Surda raised an eyebrow. “That is very generous DaiMon.” She showed the gem to Cerenity absently as she continued speaking. “I appreciate your trust. I’ll send some officers down next shift.”

Cerenity looked at the Gem it was pretty. She smiled at Lazol deciding she like him she reached back to her wings pulling a feather from it. Her wings were white with black spots but the feathers she held in her hand was pure white and fluffy it was a down feather and was clearly getting ready to drop anyway. Much like birds Luna and cerenity lost feathers and regrow them from time to time. She held it out to Lazol. ” I like you too Mr. lazol here for you, for some reason people like mine and mommy’s feathers,” she said.

She thought for a moment. ” I would avoid my mommy if I were you she doesn’t like scientists she’s afraid of them for some reason,” Cerenity said. After Lazol had the feather she turned and left with the COS.
Cerenity

Surda dipped her head slightly as she left with the child, knowing Lazol was likely accustomed to Orion gestures. She stopped outside the door and turned to Cerenity. “My name is Surda. I’m the Chief of Security here.” She hadn’t quite thought this through. She didn’t interact with children very often, mostly for lack of opportunity.

As the two left his labs Lazol pursed his lips and walked into his office. “Computer make a new security subroutine, call it the ‘Cerenity Protocol’, authorization Lazol Beta 4C.” The computer beeped that it had received the order and processed it for a moment before chiming again, indicating it was ready for the parameters. “This subroutine is to be isolated from the main computer and ran on all science decks constantly. I will be the only one allowed to make changes to the subroutine.” The computer-processed and beeped again ready for more, “While monitoring all bio-signs in science sections if the child enters any science section without my prior authorization activate force field containment bubble around the child, alert me immediately, and send a message of the child’s transgression to both Captain Cobb, and the child’s mother, an Ensign Luna I believe.” The computer beeped as Lazol finished speaking and then replied. “Subroutine created, activating now.”

Lazol, CSO

” so your mommy’s boss and I’m in trouble aren’t i. ” cerenity asked looking at her feet. She did know better but she rarely listened to her mother. ” Mommy is going to be angry. But I’m a big girl I can take care of myself it’s not fair that I have to stay in our quarter wail mommy gets to run around the ship” She said quietly. She stomped her little foot. ” it’s not fair everyone treats me like a little kid but I can do more than another three-year-old can!” She complained in frustration. It was hard being a smart three year old and that doesn’t even include the fact that she also had wings.
Cerenity

Surda tilted her head curiously and looked at the child. “You aren’t in trouble. If no one explains the rules, then how are you supposed to know what the rules are? That said, you know you aren’t allowed in the science labs without DaiMon Lazol’s permission now, so if you break that rule you will be in trouble.” How old had she said she was? Three? That was plenty old. “We have a lot of rules on the Leviathan, and some of those include who is allowed to go where. There are places I’m not allowed to go.” She had started training around three. “If we go up to my office I’ll teach you some science.” Botany was still science, right?

” actually mommy said I could not Leave are quarters by myself,” cerenity said dropping her head. ” mommy will be mad at me for not listening to her.” She added. Though at the mention of science cerenity perked right back up. She opened her wings jumped flapped her wings a few times then she was hovering at eye level with Surda. ” I love science mommy does not know much about science. She knows a lot about fighting. But she won’t teach me she is afraid ill get hurt” cerenity said quietly.
Cerenity

Surda nodded. “I know lots of different things. Maybe you can learn to fight when you’re older, but for now, I’ll teach you some botany.” She started walking to the turbolift, slower than usual, but she expected the child to follow.

Cerenity had no issues keeping up” Botany is the study of plants right” she said she thought for a moment. ” plants are interesting because they turn sunlight into energy using phot… Phat…photosynthesis” she said struggling with that word. ” a lot of them don’t have to eat anything except for ones like Veins flytrap they trap bugs in their pedals and digest them alive. That’s kinda scary. Do any plant like that exist that could eat an entire person?” Cerenity said.
Cerenity

“Botany is about plants. You know quite a bit already.” Surda was impressed with that. “There are some plants that try to eat people, but most of the time they end up only getting animals.” The two got into the turbolift and she took them to the security deck. “I got bitten by a plant once, but it was very small.” And venomous but that part wasn’t very important. “Photosynthesis is part of what makes plants green.” She was curious to see what Cerenity would do with that information and a green person standing next to her.

