“Nothing for me, thank you.” Ruuk said as he took a seat.

“I guess we can have something later at the mess hall.” Meylan replied.

The office was probably far from saying, cozy. It was more like a museum of machines. A few pictures hanging on the wall showed the ship and its skeleton. Below them had a display table not for jewelry but for warp and impulse engine plastic models. And let’s not forget 1/200 sized ship model stated ‘SS Leviathan’ on the right side. The desk, piled with a screen and console, potentially for monitoring the ship’s health. The status showing was not so different from the table in Main Engineering, except here was more like a simplified, summary status. Another desk, however, was a bunk. The below was piled with PAADs; The previous encounters related to creatures and some empty frascos left by the previous CE.

Lt Meylan, Assisting CE

“I’m keen to learn more about my assignment here on the Leviathan. I’ve done my best to read as much as I can into the ship and it’s missions. But as you will know, information on the ARU is… difficult to ascertain.” Dayner said in reference to the fact that all of the Documents he could find with information about the ARU or the Leviathan was heavily redacted. This meant that Dayner wasn’t quiet as prepared for this posting as he would like to be. But he knew in time that all he needed to know would be revealed.

“Consider that as Levi’s way of welcome.” The assisting CE smirked and said about the not-so-colorful document that everyone received on board this ship. “I will register your information now so you can access computer logs and that desk,” He pointed to the desk with a bunk. “will be yours. There’s only one bed here. On this ship, the CA is used to taking CE’s role. With Captain’s permission, I could add your access to this office, just in case.”

Lieutenant Dayner Ruuk - Containment Architect

Iphigenia looked at Meylan as she said, “Well…your job may very well be one of the most dangerous jobs here on the ship. The last CA was…well never mind about that. Why don’t I give you a rundown of your duties?” She sat in a nearby chair and continued, “As you know we deal with events or phenomena that are beyond the scope of normal scientific understanding. As humans and other beings have started to explore the vastness of space we have naturally encountered beings and species that have abilities that we once thought were…uh..paranormal in nature.” She looked at Meylan again, then she continued, “Your job will include creating the algorithm codes in the Leviathan’s computer to contain these anomalies when they do board the ship, in addition, there is a specific area on the ship we have set up to keep them contained until we can hand them off to a secure location. You will manage this area. We must always ensure that these anomalies do not escape for if they do, they can wreak havoc on the ship. Some of them are dangerous, and some of them are harmless but have the ability to alter the mind of the crew and manipulate us into doing…stupid things. After we are done here, I will give you a tour of the area and let you see them first hand. Finally during missions, as we encounter these anomalies you will develop the best strategy, working with our CTO and Security to ensure that we capture and continue these beings.”

Henao, CO

Meylan took a seat after both officers sat. He carefully listened to the job description and operating procedures the CO stated with hands crossed, and elbows on the desk. He respectfully confirmed and said, “Understood, Sir. We have Ensign Little specialized in computer-related issues. I will notify him and see how he can implement his expertise in dealing with future unknown threats. We might run a drill when our new CA is ready!” He smiled at Ruuk and turned to the skipper. “If I may add to what you’ve just briefed, now the Engineering team has 3 things to do: Lieutenant Than Osedi and I are mainly for warp core and impulse engines, Ensign Tom Little is responsible for computer cores, and Lieutenant… Dayner Ruuk is here to contain the anomalies while working with other teams. We need to integrate specialties and rehearse to meet the intent of securing the ship’s mobilization and the dangerous anomalies.” He turned to Ruuk, “The latest anomaly was on the USS Celeste. You can access what happened after your registration is complete. From that desk.” He pointed to that bunk desk again. “You can also ask me if the document is redacted or complicated to understand.”

Lt Meylan, Assisting CE

“A drill would be very welcomed” Ruuk said. His actual contact with Anomalies was very limited. “I find any opportunity to learn in a practical a rewarding one.”

He turned a moment and looked at the Desk. It was functional work space which would suit him nicely. He didn’t bother with personal effects in his work spaces, that was something he reserved from his Quarters. He was quite a fastidious person, especially when it came to the cleanliness of his work station.

“It seems like I have a steep learning curve ahead of me” He continued. “But rest assured I will work tirelessly to get up to speed.” He said to both Meylan and the CO. He was determined to make a success of his time in this role - both from a personal pride point of view, and the fact that the safety of the Ship and it’s Crew would depend on it.

Lieutenant Dayner Ruuk - Containment Architect

“A task you will succeed at no doubt. She said to Dayner, ” Ensign LIttle will be your contact for the computer training related to your position. He is very patient and I think you will find him quite easy to work with. Lieutenant Osedi, will be your commanding officer when he is not available Lieutenant Meyland will fill in for him. Lieutenant Osedi will not bother you much and so long as you prove competent at your job he will rely on your expertise.” She stood as she said, “I think I have stayed long enough. I will leave you two to get better acquainted.”

