GLaDOS stood on the Viewing deck in the Starbase, looking into the drydock, where her new ship sat. She was nearly finished her refits. Well, it was a private viewing deck. Her own personal space that she had found many years ago in her early days on the Starbase, from which she could view whatever ships were docked inside. Her personal effects had already been transferred over. The power cubicle where she could rest, a vat of inert biological material for her arm reconstruction project, testing equipment for her mechanical components, the usual. She let out a small breath of air, then turned and headed out, back to the main corridors. On the way, she encountered Kipper, carrying a small animal case along with her. GLaDOS stopped the woman in order to peer inside, and was a little surprised to see the inhabitants of the carrier. “Chell and Wheatley?”
“Sure are. I brought them off Viking when we left, been taking care of them. Was gonna surprise you that I had them but I guess it’s a bit late for that now,” the scientist said with a small grin.
“I had lost track of them around the time that I contained the … well, you know. I thought they were still there. Thank you, Kipps,” GLaDOS put her natural hand on the woman’s shoulder and squeezed slightly, a small smile gracing the edge of her mouth. GLaDOS had to do all her emoting through her mouth and eyes, as her voice carried no tone other than monotone.
“I got a whole area set up for them in one of the labs earlier this morning. It’s turbulence safe, and it can be folded up if we need the area for something other than rabbits.”
GLaDOS and Kipper stepped through the airlock, and then they were inside the Leviathan. GLaDOS took a moment, then they headed towards the nearest turbolift that would take them to the science deck. “It’s so shiny…”
“And functional,” GLaDOS agreed.
“A nice change, for sure.”
With that, they descended into comments about the ship and other small-talk, happily passing the time until they arrived at the Science labs and properly got to work. Not all the supplies had been delivered, but what had been could be put away and organized. As they worked, L’Tee joined them, and after squealing briefly about the presence of bunnies, the Trill started helping.

Cobb knew that smell. As a small boy he had raised small animals in his parents yard in Nantucket. As a young adult he had discovered the joys of outdoor camping and of hunting for one’s own food. Either way, he was unsure now whether his nose was leading him to a replicated banquet or a damned bloody petting zoo. Following the scent brought him to one of the main science labs and he exhaled with relief when his hand on the access panel granted access (he had already found himself blocked from a smaller lab on deck 13, something he’d raised a priority 1 complaint to Admiral Roebuck about but was yet to receive a reply).
Stepping inside the room, all thoughts of rabbits, served with rosemary or otherwise, slipped from his mind as he observed the two individuals before him. His blue eyes fixing on Kipper and an expression of slight irritation forming on his face, he indicated to GLaDOS as he commented “I didn’t realise we had any…anomalies on board yet. Is she…safe?”

“Most certainly not, Captain,” GLaDOS replied with a slight smirk, her mechanical eye glowing bright orange for a moment as she scanned him briefly.
She stepped over and extended her right hand for a handshake. “I am Lt. Commander Eleven of Eleven. Also known as GLaDOS. Chief Science Officer and head of Research. I would have thought you would have done a little more research into who is crewing your vessel before showing up.”
Kipper, for the most part, said nothing, just gave the man a small wave and kept working on the organization. “These are some of my team, Kipper and L’Tee,” GLaDOS gestured in turn to each of them.
A small part of her didn’t blame the Captain for the mistake. She wasn’t exactly wearing Starfleet blues. She could get a shirt or something just for visuals, but she honestly preferred the plain grey. “I’ve been a member of ARU for over a decade. Yourself?”

Zachariah frowned deeply and ran a hand through his long, dark hair. Every step he took through this ship, every corner he turned and every threshold he crossed, brought him something new and unexpected. And absolutely bloody terrifying. Borg. Or, at least, at one time she had been so. Would he be given a Breen as a First Officer? How about a Jem’Hadar for CMO?
But this one was different and, despite his initial faux pas, he had already been briefed on the one they called GLaDOS, had been told that she was one of the most accomplished ARU scientists in the Federation. Also that she would outrank him in matters of Abell research, something that Cobb was currently ignoring rather than wrestle to come to terms with. He’d had enough upheaval recently to last him several lifetimes.
“Almost seventy-two hours,” he laughed eventually, in answer to her question on his length of service in the ARU. Pitiful to speak it out loud. But he was not here for his skills in the sciences or his knowledge on random anomalies. He was here because, once upon a time, he had commanded a Starfleet vessel through one of the darkest times in Federation history. And it was the hope of the ARU and of Admiral Roebuck that he would either do the same again or, at the very least, die trying.
“I…have a lot to learn, still,” he offered in consolation, to himself as much as to anyone else in the room. “So it’s good that they sent me such an experienced Science Chief to make up where I might be lacking, eh?”

GLaDOS gave the man a once-over. He was discheveled, and her wide-spectrum sensors could sense some imbalances in his temperature and eye dilation. He didn’t seem like the sort of person who would be trusted to be in charge of a ship and yet… Here he was. She’d read his file. His history within the Federation. The war. He was a commander who kept his cool even is the stress of war. So despite his current apparent status, she could tell there was something else there.
“You give of an impression of incompetence,” GLaDOS commented, in a low voice so that her team wouldn’t hear. “But I know the people in charge of the ARU. I trust their judgement. And if they think you are the right man for the job…” She reached out with her natural hand and put it on his shoulder with a small nod. “I will be behind you.”
And she knew how important it was to have a senior staff who supported their Captain. Hopefully Cobb would be able to prove himself to everyone else soon.