“Unlike your green color which is either meant to protect or help you camouflage back on your home planet. Where are you from? I’m from the Viking.” Cerenity said smiling up at the COS. Did you know that plant cells have cell walls?” She added after a minute.
Cerenity

Surda smiled. “I’m from a very old ship called the Heaven.” The name had always seemed pretentious to her, but it was designed to impress. “And after that, I moved to another ship, but the name of that one is a secret. But there is another secret I can tell you.” She paused to give it some weight, drawing on her years as an entertainer. “I’m green for the same reason the plants are.”

Cerenity giggled ” that not true animal cells don’t have chloroplasts that were the green color in plants come from, its the organelles that turns sunlight into food. If you need sunlight to live how could you live on a ship? Oh can I see what your cells look like? ” cerenity asked exactly. She was way too smart for her own good. But she was entertained.
Cerenity

Surda laughed. “Sure. I’ll make sure to point out the chloroplast just for you.” The turbolift doors opened onto the main security deck and Surda began walking towards her office. There was a quiet murmur of surprise as they passed some of her officers, but most ignored Surda’s tagalong. “I still eat and drink as you do, but I could use sunlight to fuel my body. It would take a lot of lying around in very bright light though.” She lead Cerenity into her office, looking at the walls for a moment. She trusted the girl not to mess around with her weapons, especially with the wall full of plants directly to her right.

Cerenity grabbed Surda’s sleeve. ” they are staring at me” cerenity said. She did not like this area of the ship. But quickly calmed down one the reached Surda’s office. Cerenity did know better than to touch the weapons but that did not mean she would not look at them. She hovered in front of the wall. ” what are they all used for. I took apart mommy’s phaser once and got into so much trouble. Mommy got into Trouble to” she said giggling.
Cerenity

Surda shook her head slightly. “They aren’t staring at you, they’re staring at us. I don’t normally lead children around the ship.” Most of the weapons she had were for close combat or were throwing weapons. “Taking apart phasers can be dangerous, especially when you’re trying to put them back together. Most of these are blades.” She reached out and picked up a tiny curved knife. The actual blade of the knife was minuscule, as it was more of a practice knife to get used to holding one. “This one you can hold as long as you hold it right.” Surda’s hands were too big for it, and they had been for around 20 years, but she still held onto it. “You wrap your hand around this part, and put your finger over the top.” She demonstrated although it felt a little awkward to hold. She then flipped it around and held it flat in the palm of her hand.

OOC: The described is an actual knife, and it is considered the safest “real” knife for children to hold. It’s also considered the best for untrained self-defense.

” ok” cerenity said. She carefully picked the Knife up like Surda showed. She smiled at it then at Surda. ” I want to be like mommy and daddy when I grow up. They protect everyone I want to protect people to” cerenity said before setting the knife back in its place on the wall. ” why did you decide to be a security officer.
Cerenity

Surda nodded approvingly at Cerenity’s form. “Well, I started training when I was very young, and I learned a lot about fighting.” She’d also learned about stealing, spying, entertaining, and assassination, but those weren’t kosher in the Federation. “Because I already knew how to fight, the Federation said if I wanted to join I was going to be in Security. So here I am.”

Cerenity blinked turning her head sideways. ” that’s not very fair. They should have let you chose they let everyone else in the Federation chose don’t they?” She asked confused.
Cerenity

“I came to the Federation as a criminal, Cerenity. I did my choosing when I ran away to come to Starfleet.” She gestured for the child to follow her over to the other wall, the one with shelves of plants.

