As the Lieutenant started to walk he then started to head to the counselors office. Waiting patiently, he then rang the chime to know if he was able to come in. He thought to himself “Stay calm Chase. Stay calm.” He said to himself and rang the chime. He stood there patiently.Lieutenant Matthews -COO- (Chief Operations Officer)
There was the sound of hurried footsteps. Shortly afterward, the door opened and revealed the Chief Counselor behind. By appearance, a blonde human of average build about the same height as Lieutenant Matthews. He had been expecting Chase, waiting with a curious anticipation, and greeted him with a slight smile.
“Ah, yes, Lieutenant Matthews, come in please,” the counselor said, stepping aside and welcoming him into the office with a slight nod, “Please, find yourself somewhere comfortable.”
He indicated the seating area, a plush rug surrounded by a few different seating choices. An armchair, a chez lounge, and a few padded stools, were among the choices.
|Lt. Nyman,
Chief Counselor|“Thank you counselor. I must say you got a nice place here. How long have you been on board?” He asked.
Chief of Operations Matthews
“A few weeks,” Nyman replied, his statement intentionally vague. He watched the new officer closely. More than just out of curiosity about their hybrid nature. There was something about Matthews that made Nyman feel tense.
“Can I get you something to drink?”
|Lt. Nyman,
Chief Counselor|“Water please Counselor.” As Matthews felt a little tense coming from Nyman. “Counselor. I don’t want to pry, but I can tell you have something tense towards me. Something I’m unfamiliar about. It’s it something to do with me that made you feel uneasy or is it because I asked you how long you have been on the ship? I may not be a betazoid but as half Vulcan and half human hybrid, I can consume some discomfort towards me. If I have said anything wrong or anything I am sorry.” He said.
Chief Operations Officer Matthews
“What? No, no everything’s fine.” he reassured,
“I’m sorry if I seem a little tense, it’s nothing you did… but I’m not really allowed to go into details, I’m sure you understand. I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable.”
Of course that was all just deflection. And knowing Matthews could sense this discomfort just made him more conscious of it, and more careful to try and conceal it. The statement was also somewhat true. Matthews hadn’t done anything, it was more his sudden arrival and lack of records beyond the bare minimum the triggered Nyman’s suspicious nature.
Still, the counselor tried to remain calm and do his job like he would with anyone else. He smiled politely, walked over to the replicator and retrieved two glasses of water. Then set them down on the end table near the seating area, allowing Lieutenant Matthews to pick which one to take.
|Lt. Nyman,
Chief Counselor|“It’s okay Counselor. Anyways this meeting isn’t about you it’s about me. Is there anything you’d like to know about me?” He asked. “and thank you for the water.” He said afterwards.
Lieutenant Matthews
“It’s no problem, you’re welcome,” the counselor responded, taking a seat, “We just have the standard questions to get through. Let’s start with, well, how do you feel about being assigned to the Leviathan?”
|Lt. Nyman,
Chief Counselor|“Well counselor. With it being my first assignment I love it. It something I’ve been wanting to do. Go out into the deep space.” He said to the counselor.
COO Matthews.
Nyman raised an eyebrow, “Your first assignment? That’s interesting. What did you do before joining Star Fleet?”
|Lt. Nyman,
Chief Counselor|“Mainly at the academy for the past few years and then was assigned here as the new chief operations officer on board as a lieutenant. I was mainly chief of operations there at the academy as a instructor actually.” He said.
COO Matthews
“Very interesting…” Nyman said, nodding along, “What made you think it was time for a change? I know you said this is something you’ve been wanting to do. Is there any reason you waited until now?”
|Lt. Nyman,
Chief Counselor|“Well I needed to wait till the cadets I was teaching to graduate then get transfered.” He had mentioned without any notice.
CoO Matthews
“That seems reasonable. And what about before that? What made you choose Star Fleet over serving in the Romulan fleet?”
Nyman wasn’t usually this direct in his questions. It was likely that his own fear and stronger than usual mistrust was effecting his professionalism. No matter how much he was trying to suppress it.
|Lt. Nyman,
Chief Counselor|“Well counselor, instead of being with the romulan fleet is because, they have asked me to leave and be with Starfleet. They were actually asking for some people to come to Starfleet and the romulan fleet has suggested I join it.” He said.
Lieutenant Matthews
“Oh,” Nyman replied with a slight smile, “I was thinking more along the lines of why you would agree to such an assignment. Was it only because of a suggestion? Or was there something that appealed to you about the position?”
|Lt. Nyman,
Chief Counselor|“To be honest counselor, it was a suggestion but also something I wanted to do. The position has always been something I’ve been looking for. Let alone, it is the same exact thing I was teaching at the academy.” He said.
