OOC: To provide a vocal command point for the ongoing mission and anything happening on the ship at the same time, please feel free to communicate to the CIC or be on the CIC, small talk is welcomed between the juice bits!
Oliver wasn’t too happy with the Captain going on the away mission but her persistence and ultimately her rank subsided any objection and Starfleet regulation he could conjure, he was also astutely curious if he being a father had anything to do with his recommendations to join her being rejected. Nonetheless, he paced the Leviathan’s extremely fancy although militaristic Command Infomation Center (CIC) ~The Leviathan way of calling it the bridge~ He mostly watched, the crew were experienced and he was new and wasn’t going to force himself into the command role, he believed in earning their respect and the best way to understand a crew is to simply listen.
=^=CIC to Away team=^= The calm baritone of the ship’s Intelligence Chief sounded over the comms =^=Shutle is free and clear for takeoff, godspeed=^= the farewell was fairly standard but appropriate for the mission.
CIO
Oliver observed the chief intelligence officer, another new role he hadn’t encountered during his other postings before, from a distance, the Lieutentnat Commander initially appeared a relatively short and seemingly thin figure though it was difficult to gauge exactly from his seated position, it gave off an air of ordinariness that bordered on the unremarkable. Despite his modest height, Magnusson seemingly exuded a hidden strength, a certain ruggedness that became evident upon careful inspection of his physique and the penetrating intensity of his gaze, one that Ollie was unsure if he wanted to match or to avoid.
The officer’s eyes appeared deep grey and intense, made more so by the dimly lit CIC, which in turn provided an interesting contrast to his dark brown hair, with subtle hints of red, a question of whether they it was natural or dyed surfaced but was quickly pushed back down for another time. He also sported a meticulously kept beard adorned his face, predominantly red and adding a distinctive touch to his appearance, answering his early thought of naturality. Notably, Oliver’s attention was drawn to the scars on each cheek, each roughly five or so centimetres long, and questions boiled again.
Further signs of experience and time showed in the greying at Magnusson’s temples, contributing to an air of maturity with the man. In essence, what initially seemed ordinary took on new dimensions as Oliver observed his fellow officer over time, revealing a man of hidden depths, rugged charm, and a unique character. Oliver made a note to get to know the man better over time.
The new XO hadn’t realised he had once again made it back to the center of the room where the holographic display screen which served as the center piece and main focal point of the entire room until he heared another communication,
=^=Leviathan, this is Captain Henao. We have landed on the planet. Can you confirm our location and verify that you are receiving this transmission? =^=
Henao, CO
The away team location was displayed, and he was impressed at the quality and latency levels of the holographic, he wondered why this wasn;t standard on every ship, “Computer bring up a topographical map and simply the away team current location, match it to their signal and confirm” He said giving the computer strict instructions, the display shifted and was now a lat 3D version of the planet’s surface showing all the topographical features in real-time including the away team’s location which was as expected correct and in syn with the data being processed. He nodded to the young comms officer.
=^= Captain Henao, this is Leviathan. Location confirmed, and we’re receiving your transmission loud and clear. Keep us posted on your progress, and stay vigilant. Leviathan out. =^=
J. Ynuchausti, Comm. Officer
Once again Oliver felt that he was hardly needed, the crew worked like a well-oiled machine which left it very little to say or do, He resumed his pacing, and waited for further news. He didn’t have long to wait when the ship notified them that emergency access had been activated on one of the crew quarters deck. “Computer who access code was used and its justification:
‘Lieutenant Nyman requested emergency access to Ensign Harlow Conners on Deck Seven, Reason: emergency medical access’
“Put Sickbay communications on active listening” He ordered and just in time to hear the request for medical assistance.
=^= Lieutenant Nyman to sickbay, I need immediate assistance. A crew member is unconscious. =^=
~~~ Lieutenant Nyman, Chief Counselor
Understanding that the CIC doesn’t have to deal with everything all at once and that they were actively monitoring an away mission Oliver opted to allow the Lieutenant the opportunity to control the situation herself, however, registered a few commands into the ship’s computer to notify him of any communications or mentions of Ensign Connor or anything relating to the matter, once again Oliver didn’t have to wait long until another internal ship communication was heard this time to Engineering from the ships Chief Engineer.
