The Leviathan, Bejal’s first official posting out of the academy and … that was the majority of what the ensign really knew. The ship name did not appear on any fleet records and it had been impossible for him to determine the ships class or make before boarding. The mission assignment he had received had mostly gone over the classification level and protocols and his induction into this “ARU”. Like the ship this ARU, had no other mentions in fleet records and Bejal was still not entirely clear on the full definition of “anomaly”.

The tall and lanky Trill made his way along the corridors of his new posting, searching for the sick bay. A simple smooth and flattened stone was rapidly flipping between his fingers as his mind raced, otherwise he was putting all the energy had to appear confident. Fresh out of the academy and recruited into well whatever this was. Bejal’s heart was pounding but if he learned one thing on the Challenger it was how to focus through the anxiety. Doubts were seeding in the back of his mind, he knew he had the academics down but covert operations? Right out of the academy? His docent deemed him unfit for the joining due to his “nervous disposition” and yet Starfleet seemed to be putting a lot more faith into him.

His thoughts were cut short as he realized he had arrived outside the sick bay, taking a deep breath he stepped inside. Giving a polite nod to the crew members that were around he sought out the CMO.

“Ensign Bejal Sozenn reporting for duty., sir.”

Brad turned about from the organization he’d been supervising and smiled at the ensign. “Commander Loughty did mention offhand I’d have a new ensign soon - welcome aboard!” The CMO smiled disarmingly. “Now, let’s get two of your checks out of the way, then you just need to go talk to Lt. Nyman. Which one do you want to start with?” Behind his grin, Brad mentally prepared himself for the barrage of questions most new transfers asked about the ship and its mission, and their job in that (shockingly similar to everywhere else, though it did have its quirks.)

Bejal smiled nervously and very formally saluted the Lieutenant assuming a rigid posture. “Checks, yes I .... ” The young cadet began to stammer a bit, his original train of thought derailed by the various questions bubbling forward in his mind. “Ok I need to ask, what exactly is a anomaly? Is it just any undefined phenomena or is there a specific zoology or taxonomy required to categorize as a anomaly? What exactly is the mission? Are we a research vessel? How classified are our missions? What exactly our the medical duties on board? Do you normally recruit cadets? How do we track anomaly? How long have you been in the ARU?” Once the dam broke questions just began pouring out of his mouth at rapid fire. Hopefully the Lieutenant hap prepared himself.

Brad laughed at the stream of questions. “Okay, slow down. Technically, it’s any phenomena, although there are classifications and we don’t typically deal with the lowest-level ones - those are what the main fleet ships do. Technically yes, and there is a lot of research that happens, but the first half of that mission is containment - we have to have the thing before we can study it. Extremely classified. Officially, the ARU doesn’t exist as far as most people are concerned. Our duties are pretty much standard 90% of the time and figuring out how to heal whatever really weird mess they got themselves into 10%, and for the most part unless things go really badly you won’t need nor have access to the containment parts of the ship. Yes, not out of every graduating class, but it doesn’t never happen. I’ve been here about 2 and a half years now.” He smiled. “Did I miss any?”

Bejal hung on every word of the lieutenant’s answers his mind still reeling over the implications. His formerly stiff shoulders had relaxed a bit as the young ensign took a seat across from the Lieutenant. Taking a moment to process all the information, the cadet nodded slowly. “I believe so yes, I do apologize for all the questions. I just.” He paused here to take a breath. “My minds been racing since getting this assignment, I never expected my first posting to be something like this.” Taking another breath here as he straightened himself out a bit more the ensign returned his professional posture. “I suppose we should get started on those checks, I will probably ask you more later though. Sorry in advance.”

“Indeed,” Brad laughed. “Don’t apologize for asking questions though. I’d rather any one of us learned than end up causing some critical error, especially with how volatile things end up on this ship sometimes. If you aren’t sure, ask. That’s why I’m the department head - so I can get summoned any time of day if need be.” He motioned Bejal to follow him. “You’re medical, you know the drill. Anything I should expect to find?”
