Saoir slipped away quickly. The Romulans had been uncomfortably open, and it unsettled him. His mind tried to organize the pieces of info he’d gathered, the partial communications with Aquincum and the brief exchange with Vikshana. Saoir kept his eyes forward, avoiding the gaze of passing Romulan crew members. He decided that he needed to find the others, especially the counselor. If anyone knew what was really happening here, it might be him, and the medical bay on Deck Five was his best bet.

As he rounded a corner, his mind traced the layout of the ship once more. The structural damage on Deck Five had caught his attention earlier, and while it was a risk, it also offered an opportunity. If they needed to make a quick exit or sabotage something, that would be their weak point. The knowledge sat in the back of his mind, ready to be used if things went south.
He approached the turbolift, careful to make his actions seem routine. There was a Romulan officer standing near the entrance, their gaze fixed on a panel. Saoir suppressed his anxiety. He stepped forward, nodded briefly at the officer, and entered the lift. Once inside, he exhaled, tension rolling off him in waves.
“Deck Five,” he muttered quietly.

The Romulans had to be aware of the Starfleet officers moving about their ship, and if they were playing some deeper game, every second counted. His fingers tapped restlessly against his side. The Romulans were giving too much leeway, and Saoir didn’t trust it for a second.
The turbolift doors slid open, revealing the damaged corridor of Deck Five. Sparks flickered from overhead panels, and the air smelled faintly of burnt metal. Saoir stepped out, scanning the area. No one was in sight, but the damage was worse here than he’d expected. If the counselor was still in the medical bay, he had to be careful. Saoir moved forward, steady but quiet, staying close to the walls.
As he neared the medical bay, he paused at the corner, listening for any signs of movement inside. The doors were slightly ajar, and faint voices could be heard. Saoir couldn’t make out the words, but it sounded like two people. He cursed under his breath, unsure if one of them was the counselor. He needed to know who was inside before making his next move.
His fingers brushed the hilt of the small utility knife he kept hidden in his sleeve. It wasn’t much, but it was better than nothing if things got bad. Saoir glanced around once more, making sure the hallway was still empty and crept closer to the entrance. The voices grew clearer now, Romulan, but still indistinct.

With a quick, controlled breath, Saoir slipped into the room, sticking to the shadows by the entrance.

From a glimpse inside the room one could see three figures. One was an armored guard with a disrupter rifle. The second, with scanning device and a slightly different uniform, was likely one of the medical staff. The third Romulan laid unconscious on the medical bed between them, restrained in some sort of field. Not someone who Saior would recognize.

The medic half-listened to the security officer while completing their examination of their unconscious patient,

“I understand the Commander has her reasons, but I feel she should be taking security a bit more seriously,” he started,

“There’s this incident. Before this, it was assigning Gan and Lornal to guard the others. I mean that fight was over before it even began if you ask me. Meanwhile, I probably could have taken on either one of them myself.”

“Really?” the medic replied, skepticism clear in their voice. They glanced up, at first rolling their eyes. It was only then that they caught sight of Saoir.

The way the medic’s expression suddenly shifted when they saw him tipped off the other officer. He turned around in response, using the light at the end of his rifle to get a clearer visual.

“Well, what a coincidence,” he said with a smirk, in contrast with his companions more alert expression,

“Lose your way to engineering, Starfleet?”

Saoir froze, his mind calculating his options in an instant. He kept his expression as neutral as possible, letting the officer’s mocking words slide off. He raised his hands slightly, palms open, in what he hoped would seem like a harmless gesture.
Then he said in a steady voice. “I got turned around.” He gestured vaguely to the corridor behind him, as if that had been his original destination all along. “I was meant to be checking some of the power relays down here. Thought it would be faster to head to Deck Five since it needs more attention after the damage. Didn’t mean to interrupt anything.” He shifted his gaze briefly to the unconscious Romulan on the medical bed, then back to the officer.
“Look, I didn’t mean to interrupt anything here. If it’s all the same, I’ll just get back to work. You know how it is, ship’s gotta stay in one piece.” He kept his tone light but purposeful, hoping it was enough to convince them to let him go.

Without waiting too long, he added, “The sooner I finish, the better for all of us.” He kept his expression neutral, ready to move the moment it seemed safe.

The Romulan security officer shot a smirk back toward the medic, who in response only subtlety shook their head. However their, focus and weapon, were both still trained on Saoir.

“Power relays, huh? They must be pretty busy to send you down here by yourself, without telling anyone.” the officer dropped the smirk but kept the weapon steady as he continued,

“You ought to be more careful, you know. There are some people who already aren’t too happy with you and your friends being on board in the first place. Sneaking around like that could give them an opportunity to solve that problem. I might even suggest you stay here, until we can clear this up with command.”

Then, unexpectedly, the officer put his weapon to the side, and let it gently slide off his shoulder onto the ground. They lunged toward a control panel, and door behind Saior locked shut. The medic looked practically mortified and made an effort to stand further back into the corner of the room. The security officer meanwhile took a few moments, appearing to be - stretching?

“I’m going to give you a far shot,” he said, kicking his weapon away in the direction of the medic,

“Me and you, no weapons, and if you win I let you walk without telling anybody. I win and my friend here patches you up. Nobody gets hurt too bad, nobody gets in trouble.”

Without waiting for any sort of agreement, he was already in prepared in fighting stance and ready to go.

The smirk on the officer’s face, the unease in the medic’s eyes, this was a setup. They wanted a fight, and this wasn’t just about keeping the peace. Saoir had seen this play out before, in the eyes of bullies and those who wanted to assert dominance.

But Saoir was a survivor. He didn’t fight unless he had to. The officer’s proposition was dangerous, and his instinct screamed to de-escalate, except, there was no way out. The door was locked, the medic looked terrified, and the Romulan officer in front of him was eager for a brawl.

“Fair shot, huh?” Saoir muttered under his breath, eyeing the officer’s stance. It was a taunt, a dare to engage, and Saoir couldn’t just walk away from it, not with the door sealed, not without escalating things further. He straightened his back, still holding his hands slightly raised, palms open.

“Alright,” he said evenly, his tone a mix of resignation and focus. “But if I win, we don’t just walk away. You unlock that door and forget this ever happened.”

He took a step forward, slowly loosening his stance, his gaze locked on the officer’s movements. Saoir had been in plenty of scrapes before, but he wasn’t going to rush in blind. He needed to measure the officer’s style, his speed, whether he was all talk or actually a threat.

“Let’s see what you’ve got,” Saoir added, his voice and demeanor trying to mimic that of Ensign Jackson’s, one person he knew would be thrilled to brawl and prove his combat skills. Despite everything he tried to remain calm, as he subtly adjusted his footing. His mind stayed sharp, assessing the space. If he was quick enough, he could end this without it turning into a drawn-out mess. He had no intention of letting this officer drag him into a prolonged fight, but he would defend himself. One way or another, he’d get out of this room.
