“Do you take us for no more than scoundrels, Miss Luna?” Cobb returned her teasing with his own. “Of course we run drills! And complex ones at that. I am sure you will have sufficient opportunity to participate in a few yourself, soon enough!”

Luna only smiled breafly she was glad the man could take a joke. Though the smile only crossed her face for a few moments it did seam to brighten the mood if only breafly.

Her confidence was impressive, but at the same time, alarming. Was she truly prepared for the things she would face on the containment deck? Or were her words spoken for the benefit of her own courage?
“So, do you have any questions for me on these anomalies?” he offered her an opportunity to find out more, to maybe lay some of her own fears to rest. “Or the ARU in general?”

” I don’t totally understand the ARU if we are not sapose to protect the crew so what is are job realy.” She asked. That confidence still the there. She did not get the loxary of considering that something was to tuff or impossible. Its ok though because that ment she could go forward even when she know there was a possibility of failing. ” captain what would you have wanted to know when you got onboard this ship for the first time” Luna asked. There was a question he wanted her to ask that she was not asking and she was not sure what.

“Now when did I say you were not expected to protect the crew?” Cobb shot back with eyebrows raised. “At the heart of it, your duties as a security officer will be the same as on any other ship. And most certainly I will look to the dsecurity team for the safety and protection of us all. But, you are correct that the ARU adds another layer, another complexity into the mix.”

” the consuler said the Anomalies lives were to be protected over the crew.” Luna said.

“Aye, that is the mission,” Zachariah nodded. “On paper, at least. The ARU have their reasons for wanting all anomalies taken alive. And while I can not claim it as an opinion that I readily share, I must ultimately believe in good reasons to be asked for such. But that does not mean that this crew are no more than warm bodies, lining up to be tossed ‘to the pit.”

” theres a pit on this ship” Luna asked razing an eyebrow.

“No, no,” the captain shook his head. “I meant it only in metaphor. So let me tell it again, plain. No single man or woman on this crew is dispensable. Each brings a quality all of their own and the crew as a whole is better for it. I have not the power to promise that all will return from the battles we regularly face. But what I can promise is that I will do everything in my power to save as many as I can.”

” that I think is sumthing you and I can agree on” Luna said.

Cobb reclined in his chair and lightly drummed his fingers on the desktop. “And that’s a good question, Miss,” he nodded. “What would I have wanted to know? How the hell to immediately get off again?” he roared a quick burst of laughter, before immediately falling serious. “I would like to have known how not to get lost. In a universe so vast and so crammed full of living nightmares, it feels so easy to accept our own insignificance, to quit with the excuse that nothing we can do could truly ever matter. These things, these anomalies that we hold, they could extinguish every living thing ever known with the blink of an eye. What is a single being meant to do against such a threat, eh?”

He sighed, ceased the drumming and ran fingers through his hair.
“It is something I continue to struggle with daily, truth be told. Can we make a difference? Can we, as a crew, achieve anything that truly matters? But I tell you this also, Ensign Luna, I would not be here unless I believed, deep in my soul, that we can.”

” you make me think of a story my daughter likes its a boutique a child walking along a beach the tied has trapped hundreds of star fish. He picks up the animals and throws them back into the water. A man comes along and tells the boy that its pointless to try and save the star fish there are to many and he will never make a difference. The boy responds by picking up a star fish throwing it into the water and saying but I mad a world of difference for that one. We may not be able to save eveyone but for the once we do save it will have incredible meaning for them. Much like my situation now I can’t change my past but I can make Cerenity gets the bright future she deserves” Luna said with a smile. She thought for a long momen before speaking again. ” I don’t know about you captain but I refuse to give up. I joined star fleet because I believe no one should suffer the way I did. I know full well that I could not protect everyone in the Federation. It did not stop me. Ensign Loki Cerenity’s dad thought me that no mater how bad things get they can always get better” Luna said. She smiled at him a real smile the kind that could light up any room.