CoO Matthews
The counselor took a pause to take a drink of water. Perhaps he was being a bit forward. It might be more beneficial to help Lieutenant Matthews feel a bit more comfortable. This wasn’t an interrogation.
“It seems to me like you really enjoy your job. That’s good. Not a lot of people see the value in focusing on operations. But without you, we wouldn’t have a fleet. I can appreciate that.”
|Lt. Nyman,
Chief Counselor|“Well that’s why I was at Starfleet command and at earth spacedock for the longest time testing ships operations on all vessels. Even this one counselor.” He said.
Lieutenant Matthews
Nyman leaded back, seeming a bit more relaxed. Really playing the part really.
“So you when from testing to teaching, and now running operations on a active ship. Am I right? That’s a lot to accomplish. You mentioned that this is something you’ve always want to do. Now that your here, how do you feel about it?” the counselor smiled,
“Do you feel as qualified, as you definitely are, for this position?”
|Lt. Nyman,
Chief Counselor|“Yes counselor. I’ve feel as qualified. But yes from testing to teaching to being aboard here. It has been something I wanted to do and I have gotten my wish come true. And I am honored to my being here.”
Lieutenant Matthews
“Well we are honored to have you here, Lieutenant Matthews,” Nyman replied, “Is there anything else you would like to discuss? Anything I can do to help you adjust to this assignment?”
|Lt. Nyman,
Chief Counselor|“Now that you have mentioned it. It’s more on the off the record portion. It says in my record that I have no girlfriend no spouse. Well the reason is, she’s asked me not to have her in my personal file. She also had asked to have an assignment here but Starfleet had said no. What do I do?” He asked the counselor.
Lieutenant Matthews
Lieutenant Nyman took a deep breath, another on of these type of problems,
“Well, Lieutenant Matthews, there is a bit of a difference between a girlfriend and a spouse, at according to the Federation and Star Fleet. As far as why Star Fleet may have denied her request, I don’t have access to that information.” he paused, folded his arms and leaned back,
“Are you more concerned about how this will effect your relationship or your career? I only ask because the advice I give depends on your goals.”
|Lt. Nyman,
Chief Counselor|“My relationship with her.” He said. “But I know that my career here is more important then anything.” He said.
Lieutenant Matthews
“The facts are,” replied the counselor, “If she where recognized as your partner, she could be allowed onboard in a civilian capacity. But it seems she would like for your relationship to remain a secret. How do you feel about that, though?”
|Lt. Nyman,
Chief Counselor|“That’s the thing counselor. I don’t know. What should I do about it?” He asked him.
Lieutenant Matthews
“Well, it seems like you two have already discussed where you both stand,” he replied calmly, “You said that you care about your relationship with her. Whatever decision you make then should be made between the two of you. That kind of communication is part of having a healthy relationship…”
He paused for a moment and thought. Nyman wanted to guide Mathews to a good solution, but because of his own lack of experience was hesitant to give direct advice.
“If she were here, I would be more than happy to help you with that conversation. However, because she is not, and I don’t know every detail about the situation, it would be irresponsible for me to just give you my personal opinion and leave it at that. I would advise though, considering this: Ideally, what do you want to happen next?”
|Lt. Nyman,
Chief Counselor|“Ideally. I’m not sure. That’s the predicament I’m in. I don’t know what I want to happen next. It’s just she wants everything her way. So for her it’s either her way or the highway if you know what I mean counselor. She just makes things so difficult.” He said.
Lieutenant Matthews
“That does sound difficult,” Nyman acknowledged, “Have you tried sharing with her, directly, that this is how you feel?”
|Lt. Nyman,
Chief Counselor|“I have but she doesn’t seem to listen to me at all.” He said not smiling.
Lieutenant Matthews
Nyman took on a serious look,
“I can understand that might be frustrating for you. Feeling like your partner is not open to hearing you out,” he said, seemingly hesitant but still pressing on, “What exactly happens during a conversation between the two of you that makes you feel she is not listening? For example, does she act more argumentative, or does it seem like she’s dismissive or invalidating your feelings? These are just examples, of course.”
|Lt. Nyman,
Chief Counselor|
He sat there and sighed. “It’s sadly all of the above hence the reason why she didn’t want me saying anything about it and not on record. I really need options and I don’t know what to do counselor.” He said hesitant.
