USS Leviathan
Prolific Preparation
Casela had gone through with the training program Vonn had developed and there was no true mastery of the program, and she was drawn to the program because of that.
The course didn’t challenge you, you challenged yourself, mind over matter. Even if physically you made a mistake it was the mind that had to stay calm and focused in order to get up and try again. Oh in the end she had been frustrated no end with it and the noise and temperature and the lights. But it felt incredible to be moving and of course Vonn’s offer to train with him any time was high praise.
But the issue that sent her to ask Kodek for help still remained. They were going into a very dangerous situation and she had more reason than ever to be in shape to defend herself and her family. That didn’t always mean ready to fight, but to run, climb, move and endure. So it was time to return to her own training programs. She headed to the holodeck, but bypassed the training holodeck on deck 29. She was sure if the computer recorded her being there there would be a small army that would show up to stop her. She also knew after the lack of reaction on the bridge it was a good bet she’d be back on active duty with RTF, maybe, that would be up to Vonn of course.
Inside the holodeck, Casela locked the door. It was more a precaution to give her warning if someone came in than to keep them out. “Computer run Synthi-er training program Omega. If someone tries to access the holodeck change to program Alpha immediately.”
“Acknowledged, Begin program?”
“No, reset safety protocols to 100% and novice level 3. 6 foot bo staff only.” She waited for the confirmation and then Casela took a deep breath and nodded to herself. “Begin.” Today was about seeing where she was, not pushing herself.
The scene came to life, and like always it gave her a sick feeling in her stomach. She knelt down and picked up the Red Oak 6 foot bo staff. She slipped the combat jacket off and tossed it to the side. She completed figure 8s with the staff in each hand experimentally, getting a feel for the weight of it, again, after so long and then
Casela stepped past the archway and the music began. She always worked this program to music. No words or ambient sounds. Her memories provided that. This training program was made to take certain preprogrammed elements and randomize them. She never knew who or what would come first. She started walking, in normal situations she never, well usually never, just walked into a situation. It was all about subtlety, but this program was about releasing tension, and facing demons. And today to see where she was mentally and physically in dealing with those demons.
The first opponent appeared behind her. He was particularly vicious. She never got tired of killing him over and over on the holodeck. He grabbed her around the neck from behind. She tucked her chin, turning her head to the side slightly. She grabbed his wrist and forearm, torqued her hip, ducked and threw them both across the floor. The impact loosened his hold. A quick back elbow to his face and she was up on one knee and spinning around and standing as she grabbed the bo and thrust the butt of it into the neck.
Casela turned and was moving again. This time she moved down between two buildings. The Dennis the Mennis twins. She backed up to the wall, cross stepping till she got to the first one, using both hands to spin the bo, blocking and then sweeping his leg. As he grabbed for the bo she used her hand and forearm to lock on with an arm bar and took him with her as she cross stepped back the other way. As the second punched, she used the leverage of the bo to force the first in the way using him a human shield. A quick temple strike flipped to the back of a knee sweeped the other to the floor and he was down. She moved on again.
Casela moved, flowed, from one place to the next. Each subsequent opponent dragged up demons that needed exercising. And then, the bigger badder ones appeared. The computer had chosen a linear progression this time. The next few would work up a sweat, then it would get hard. After two more, Casela stopped. “Computer freeze program.” The anger and frustration and misfired nerves she experienced with this program were gone. “Computer close program and run program Alpha. Retain bo staff. Only decrease safety protocol to 90%.” The scene changed to a formal martial arts dojo. She stepped to the middle of the mat and moved through the 5 bo katas in succession, then the opponents appeared. Each kata had a varying number of opponents. The progression through the five was random but when they finished they started over, in random order, but the speed increased as well as how hard the computer hit. It wouldn’t go too low this time. She’d build up to it.
