It had been a long transfer flight. Not that, that bothered him. He could spend weeks in relative solitude and what most people would considered mind crushing boredom. He just stared into space as his mind worked through a series of logic questions. It was this weird open eyed meditation that earned him the moniker the “Windwatcher” when he was younger.

The courier ship barely came within transport range before getting clearance and beaming the officer aboard the Leviathan. He carried a huge rucksack. The one bag policy was one of the many things that carried on through the centuries. A good officer could carry all his possession in one bag. Kolar was not only a good officer, but also one that didn’t have a lot of personal items.

The transporter been had just finished materializing him as he began to speak. “Balfor Kolar. I’m the new CSO.” He scanned the room resting on the transporter officer. He wanted to be certain there wasn’t someone that he need to say sir to.

Saoir extended a respectful welcome to Balfor Kolar, his demeanor mirroring that of a senior officer, a position he hope to obtain soon. “Welcome aboard, Lieutenant Kolar. I’m Ensign Saoir, the Transporter Operator. If you’ll follow me,” he said, guiding Kolar through the Leviathan’s corridors. “This ship’s layout can be a maze, but you’ll get the hang of it. Your padd has the onboarding schedule; we’ve got a tight-knit crew here, and we’re glad to have you.”

Kolar smiled gently. It was strangely comforting like a old friend or a the face of a proud parent. It wasn’t even a true smile, it was more of an upturn of the corners of his mouth with a slight nod. It was the warmth and openness of his expression that created the feeling of comfort.

He didn’t really need a guide he informed himself of the paths to the key areas of the ship, bridge, transporter rooms, engineering, science labs, sick bay, shuttle bay, to memory.

“I hope to earn your trust and the honor of being accepted as one of your own.”

Observing the absence of personal items with Kolar, Saoir remarked, “Not one for excess baggage, are you? Efficient, just what we need,” nodding subtly as they moved through the halls.

“I was told once that if you couldn’t fit it all in one bag you had too many things. The Prophets also speak of the pursuit of material goods.” He paused as he hefted the sack over his shoulder. “Also since my last ship decided to donate most of my private property to the vacuum of space due to a hull breach. One could consider it bad luck or a message from the Gods.”

He nodded to the Transporter Chief, “If I am not taking you away from your duties, I’d welcome an escort.”

OOC: Mind if I jump in here too?

OOC: Np, I’ll write you in

IC: Saoir acknowledged Kolar’s request with a nod. “No trouble at all, Lieutenant. I am sorry your items where lost in the void of space. Hopefully there was nothing sentimental or valuable among the items.” As for the escort comment Saoir said, “Duty comes first, but showing you around is part of mine. Before we beggin our tour, we’ll make a brief stop at the security office; Lieutenant Mavix will want to meet you. She is quite interesting.”

“Nothing that can’t be replaced. I have been at this long enough to know travel light and while items may represent precious memories, it is the memories that are valuable not the items,” Kolar responded.

Leading Kolar through a series of winding corridors, Saoir continued, “Even with her unique personality, Mavix is thorough. Just remember to keep your access codes secure, and you’ll get along fine. Security’s just down this way.”

As they approached the security office, Saoir pointed to the entrance. “Here we are. Lieutenant. Mavix should be expecting us.” Saoir rang the chime to the security office.

Security types generally were all cut from the same cloth in Starfleet. It was not a derogatory thought but more an observation. Security officers had the sole responsibility of keeping the crew safe. All their security protocols reminded Kolar of an old saying his grandmother used which was an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Kolar waited patiently at the door to be granted entry as he thought about his new assignment.

The door glided open with a soft hiss, revealing a compact and efficiently organized security office. Saoir gestured for Kolar to step inside, his voice tinged with a subtle sadness. “Welcome to the nerve center, Lieutenant. This is where the magic happens, or so they say. I’m part of the security team, though my role doesn’t involve typical ‘security stuff,’ per se.”

Kolar made eye contact as he started absorbing the ‘welcome aboard’ speech. He took a slow blink and his eyes were no longer locked with the Ensign. They were off to the left the scanned to the right and then back to the junior officer. Kolar was not a ‘tactical’ officer, but he was observant and he committed detail of the room to memory.

It became evident that Lieutenant Mavix was currently unavailable. “Lieutenant Mavix should be joining us shortly. She’s thorough, and doesn’t like to keep people waiting,” said Saoir. While they waited he decided to delve into the intricacies of security procedures specific to the Leviathan. He knew them like the back of his hand as he had memorized every regulation.

“I’m sure whatever it is, is important.” Kolar didn’t need pomp and circumstance when he boarded a ship. In fact if it was his choice he would just appear on duty one day.

“Let’s start with the basics. Security here on the Leviathan operates on a multifaceted approach. We’ve got standard Starfleet protocols, but Mavix has implemented a few unique procedures tailored to the ship’s specific needs, especially concerning the Containment Center on the ship.”

Tapping commands into the console, he summoned a holographic display showcasing the ship’s layout. “First things first, access points. We’ve got biometric scanners at key locations, and your access codes will need to match your genetic signature. It’s an extra layer of security. The Containment Center is specially guarded, with two cardinal rules from the Captain: do not feed the anomalies and do not antagonize them.”

“Its only paranoid until you need it.”

The Leviathan wasn’t just a starship; it was a floating fortress, and its security reflected that. Saoir continued, “Surveillance is another critical aspect,” he said, displaying footage from various sections of the ship. “We’ve got a network of advanced cameras and sensors. Our engineering department has fine-tuned the system to detect even the slightest anomalies. It’s like having eyes almost everywhere. Security is not just about reacting to threats; it’s about preventing them. Just so you know, a lot of scary things have happened on this ship. I hope you know what you signed up for.”

Kolar raised an eyebrow. “I understand. I have dealt with some pretty scary things. That being said, when the Prophets call me to the Celestial Temple, they call me. However rest comfortably, it is my understanding, I am far from their call.”

At that moment, the doors to the Transporter Room parted to reveal Lieutenant Ashara Mavix, her auburn hair tied into a tight ponty tail that seemed to somehow accentuate her Trill markings, “Lieutenant Kolar! Glad to see you got on board ok, Ah trust you’ve given ‘im the rundown Saoir?”

-Lieutenant Ashara Mavix: Chief of Security-

Kolar looked at her calmly. There was a non-judgmental warmth that just radiated off the man as if you were slipping into a warm bath when he was speaking to you. “Hello, Its Lieutenant Balfor. On Bajor family names come before given names. It is a very common misinterpretation.” Plus many people missed the ridges on the nose and presumed Bajorians were humans. It probably happened to Trills as well.

He glanced at the transporter officer, “Yes, I do believe Saoir was getting me up to speed. Very intricate security protocols.” He didn’t want to say over the top, which he thought, but he also was speaking the truth when he said, it was only paranoid until you needed it.

Kolar

Saoir was impressed on how efficiently Lieutenant Balfor corrected her about his name. The Levi had a diverse array of species aboard so it was important that one knew how to navigate the different cultures and practices of each one. He addressed the Security Chief with a nod as he said, “I am Lieutenant Mavix and we are almost done here. I have a few for protocols to discuss with Lieutenant Balfor…unless you wish to take it from here?
