“Dont worry counsellor I have no intention of telling our mutual friends about the girl.” Knox murmered without looking up from his work. He passed on instrument to the nurse and collected another. He made no such promise not to study her however. “Brace yourself this will sound worse than it is.” he added as he gave a tug and a good snapping crack noise sounded. Gen’s heart rate spiked for a few second them returned to normal.
The nurse at the foot looked up and nodded from her scans of Gen’s blood flow. She smiled as Casela.
Casela gave a slight shrug. She heard bones being set before, she’d been awake to have her own set once. It didn’t phase her. She watched the monitors and nodded to the nurse with a smile. But apparently Knox couldn’t keep his mouth shut. Every nurse and med tech in there knew Gen and genuinely wanted to keep her safe. They assumed he meant ARU command and agreed that ARU shouldn’t know. He needed to be aware of who was listening.
Theo gave her a slight smile.
The darkness is changing and she can hear people screaming. confused Gen turns towards the sound, through the water, through the dark. She finds herself on the corridors of a ship. A large corridor where the crew are running around. Claxons wail overhead and acidic smoke are rising across the corridor. She can see darkness, pitch darkness closing in down the long corridor again but this time it’s moving. Alive and malevolent.
=^= All hands…static abadonstatic repeat, abanstatic ship!=^= her father’s voice yells and she knows her mother is already gone.
Like a shadowy liquid, ink black, creeping, eating the corridor as it comes. The people who fall in its path are swallowed, they scream and writhe until they are silenced by it. Consumed.
She can feel her heartbeat in her ears, feels it coming towards her. Wide-eyed she turns and does what she did the first time she stood here on this corridor. She runs.
Knox and Gen
Casela felt a sudden tiny shock on her leg. She placed a hand on Fenrir. She was okay but her heart rate matching Gen’s had concerned him. The memories offered insight that Gen hadn’t been able to face, but now was not the time to be distracted. Those memories could cause a reaction. “Dr. Knox should she be lucid enough to be dreaming?” There was genuine concern and warning in her voice.
Lt Synthi-er, CNS“Interesting…” Theo said glancing at the readouts and in particular on the brainwave patterns. “Very interesting but no…” he passed in his repair work and putting down his instruments leaned over the girl to roll her eyelids with his thumbs. Her heart rate spikes again and her O2 stats begin to drop.
“Well now, we can’t have that” Theo muttered Immediately delivering a hypo to counteract the reaction. He then pressed the tips of three of his fingers on the right hand into her neck and watched her vitals stabilise. Satisfied he picked up another hypo, held it up to the light to check it then delivered a long dose to the teens neck. “Very interesting.” he continued. It was on the tip of his tongue to sooth the girl. He settled for an internal dialogue instead. Shh now, there’s a good girl.
Gen is running. Her legs pumping as fast as she can go. She lost her shoes three decks ago. In her bare feet she throws herself into the jefferiesmtune and crawls moving as fast as her aching muscles can carry her. Her hair trialing behind her as she navigates the twists and turnsinto the Bowels of the ship. Only one thought as the screaming continues echoing all around. Got to get away.
She can hear it spread she doesn’t understand how, somehow closing the distance, as she clears another corner. Into her favorite hiding spot. Pulling herself into a ball in the 4 way junction she close her eyes, places her hands over her ears and begins to count in her head. one…two…three…she hears a low growling sound. Feral and hungry and continues in time with her heart beat. four, five, six, seven
She feels it surround her from all sides, refuses to open her eyes or move her hands. eight, nine, ten a tendril of shadow wraps around her throat and lifts her from the floor, the pressure chokes out the counting. In a panic her hands fly to the pressure and scramble and scratch at it and her eyes open. The darkness looms over and around her at the same time a shadowy hand wrapped around her neck. It expects her to scream but she can’t there isn’t enough air. It shakes her and engulfs her with the screams of everyone else, everyone on board louder and louder. Bright red glowing eyes burning into her mind and just when she can’t take any more when she knows she’s going to die…
…she is back standing in the calm, darkness, bare feet in cool water as a distant voice says soothingly. “Shh now, there’s a good girl.” Gen blinked and shuddering curcled up into a ball. She felt so tired.
Dr Knox and Gen
Casela picks up her panic and fear, but the images, as dreams usually were, were distorted and unclear. It’s okay Gen, I’m here, and so is Fenrir. You’re dreaming. Go to sleep. We’re going to take care of you. The images were disturbing and if Casela wasn’t so worried that Gen’s ‘abilities’ had broken she’d take the time to delve into the dreams with Gen, but right now, she needed to make sure she didn’t accidently hurt anyone in the surgical suite. One of the nurses glanced up at all the readings and nodded to Casela. The nurse took a cloth, and more out of motherly instinct than necessity she wiped it across Gen’s forehead. She knew Gen, most of the crew knew Gen. The saying ‘It takes a village’ really applied here. Everyone adored her, for the most part. There were a few who were wary because of that non human part of her, and Casela could admit they weren’t wrong. She was a child with no real idea of what had happened to her. But Gen was quiet and sweet, and at times very young, and others very old. She’d endeared herself to the crew. Even though there were very very few she trusted or spent time with. Casela had been hoping that as time went on and Gen got more comfortable there would be a natural discovery of the memories. So far it had been working, but with this incident, Casela was certain, she may have to push Gen, and that could be dangerous. Dealing with trauma was a tricky thing. She would need to get the recordings off Fenrir and the security and sensor logs too. Maybe Uj’aw could help her.
Lt. Synthi-er, CNSIt took a few more minutes of work as Theo finished repairing the damage and ran the osteoregenerator over the breaks and then closed the incision he had to make to correct the angle. He moved around the teens body to run the regenerator over her ribs a few times and finally switched for another instrument and stood at her head. He ran the scanner over the girls head a few times.
“I think we are almost done here.” he said conversationally. “So I am correct in assuming, counsellor, you are acting in Loco parents for this…” it was on the tip of his young to say specimen but he didn’t, smoothly replacing the word with a more appropriate “…young lady.”
Dr Knox
Casela didn’t pick up any more dreams or flashbacks from Gen and that reassured her for the moment. Once Gen was settled she would get a PaDD and download Fenrir’s memory records of the incident.
“Yes, when she first appeared on board I was put in charge of her. Considering my unique talents and qualifications I seemed to be the best choice. So far we’ve been able tooiece together her ship encountered some type of anomaly and it killed, for all intents and purposes, the entire crew and destroyed the ship. It did something to her but Doc Fey never figured out what. All tests show her as human.” No need to lie. Knox would be able to read that much in her medical file.