Henao, CO

At that precise moment, the door to the office opened and the Chief Engineer was revealed standing on the other side, pausing in slight surprise at the sight of three people in the office. One hand that was half raised to his lips held a very large, oversized cup of coffee that smelt like it could also be used as an industrial degreaser or perhaps a poltergeist solvent if the need arose, and Than took a sip of this drink before tilting his head slightly looking at them. “Are we having a party?” His voice asked casually, “I must have missed the memo, I would have brought cake.”

Lt Osedi, CE

“There he is,” Iphigenia said with a smile. She placed her arm around the man’s shoulders as he entered the room. “This is the mysterious Osedi. He roams the ship and we might not see him for days.” she teased him. “No party. We are onboarding the new containment architech. Discussing training and trying not to scare him away during his first few weeks on the ship.”

“Its’ a special talent I have, disappearing for a while. You never know where I may appear.” The Trill CE ran with the tease from the Captain but refrained from the momentary urge he had to reciprocate the tease by putting his arm around the Captains waist, as she introduced him by putting hers around his shoulder. It was the coffee, he was sure. He probably put too many shots in it and his nervous system was battling a foreign takeover.

“Ah, speaking of a cake!”Meylan stood from the chair and yielded to the CE. “I might recommend one from the engineering recipe. Probably no one tried that before, though.” He implied the delicacy of parts use-only replicators.

Behind him, Than shook his head to the others in a vigorous warning.

“Is there a reason no one has tried the recipe?” Iphigenia asked suspiciously with squinted eyes as she placed both hands on her hips.

“It’s a little bit greasy.” Meylan whispered to the dubious listener, “This was part of the dept’s culture. Engineers tend to get their hands dirty, so we eat this without using utensils. Usually, this is for an annual celebration. To remember who we are and what we do. And a wish for another year’s safe voyage. But… It was banned for years because it’s way above the fleet’s new standard of sugar intake. And the way we eat this is so-called, so unhealthy.” He shook his head after he explained.

“Also, the threat of eating bio-gel residue or plasma coil lubricant is a real thing. Do you want Borg? Cause thats’ how you get Borg.” Than smirked now and sat down at his desk, draining the last of the coffee and placing the cup down on the desk with a thud. That was a lot of coffee, and he was sure that he could hear the various colors in the room.

“May Introduce our new Containment Architect, Lieutenant Ruuk.” He then turned to him, “This is the man in charge, Lieutenant and Chief Engineer Osedi.” His tone was somehow excited.

Lt Meylan, Assisting CE

Than raised his hand and waved a greeting. “Hello Lieutenant Ruuk,” Than greeted the new Officer. “Pleasure to meet you.”

Ruuk stood up and extended his hand to the Chief Engineer. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Lieutenant Osedi. The Captain and Lieutenant Meylan speak very highly of you.” He said warmly.

“I’m glad they do,” Than smirked and stood, taking Ruuks hand in a friendly hand shake. “Otherwise there would be a strong possibility either their replicators or sonic showers may experience spontaneous failures during the next cycle of maintenance drills.”

“I actually was just headed out. I wanted to come and welcome Lieutenant Ruuk aboard, give him a quick debrief.” She looked at Osedi and said, “You are the only one on the ship with an assistant and a specialist. I must admit I am a little jealous myself.”

Henao, CO

Lt Meylan, Assisting CE

“Thank you, Captain. I appreciate it.” He said in response to the Captain wishing you welcome him aboard.

Lieutenant Dayner Ruuk - Containment Architect

“Don’t be jealous Captain,” Than’s face fell into a serious expression worthy of any Vulcan, “the implication clearly is that I am incapable of doing these duties myself and need additional expertise.”

There was maybe half a second of a pause after he finished speaking, before his lips betrayed him with a grin. “Nope, I can’t hold that serious face. Ignore me, I’m more than happy to have all the additional experience and expertise we can get. This isn’t the Main Fleet any more. Thank you for dropping by Captain, it is always an honor and a pleasure to entertain you.” The Trill came to his feet and nodded his appreciation to the CO.

“You are welcome to visit us sometimes, Captain. A crash course for non-engineer crew might help you understand what we do.” Meylan smiled. He was aware that the CO is a fast learner and came from a business family. Although, he was puzzled by the motive that she joined the fleet while owning an industry already.

Than looked sideways at Henao and subtly wiggled his fingers at his side, raising an eyebrow in her direction.

She gave Meylan a look that could only be interpreted as No Thank You. Last time she attempted to blend in with the engineering crew she almost lost her hand. It would have been a shame if she had. Iphigenia was proud of her hands they were small, smooth and always well manicured. The unfortunate incident in engineering had left her with a crushed hand and several broken nails. Since then she’d decided to leave engineering to the Engineers.
She nodded at all three men then exited the room.

He then said to the CA, “I’m curious, what’s your background? Have you encountered weird creatures before? How did you deal with it? Oh, one question at a time.”

