed him, “I’m going to pretend I didn’t hear that, otherwise I’d have to defend my own honor, and that won’t be pleasent.” Since no one was there yet Cobb could be relatively safe in assuming she was half joking.
“My poison of choice? Iocane: odorless, tasteless, dissolves instantly in liquid, and is one of the deadlier poisons known to man. But to drink, I’ll have water.”
Lt Synthi-er, CNSCobb knew this game. He’d played it with his own father. And also with his son. And while the moment saw him possessed of neither the strength nor the will to recall those occasions fully, still he could not resist replying with a wink and “All right. Where is the poison? The battle of wits has begun!”
Casela actually smiled. “It ends when you decide and we both drink, and find out who is right and who is dead.”
Then, turning to the bottles, he scanned them for what felt like an age. “Where is the poison?” he muttered again to himself as he disappeared behind the bar and began rummaging loudly. About two minutes and a couple of smashed bottled later and Zachariah finally resurfaced, his hair slightly more disheveled, and placed on the counter top a bottle of Altairian water, a bottle of Bolian tonic water and a bottle of Terran mineral water, along with a glass filled with ice and a slice of fresh lime.
Casela took the Terran mineral water and poured it into the glass and then squeezed the lime juice into it and dropped the lime in. “Thank you Zachariah.”
The doctor was glad to be invited to a social that she didn’t have to wear a uniform for. In uniform, she always looked strange due to her shape, there was no way around that. Out of uniform, however, she could alter her wardrobe to better suit her shape and look significantly less strange if oddly dated. Her outfit of choice, the 1940s Zoot Suit in dark purple with silver and gold accents. The sharp angles and exaggerated shape allowed the doctor to hide her own unusual disproportionality making her look almost normal. Her hands still stand out though with regular size palms that have abnormally long fingers, makes the 20th-century business suit a great Halloween costume used to compare her to a certain faceless horror. The thought made her smirk, she would have to see if the Captain planned a Halloween party.
On her way to the lounge, a positively appropriate place for her attire, she turned quite a few curious heads caught off guard by the extreme appearance of her outfit. The doors to the Jörmungandr slid open to reveal the tall woman with her black hair tied back in a long French braid, which is the most let down she’s been seen with given her hair is usually tied up under a surgical headcover. To go with the ridiculous suit is an equally ridiculous hat and peacock feather. The doctor strides over to the Captain at the bar in time to hear Casela’s Iocane quote and chuckled before making one herself. “My name is Fey Kastil, you ate my cookies, prepare to die.” Even though the raspy voice, a hint of Spanish accent could be heard.
Ah, so the Doctor was playing too, although for a moment Cobb was so lost in absorbing her appearance that he almost forgot to respond. But eventually he grinned at her and mischievously murmured, “That does put a damper on our relationship, dear Doctor.”
The Doctor laughs, a sound that would make anyone cringe, unfortunately. “I wouldn’t worry about that Captain.”
Casela moved off to let Fey and Zachariah talk. A few people had arrived and it was her job after all…she would be back for cake though. Who didn’t like cake?
“Speaking of, I hope you don’t mind, I brought a cake.” The Doctor snapped and pointed at the door in time for one of the nurses to wheel in a cart with a stasis box on it. Having timed it so well, the Doctor turns to the pair with a wide smile.
- Doctor Fey Kastil
“Cake?” the Captain exclaimed, all but clapping his hands together at the sight of the stasis box.
Elsewhere in the lounge, however, the other party-goers did not seem so enamored and some of them could be heard whispering nervously on the appearance of both the doctor and her grizzly equipment.
Casela made a slow pass, and stopped conversationally, “Did you know that the good doctor’s sister is a quadrent renowned chef? That’s one of her cakes in that box over there. Isn’t it nice that the doctor is sharing that bakery perfection with the whole crew?” She actually had no idea if Fey’s sister had made it, but she knew from Fey’s file who her sister was. She looked pointedly at the crew members, shaming them for their behavior.
Doctor Fey walked over to the large stasis box and deactivated it so she could open it. The smell of cream cheese frosting hits the lounge as the stasis walls are taken away. In the shape of the galaxy, this chocolate cake was covered with appropriate colored icing to mimic the Milky Way Galaxy and was quite reasonably sized. “There should be enough for everyone to have three or four pieces, I expect much of it will find it’s way to your ready room.”
“Look at that, now!” the Captain exclaimed, running over and, for several moments, simply walking in circles around the cake so that he could inspect it from all angles. “Why, it looks almost too good to eat!” Then with a wink to the Doctor, he added, “Almost.”
“Crew,” he then called out into the room. “Our wonderful ship’s doctor, Lieutenant Kastil, has provided us with this delicious looking cake! I would like you all to join hands now as a sign of appreciation for her, and her sister’s hard work.”
Once the applause, rambunctious from Cobb himself, more hesitant and restrained from other corners of the room, had subsided, Zachariah lifted the knife and then moved to stand protectively behind the sponge masterpiece.
“Of course, as your Captain I would never ask any of you to do that which I myself would not. So, with that being said, I think it only fitting that I sample the first slice. In my duty as your commanding officer, of course.”Then, carving out a reasonably large piece for himself from the upper pole of the sphere, Cobb retreated to the bar where he could enjoy the sweet confectionery in peace.
Casela walked back by Zachariah and paused to ask, “Is it as good as it smells? Because it smells like culinary perfection.” She looked around and studied the room for a moment. As she spoke she quickly programmed the computer from the console near the bar. “Perhaps some music? It will get the crew moving rather than standing around staring at each other.” The music began to change to something more conducive to a party.