=/\=”Maxwell to Engineering, I need an engineering team in Ensign Connors’ quarters ASAP,” Bradley called in,=/\=
Brad Maxwell, CMO
After careful consideration, Oliver felt it was necessary to remove the uncertainty surrounding the unfolding situation aboard the ship. The decision weighed on him as he initiated the transmission, his voice resonating with a mix of authority and genuine concern, =^= “CIC to Maxwell and Nyman, we are currently monitoring your medical situation on deck 7. Can you provide an update, please, and if you require any further assistance? Loughty” =^=
In the quiet aftermath, Oliver found himself grappling with the weight of the unknown. Despite the wealth of information already at his disposal, the Commander sensed an urgency to delve deeper and if needed help resolve the situation as quickly and efficiently as possible without stepping on anyones toes. Oliver had also made the decision to keep the Captain and the away team insulated from the potential distractions of the developing situation aboard the Leviathan, deciding that it was better for them to remain fully focused on their own task.
=^=Commander Loughty, we’re encountering geological movement on the planet even though prior scans of the planet showed no signs of significant tectonic plates. Are you picking up anything unusual up there?=^=
Cadet Toussaint looked up from her console, then said, “Commander, we are picking up the same activity, however, I am seeing movement in multiple locations on the planet. I am positive that the movements are not due to earthquakes in the planet’s geology.
Toussaint, Science
“Thank you Cadet” Oliver thought long a hard for a moment, if the result wasn’t due to geographical reasons perhaps it was biological or chemical, “Scan for life signs around the epicentres of the movement, and also run a topographical scenario of how the plant would have looked a decade a go to know and bring it up on scree, lets not completely rule out something geological but remain open minded.” He waited with his arms behind his back for the display and results to be communicated.
- Loughty, XO
“The scans are underway, Commander. Initial results should be available shortly.” Deshara executed Oliver’s orders, initiating a thorough scan to investigate the unusual results.
Delving into potential biological or chemical causes, the cadet focused on detecting life signs around the epicenters of the movement. Simultaneously, a topographical scenario unfolded, reconstructing the plant’s environment from a decade ago to provide a historical context. As the display materialized, the cadet’s attention was drawn to an unexpected anomaly—evidence of a humanoid species that evolved into a subterranean species thousands of years ago.
Deshara alerted Oliver, “Commander, the results are in. We’ve discovered something quite unexpected during the scan. It appears there’s a possibility of a subterranean influence on the movement we detected. The data reveals distinct patterns and readings consistent with a species that may have evolved to live under the planet’s surface.
This is most likely the cause of the unusual environmental factors. The subterranean species could be influencing the plant movement directly or indirectly.Toussaint, Science
=/\=”Maxwell here, sir, I expect the ensign will be fine once he receives treatment - I would appreciate an engineer down here, however. The climate controls are locked far too high.” =/\=
Brad Maxwell, CMO
=^=Understood, we’ll dispatch an engineering team to you now, Loughty out=^= He replied turning his attention to the unfolding conversation within the CIC.
- Loughty, XO
Lieutenant Kitiuas Thenis was returning back to her original assignment aboard the USS Leviathan, post her special duty detachment from the ship. The special duty had cost her a department head position, but she didn’t mind. The reason for her being pulled away had been worth it, even if it was highly classified. She flew the USS Archaeutatus, one of the Levi’s Armadillo-class shuttles, back to their home. =/\=USS Leviathan, this is the USS Archaeutatus requesting to dock. Lieutenant Kitiuas Thenis returning to duty from special detachment.=/\= She patiently waited for a response.
Lieutenant Kitiuas Thenis, Science
Jhene who was fairly new to the Leviathan and wasn’t aware that Kit was an authorized officer on the ship or her LOA for a special assignment, furrowed her brow when she received an unexpected request to dock. Quickly, she alerted Commander Loughty, her voice tinged with concern, “Commander, Lieutenant Kitiuas Thenis, piloting the USS Archaeutatus, is requesting permission to dock. Should I grant it, sir?”
Ynuchausti, Communications Officer
Deshara’s eyes widened with recognition as she heard Kit’s voice over the comms. Overwhelmed with joy, she couldn’t contain her excitement and leaped out of her seat. “Kit! I mean Lieutenant Thenis has returned!” Her voice filled the CIC with genuine happiness. Turning to Jhene, she said, “You must grant her permission to board; she’s back, and this ship is where she belongs.” A pause filled the air as Deshara turned to Commander Loughty, her gaze intense. “Isn’t that right, sir?”
