Ensign Conners was in sickbay, under observation. The gentle beeps of the biobed indicating a state of rest and recovery. He would have been cleared for discharge if not for the other circumstances surrounding his injury.

Lieutenant Nyman watched from across sickbay. He went over the Ensign’s file again: Human male, 24 years old, currently recovering from what heat stroke, which appeared to be at least partially self-inflicted. Currently seeking help for mild social anxiety.

Fingers trembled as they scrolled across the screen. Up and down through the available session notes. No history of self harming behaviors, no indication of mood disorders or other disturbances, no warning signs recorded by counseling staff.

The feeling of failure knotted up in his chest. As Chief Counselor, it was his responsibility to notice if something was wrong. How could he be so careless when it could mean someone’s life?

There had to be something else. He went over the file again…

Brad paced back and forth across sickbay, having already briefed the appropriate staff as to the needs presented in the staff meeting. He’d already read through the file a hundred times as well, not seeing any background of this sort of activity. And so he paced, not really able to do anything but with the urge to do something. Half an eye was kept directly on Conners, but he was obviously distracted, lost in thought.

On a sudden whim, he changed the direction of his stride, walking over to join the counselor. “Nyman,” he asked, “what’s Conners’ recent work activity? Could he have been affected by an anomaly of some sort since your last session with him, and who’s been consistently near him in that time?”
