{OOC: A lot of new faces around here so I was inspired to make another lore post. I’m hyped on caffeine right now so I felt compelled to share it. You can skip this one if you want to though.}

Todd had received a personal delivery from Earth. The small cardboard box had been shipped out and now was resting on his desk in the counselor’s office. Back on Earth Theo was cleaning out some old furniture, something about needing space for a nursery. He found this box, which he knew by the label “C. Winston Research Institute”, probably contained mostly Todd’s things. It was rather polite of Theo to send over the whole box, still taped up and sealed, rather than rifling through his stuff.

Todd found many things inside: his first universal translator, a few small clay figurines he had made, a personal PaDD with his favorite music from Earth, among other things. Sunk down to the bottom of the box, was a Betazoid children’s toy. It was a disc-shaped puzzle, where the pieces slid around and made pictures or phrases. He took it out, moving it between his fingers and tilting his head slightly while observing it.

He recognized it. Lorostra, the Betazoid, had given it to him. Shortly after they had all escaped Tal’Shiar prison transport together. He was part of that small crew, about 5 total, who helped Todd escape, took back their captured ship and outmaneuvered the Romulans long enough to get into Federation space. Once safe, Lorostra was the one who took Todd to an empty crew cabin, handed him the puzzle, and promised he would be right back.

Of course, Todd didn’t stay occupied for very long, and eventually in his boredom decided to see how long he could wander the ship before getting caught. While sneaking about, he stumbled across their leader, ‘Captain Kay’ she was called, and Lorostra having a discussion in the vessel’s small mess hall. The two obviously unaware of his presence as they discussed what they were going to do with him.

“What are we going to do then, Kay?” Lorostra asked, pacing and stroking his chin in thought, “We can’t take him back to Vendor, that would be a suicide mission.”

Kay looked up from her coffee, and leaned back in her seat with an air of indifference. She shrugged,

“Then we’ll explain it to him, leave him at a station and let him figure it out from there.”

Lorostra shook his head “I- I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

Kay responded with a sigh, making her hands into a small pyramid. “Listen, I know he helped us escape and everything, that’s great. But if we get caught with him onboard it’s gonna look bad, okay? I mean, we’re already in enough trouble as it is. I can only imagine how they’re going to spin this in court…”

“Captain,” he stopped pacing, turned and faced her with a serious look,
“Kay, listen, there’s something about him you should consider.”

Kay crossed her arms, “Okay, what is it?”

“Now I don’t know if it’s something they did to him, or that it’s their biology or whatever, but… mentally, he’s an adolescent. I’d place him at about fifteen, maybe sixteen years old.” Lorostra sighed, taking the seat across from Kay. His eyes were wet with compassionate concern,

“So I don’t think it’s safe to abandon him just anywhere.”

The captain nodded, “What do you have in mind, Lorostra?”

“There is a Federation-run orphanage on a nearby starbase. Maybe they’ll take him in.”

“A Federation-run orphanage?” she huffed, “I’d say he’d have a better chance on his own than in the hands of the Federation.”

“Oh, they can’t be all that bad,” Lorostra said, a small smile appearing on his face, “After all you turned out okay.”

They actually never made it to that starbase, a federation patrol met them first. The crew, including Lorostra and Kay, were all taken into custody. Todd was able to look up what happened to Lorostra later, and found that he had been ‘successfully rehabilitated’ and was working for a more legitimate mining company. He often wondered what happened to ‘Captain Kay’, but it’s hard to look up someone’s criminal record when you never learned their full name.