Toussaint, Science
Jhene squinted her eyes and frowned at Deshara. “How dare you! Cadet Toussaint, you are out of line, not to mention your demeanor is inappropriate,” she asserted, her tone firm. “The proper protocols must be followed. Lieutenant Thenis will dock when permission is granted…from Commander Loughty. Not because you think she should.”
She locked eyes with Deshara, her voice commanding, “Sit down and let the proper channels handle this.” She turned back to her station and muttered under her breath, “I don’t know why we have cadets on this ship anyway.”
Ynuchausti, Communications Officer
Oliver, used to being around cadets and more importantly, his daughter who had a similar tendency to speak before thinking smiled and applied a fatherly tone, “That is fine Lieutenant we all get a little excited when there is a prospect of being reunited with friends and family, that said there is an appropriate course of action and I think we should take it, please grant the returning Lieutenant approval for docking and have her be met by operations to begin the onboarding. I believe her return was anticipated and her old quarters readily available. Also please ask if she would be as kind to assist us on the current matter as her knowledge and experience may prove useful to what we currently learning about this planet.
Now people back to the main matter at hand, Cadet Toussaint you had just given us a good explanation and theory behind the tremors. Let’s get that communicated in full and properly reported to the Captain please Lieutenant Ynuchausti so that she can adjust her risk assessment on the ground, and also search for any hot spots of activity. Are these a result of the hollowing of the planet’s crust or could it be that they are still actively residing below the planet’s surface and their mining and living conditions are impacting the stability of the planet? Let’s answer these questions and if anyone has any suggestions or theories now is the time to present them.” Oliver believed the best way to overcome conflict was to give conflicting parties an equal and unified goal.
- Loughty, XO
Jhene nodded in acknowledgment of Commander Loughty’s orders, quickly switching her focus back to her duties. “USS Archaeutatus, you are granted permission to dock. Welcome back, Lieutenant Thenis. Operations will meet you for onboarding, and your quarters are ready,” she announced over the comms.
Ynuchausti, Communications Officer
Deshara took a deep breath, trying to compose herself after the embarrassing outburst. She returned to her seat, as she settled back in, she focused on the task at hand. At least the Commander was nice and he seem to show a level of understanding. “Aye, Commander, I will relay the information to the away team at once,” said Deshara. In an effort to make up for her earlier lapse, Deshara politely addressed the communication officer, “Lieutenant Ynuchausti, w…would you mind opening a secure channel to Captain Henao, please? I need to provide her with an update on the scientific findings of the planet. Also, I am sorr…”
“I do not want to discuss the matter,” said Jhene sharply as her eyes burned into Deshara while she initiated the secure channel.
Deshara nodded and delivered her communication to the Captain, =^= Leviathan to Captain Henao. We’ve analyzed the geological activity on the planet. It’s likely caused by some biological underground presence. The movement we detected seems to align with an unknown subterranean species that evolved thousands of years ago. How they are causing the tremors in the planet, we are uncertain but Commander Loughty has directed us to focus on whether their activity is hollowing out the planet or causing it to be unstable in some other way.”
Toussaint, Science
“Acknowledged Leviathan, good to be back.” With that Kit began her approach to dock with the USS Leviathan, and to reacquaint herself with the crew.
Lieutenant Thenis, Science
[crosspost]
=^=Levi, this is Henao. There are some creatures here on the planet. Large. Wormlike. We were attacked. NE Davis is gone. The away team has gotten split up; we need immediate evacuation for those who are not with us. Are the transporters operational?=^=Shortly after this communication from the Captain, the CIC would quickly realize something had happened as three more NE life signs terminated.
Jhalae tried to communicate with them. “Captain this is the Leviathan. Are you receiving this communication? Captain! Ensign Jackson! Lieutenant Ruuk! Anyone if you are hearing this, respond!”
Ynuchausti, Communications Officer
“Set us to Yellow alert, =^=security teams two and three reports to Transporter room 1, Sickbay please dispatch an emergency medical team to transporter 2=”^= Oliver said, the ship instantly changing from a brightly lit room to a room with lowered lighting and a yellow hue.” Oliver took a standing position over the CIC’s holo-table instead of speaking his commands he quickly input the data for the last known location of the away team. The display shifted showing the moment they entered the subterranean structures, a few metres and then the away team remained static indicating a loss of signal. =^= CIC to Transporter room, do you have a lock on the away team’s location?=^=
NE Michaels was already attempting to establish locks on the away team when the XO’s voice permeated the air around him. He slapped the console in frustration, =^= No Captain, I mean Commander. Sir, there is to much rock and movement down there the sensors are struggling to pinpoint the away teams exact location I could try but I could be beaming back one of them, a ton or rock or a bit of both. Ensign Saoir was also working on penetrating the interference caused in the atmosphere he sounded defeated.