Lt Meylan, Assisting CE

Henao, CO

Than sat down at his seat once more when the Captain had left. He was more than happy to let Meylan ask a few questions for the moment as he composed himself and took more notice now of the new officer.

Ruuk returned the Captains nod and waited until she exited the room before turning to Lieutenant Meylan to answer his question.
“Regrettably my knowledge of these ‘weird creatures’ is mostly theoretical.” Ruuk said, hoping that it wouldn’t dismay the assisting CE too much. “As I’m sure you can appreciate, it’s very difficult to get up close and personal to these anomalies unless your position or line of work allows it. My interest in Anomalous Creatures has been an intense source of my interest… almost like a hobby. So I’m very well read on these things, but lack much practical experience. That’s why I was so quick to pounce when the opportunity to join this vessel arose.”

Dayner was all too aware that his lack of experience may cause some just concern from his colleagues. They would rightly question his abilities - if the shoe were on the other foot, he would do the same. This had been the source of some of his anxieties prior to boarding. But he was quick to learn and eager to please, so he hoped that this would quell some of their worries.

Lieutenant Dayner Ruuk - Containment Architect

(OOC: Back from LOA, sorry folks. Any posts I’m missing, let me know.)

(OOC: I know that feeling, only too much these days lol)

“That’s alright,” Meylan took a chair the Captain left behind it and sat. “My career started from handcrafting so, that is a hobby too. I never thought I could turn a hobby into an actual job so, I’m grateful for that.” He then showed a thinking face and said, “I do have a concern because things we’re going to encounter might not be that sweet. Even though the job is to contain but if able, you can try to communicate. I know that’s probably out of your expertise, but if anything can make your job easier and reduce casualties, you can do it. Including asking crews from other departments for help, and even folks who rank above you.” He put his hands down and said, “Imagine your ship just out of the power and cages opened. That’s right, creatures captured were released, running, and flying all over the place. What would you do? Give me 3 things you can think of as top priorities. As a CA.”

Lt Meylan, Assisting CE

“Just before you answer, let me allay any feelings you may have on your theoretical knowledge and lack of experience as such,” Than interrupted for a moment, looking at Ruuk.

“Most of what we do is theoretical, and everything that we do, never happened. If you catch my meaning.” He smiled. “Considering the nature of the anomalies that we investigate are those that are never-before-encountered, I would expect your knowledge to be theoretical in nature because, quite honestly if you had experience with these never-before-encountered anomalies, I can guarantee you I would have far more concerns and questions than I do with your theoretical knowledge.”

“The reason all of us are here is because of our ability to think on our feet and come up with solutions that work, that aren’t standard. Our theoretical knowledge is our best resource, along with our own determination and willingness to step into the darkness that others fear to approach. Seriously though, don’t use the Engineering industrial replicators for making cake. That’s just a step too far.” Glancing at Meylan, Than grinned again.

Than Osedi, CE

“Acknowledged.” Meylan smiled back at the Chief Engineer. Even though he never was a theoretical person, he appreciated the inputs the Lt just shared. If that day, the recruiting officer didn’t pass by the docking area, he would still work as a repair man for the shipyard and retired. He would never think of the opportunity he could have. His knowledge base expanded beyond his imagination. The engineer’s job was tough. Every non-engineering crews expect them to be awesomely well problem solvers. Here, ‘working’ with unknown creatures required exceptional personality or traits. He just hoped the man sitting here right now was at least mentally tough and ready for this unique assignment.

Bumping to keep it up for Ruuk :)

OOC: Thank you! :)

IC: “Thank you for you kind words” Ruuk said “They’re very much appreciated. I just want to ensure that you know that I intend to give my all to this role and make a success of it. And with your help and guidance, I feel that we’ll be able to do just that.”

Lieutenant Dayner Ruuk - Containment Architect

“Well I think we all have something to learn from each other, I may be Chief Engineer but I’m not an expert in shield containment, not anymore than I need to be at this point anyhow. Have you visited the containment deck or looked over what we have in place currently?” Than asked as he readjusted in his seat and considered getting more coffee.

-Than Osedi, CE

“I haven’t had a chance to see the Containment Deck, as soon as I came aboard I set straight to performing the standard boarding check-ins.” Ruuk said. “But I have been able to briefly read the details of what is currently in place.”

Meylan gave an I’ll-bring-that gesture and stood from the chair. “Milk or sugar?” He asked. He was usually stationed away from the containment deck, but he knew that was one of the heavily secured places, most times.

“That’s good.” Meylan back to the table with tasses of a cafe and a pot, all engraved ‘USS Leviathan’ around the corner. Then he gave a help-yourself gesture and sit back. “Things might not be as easy as just catch and contain the creatures. You can set procedures and methods or even improve the existing protocols by cases. As long as you can reduce unnecessary harm to the ship. And crews.” He said to Ruuk, “At this point, any questions or concerns about your assignment?”