But at the far-left of the room, curled into a booth with his hands wrapped around a steaming mug of tea, shipyard engineer Copper turned to his companion, Clark, and muttered, “Is it just me or does it feel like the environmental controls are busted in here? I’m absolutely freezing!”
- Captain Zachariah Cobb
Casela heard Copper and Clark and feeling rather irritated at having to be at the party to begin with decided to make an example out of them. She strode over, Copper and Clark couldn’t miss her. And of course her reputation went before her. She leaned her hands against the table and for several minutes simply stared at them, one to the other, with a single brow raised. After their eyes had dilated sufficiently and they’d both gulped, Casela spoke. “Do you know what is colder? The vacuum of space. It’s plenty warm in here. Do I make myself clear?” After several nods each, Casela walked away. Of course they were talking about her now, but she was used to it. Better her than the good doctor.
Lt. Synthi-er, CNSAs the counselor approached their table, both men had ceased their conversation and stared at Synthi-er, open-mouthed. Clearly, if her reputation as a razor-sharp interpreter of the human psyche hadn’t yet reached their ears, then her reputation as a kick-ass member of the RTF team had. So they offered no defence to her onslaught and merely sat frozen and wide-eyed in their seats.
However, as soon as she walked away, Clark could be heard reprimanding the other, “See? You nearly got us in trouble then! As if it’s not difficult enough being on this ship without you going and insulting everyone because you forgot to wear a sweater!”
A few minutes later Casela walked back by the table and without a word dropped a sweater on the seat and kept going. Okay so maybe this job as CNS can be more fun than I anticipated, she thought to herself at the confusion on their faces.
The Doctor turned back to the Captain and asked for water herself. The drawback of the Zoot Suit was that it was very warm to wear and she was already sweating.
- Doctor Fey Kastil
His first piece of cake devoured with record speed, Cobb set down his empty plate with a mournful expression then handed Fey a glass filled with ice and a slice of lime. Indicating to the same bottles he had previously set out for Casela, he repeated, “Altairian water, Bolian tonic water or Terran mineral water. Please help yourself, Doctor. Or,” he added, nodding to the other bottles on display, “perhaps something a little stronger? We are off duty tonight, after all.”
Being the on duty officer Ryder was dressed in his unfirom as he walked in the Lounge. The lounge was usually busy but tonight it easily had twice as many people within its doors. This also included the non-enlisted who had also been extended the Captain invitation. Ryder was one of those officer who didn’t mind mingling with the work force that was behind the smooth running of the ship and wondered if it would be a good gesture to open the doors for everyone in the future. Having been greeted by others officers and crewman he finally made it to the bar where he poured himself a Saku GO, an Estonian Beer which was the ships current house drink and this particular one was non-alacholic
- Commander Ryder, XO
Casela was returning from getting cake when she saw Ryder behind the bar. Much to her frustration she caught his stare for a moment and then looked away. She had the overwhelming feeling to move to the far corner of the room, but moved toward Zachariah instead. “The crew seems to be enjoying themselves.” Casela took a bite of the cake and savored it. “Fey, your sister is a magician. I’ve never had anything better.”
“Thats because you’ve not tried anything I’ve made yet Cas- I mean Lieutenant” Ryder had followed her, not because he wanted to speak to her specifically but because he too wanted to speak to Cobb. The flip side was he did want to spend time with her, but their… working relationship was certainly one filled with large jagged pointy spikes, neither really wanting to admit what the other was thinking or feeling which meant they just settled with a weird angered tone every time they spoke filled with sarcasm.
Casela paused in her stride and glanced up at him, and of course the first thing that popped into her mind gave her far too many ideas. His hasty “lt” snapped her out of it and she shook her head slightly. The effect this man had no her was ridiculous and unacceptable. Of course he was on duty, she wasn’t. Her voice dropped so only he could hear. “Are you offering to cook for me? I never turn down a meal. Though dinner won’t be quite as....” she glances at him, almost daring him, “intense…but it should prove interesting.” But as far as everyone else was concerned they were simply getting cake. One day I’m going to stop baiting that man. But right now it’s too much fun.
“Ryder, thank you for joining us,” Cobb called out from the other end of the bar where he was already working through his second piece of cake.
“My Pleasure Captain, though I can’t stay long. I’ve already broken regulation by leaving the CIC but Ensign Michaels has everything under control for short time.” He chuckled sipping the non-alcoholic beer he had just poured.
But it seemed that, whatever situation was developing in the corner of the room had not yet played itself out fully. And now, poor shipyard engineer Copper could be seen leaping out of his seat, his left arm cradled to his chest.
“Ah! It burns! It burns! Help me!” he yelled to anyone who would listen.
- Captain Zachariah Cobb
Lt. Synthi-er, CNS
Ryder put down his drink and left his present company to check what the commotion was, “What’s going on, Copper isn’t it?” He called out finally closing the gap to the man, Cooper a shipyard engineer was cradling his arm. “Well spit it out man.”
- Commander Ryder, XO
Casela watched Ryder move over towards Cooper. She tapped Cobb on the arm and pointed. She as sure the Cmdr had whatever it was in hand, but it was a shame if problem started at the first crew event of their voyage.
Lt. Synthi-er, CNS
The Doctor didn’t get much time to reply to the captain or the surroundings when the engineer called out for help. As quickly as she could get through the crowd, she was there with a tricorder out. The nurse that had brought the cake pulled out a full medical kit from under the cake and started heading toward the doctor to back her up. “Commander, please relax and allow Cooper to speak on his own terms. I want to be sure he’s awake but I don’t want to panic him as that may send him into shock.” The nurse opened the kit next to the doctor and turned to clear the crowd away from them so she could do her work. “Give the Doctor some room, let her work.”