=^=Understood, keep trying crewman=^= Oliver took a commander lull considering his options, the Leviathan could enter a lower orbit, land even but that meant preparing the ship and they didn’t have time, he could dispatch shuttles but even that would take extra minutes. He didn’t want to just beam an away team onto the planet and put them at additional risk without support. Luckily his musings were interrupted but a glimmer of home.
Hearing the cross talk on the comms of the USS_ Archaeutatus_, Kit broke in =/\=Leviathan I can divert for immediate rescue of away team, transmit coordinates and I can make planet fall.=/\=
Lieutenant Kitiuas Thenis, Science
“Ynuchausti please communicate to the Archaeutatus that they are to immediately abort docking procedures and to head to the away team’s last known location but they are not to land until the area has been secured and received authorisation by myself or the Captain, also request they lower shields and expect some company.” Oliver again tapped his comm badge, =^= Security team one and Medical personnel prepared to be transported to the USS Archaeutatus, Security team three standby in transporter room 1 to be transported to the planet if the time comes we are able too, engineering please begin to consider a way of extracting the captain’s team if mining is required. Ensign Saoir, Please can you provide me with an update on your progress?=^= Oliver waited for the confirmations.
=^=CIC to Away team, transporters are unable to meet Starfleet Emergency beaming regulations due to interference in the atmosphere, the USS Archaeutus will be diverting to your location with a security and medical detail, and another team will be waiting to transport to the surface. We are comming. Oliver out.=^= “Lets get to work people, lives are at stake.” He knew that he didn’t need to tell them the risks of not performing their duties but he needed to let them know that he was now fully in control and that perhaps emotional outburst wouldn’t be tolerated now.
- Loughty, XO
As the alien worms, lying dormant beneath the planet’s surface, were disturbed by the arrival of the away team, an unexpected and formidable defense mechanism was triggered. This defense mechanism materialized as a potent electromagnetic pulse, a surge of energy emanating from the writhing creatures upon breaching the planetary surface. Astonishingly powerful, this electromagnetic pulse extended beyond the planet’s boundaries, reaching even the Leviathan, the colossal spacecraft orbiting above.
Upon impact, the Leviathan shook violently from the unanticipated force. The systems on board struggled to cope as the electromagnetic interference wreaked havoc on the ship’s instruments. Control panels flickered ominously, their displays fluctuating wildly as the Leviathan found itself ensnared in the chaos.
In the ship’s CIC, the crew exchanged alarmed glances with the helmsman, who was engaged in a desperate struggle with the controls. Amidst the chaos, the helmsman urgently addressed Commander Loughty, “Commander, we must disengage from orbit, sir. The planet’s gravitational pull, coupled with this electromagnetic disturbance, is destabilizing our position. I strongly advise against sending any shuttles down; they’d be at risk of being crushed under the turbulent electromagnetic atmospheric forces.”
Captain Henao
(Commanding Officer)
Deshara nodded solemnly agreeing the helmsman, her expression reflecting the gravity of the situation. “It’s the aliens, sir,” she began, her voice tinged with concern. “They’re emitting a peculiar electromagnetic field or pulse. It’s woven into the atmospheric composition, creating a sort of greenhouse effect, building up.”
The away team had managed to descend to the planet’s surface without issue initially because the aliens had been dormant. However, with the team now active on the planet, the dormant state of the aliens had transformed into a formidable barrier. Deshara continued her explanation sounding with urgency, “Now that they’re active and thriving on the surface, attempting to land a shuttle would be akin to navigating a treacherous maze of electromagnetic chaos, sir. It’s virtually impossible to breach the lower atmosphere without succumbing to the destructive effects.”
The gravity of the situation hung in the air as Deshara’s words echoed through the command center. The crew exchanged worried glances, realizing that the initial rescue plan had been thwarted by the unexpected behavior of the alien entities. The once straightforward mission had now become a complex, with the away team stranded on the planet and the shuttle unable to navigate the atmospheric disturbances caused by the aliens’ newfound activity.