Cobb thought of the sands on his beloved Nantucket, of the swell of the ocean, the childhood delight of foraging in rock pools. And he thought of his fishtank, in the Jörmungandr Lounge, and of the colourful, sentient beings that swum in protected circles, blissfully unaware of the horrors that lay beyond their own walls.
“I like that story,” he nodded at last. “We do make a world of difference for each one that we save. And that, Miss Luna, is why we go on. It is why we charge in, again and again, against seemingly impassable foes. It is why we press forward, continuously, against seemingly insurmountable odds. And it is why, I believe, you were sent to the Leviathan. You belong in the ARU, Ensign. You need us. And we, just as surely, need you.”

” i dobut that, I’m here because your organization wants Cerenity. Why I still don’t understand. Just let you bosses know my child is off limits ill take anyone how comes after her down captain” she said calmly. Luna was a good security officer but she couldn’t turn on anyone if they harmed Cerenity.

So, after all of Cobb’s pledges and pleas, still the young woman refused to listen. And part of him understood - with the life of her child in the balance at every step, to lower her guard could prove the most costly mistake of all. But still, she had shunned the possibility of seclusion and so, if she was to operate amongst other beings, then she would be forced, eventually to achieve an equilibrium with them. No matter how fragile that might be.

“It seems you do not believe a word I have said,” Zachariah sighed, reaching for his whiskey and taking a long, steadying gulp. “And as a sentient being and also a mother, that is your prerogative. It is my hope that, over time, you will at least be willing to meet me halfway. Until then, there is little more that I can say or do to convince you.”

” some of it i don’t believe. Not all captain” Luna said.

His posture and tunic were straightened as one, the friendly old man immediately banished, replaced by an efficient and practical captain. “But as a member of my crew, Ensign Luna, you become part of a unified team. There is no room on the battlefield for suspicion or doubt, with an anomaly bearing down on you. It is imperative that your fellow officers find reason to depend on you. As you find the same reason to depend on them. If you are unable to do that then I’m sorry but, I can not assign you for combat. Now if that is also your choice then I accept it, there are plenty of administrative tasks to be done. But if your desire here is to stand alongside the RTF then these accusations, these suspicions, they end. Right now. Do I make myself clear, Ensign?”

Luna turned her head sideways. ” I would never endanger the loves of those on this ship captain did you not hear me. I will protect eveyone her just because I don’t trust them dose not mean I don’t care it also doesn’t mean that I’m unwilling to trust. I’m tired of being alone captain. So let’s make a deal captain I will try to give you the benefit of the doubt and trust you as long as you promise not to lie to me.” Luna said. She watched him carefully. Wondering what his response would be.

“I would never lie to my crew, Ensign Luna,” Cobb replied, extending a hand to shake on their deal, “although I can not say the same for all in the ARU and that, I am afraid, is a fact you will just have to learn to live with. But on this ship, amongst this crew, we enjoy a certain amount of…separation from ARU central command and we can, and indeed must, trust in each other.”

He got to his feet and offered Luna a genuine smile.
“I know it will take time, Ensign. It does for all who find themselves thrown into this strange and, at times, seemingly nonsensical world. But if you can let down your guard a little, if you can allow myself and your fellow crewmates the opportunity to prove ourselves to you, then I think both you and your daughter can find a home here.”

Luna shook the captains hand. ” I think she already has. Its hard to trust Captain but I can try” she said. Luna stood as well. ” Hopfuly you get to meet Cerenity soon sumthing tells me she will like you. Witch I would prefer that child seams to love scientists and doctors i share she dose it to drive me crazy” Luna said giggling at the thought of Cerenity posting ways to drive her up a wall. That would be something her child might do.
Ensign Luna

“I look forward to meeting her too, Ensign,” the captain replied. “Perhaps I can find some small tasks for her to occupy her mind and keep her out of trouble. But for now, you are dismissed, Ensign. And Luna,” he concluded as the woman prepared to leave, “welcome to the Leviathan.”

” Thank you I hope Cerenity doesn’t end up causing you to much trouble” Luna said with a smile. She then started and left. Shs she did so a fether fell from her wing. It was about the size of the captens hand and covered with black dots.