” what exactly is that suppose to mean. Why does your past have to matter your part of the Federation now so you should have the right to choose.” Cerenity said follow Surda. She thought as they approached the walls. ” everyone deserves a second chance and the opportunity to make their dreams come true and be happy.” Cerenity said. There was a strange look on her face. She turned her attention to the plants before talking. ” so what is it that you actually want to do with your life?” Cerenity asked.
Cerenity

Surda smiled at Cerenity. “We all have to accept the consequences of our actions. There is a Goddess, Jaltrana, known as the Goddess of Protection. There is something we say when we talk to her that I have made a very important part of my life.” She paused for a moment to try to translate it out of Orion. “It is too late for you to be my savior, so take my hands and help me protect the rest.” She spoke comfortably, reciting the prayer she had learned as a child.

Cerenity seamed unimpeded she crossed her arms. “But you did pay for your crimes its not too late. That prayer is bogus every deserves to be saved an be happy. You still did not answer my question, Miss. Surda are you going to treat me like a baby too?” Cerenity said. She had gotten more than enough runaround from her mother to know this game. ” mommy doesn’t answer my questions ether? But I’m not a baby and I want to help and I can’t help if you won’t talk to me?” She said glaring at Surda.
Cerenity

Surda laughed. “Oh, I’ll be paying penance for years to come.” She had stopped doing bad things when she left, she had just started doing them for someone else. “You’re much too mature to be treated like a baby. I’ve just never thought about it.” She paused for a moment, then picked up a small rosemary plant. “One day, I’d like to have a student.” It was the highest honor to be entrusted with the education of the next generation, and it was considered the most valuable service any Orion could buy.

” a student?” Cerenity asked as she looked at the plant that Surda held. ” that’s rosemary right isn’t that the plant Giselle used in that ballet to lower young men to their death. I think mommy was interested in that story some months ago” she asked.
Cerenity

“It is rosemary. Good job.” She set the plant down on the floor then sat down behind it. “It’s one of the safer plants I own. It’s commonly used in cooking.” Cerenity’s mother should arrive soon. “It’s known for the smell.” She gestured for the girl to explore the plant. It was still small enough that the stems weren’t woody, but it had small purple flowers blooming on it.

Cerenity landed and looked at the plant. ” it did smell nice and it was pretty. But that was about all Cerenity picked up. ” what is your favorite flower?” Cerenity asked.

Surda pointed to a rather large plant with yellow flowers and delicate vines. “It’s called a sun stealer. The leaves fluff out and collect the light, then go back like that when it has enough energy.” It was another one of her harmless plants, mixed in with the deadly and dangerous she liked to keep around.

Cerenity looked at the plant. ” It’s pretty, I think I prefer cherry blossoms,” she said with a smile.

Luna was indeed on her way to the security office though she had gotten lost. =/\= Luna to Lutanat Surda, I’m on my way to your office I’m just a bit behind as I got lost ill be there in about 10 minutes=/\=.
Cerenity

The call went to the main security office instead, where the on-duty officer replied. =/\= NE Kovrin to Ensign Luna, I’ll tell Lt. Surda. You might want to study a map though.=/\= He then knocked on the door to Surda’s office, poking his head in. “Ensign Luna’s running late, ETA ten minutes.” Surda simply nodded to him, and he walked back out.

Luna arrived in about 9 minutes and was directed to the CO’S office by one of the security officers. She took a deep breath before knocking on the door.

Cerenity snickered. “Mommy doesn’t like doorbells the ones on the Viking made a horrible noise,” Cerenity said.
Ensign Luna

Surda smiled at Cerenity. “I was once on a ship where instead of knocking, you had to yell entry requested.” She was still sitting on the floor with a child, but she shrugged and raised her voice slightly. “Come in Ensign!” Surda looked forward to seeing her newest officer’s face when she saw her daughter already present.

Luna entered the room as she caught sight if cerenity she just kind of stared for a moment. ” cerenity” Luna said sternly. She glared at the girl now. ” what did you do” Luna said. Cerenity just stared at her mom. She did not answer.

Luna looked to Surda. ” I’m so sorry, I will try to keep this from happening again. Once she decides to tell me what she did ”

“There’s no problem. We had a brief talk on which decks are appropriate for Cerenity to visit.” She slipped the gem out of her pocket and held it out to Luna. “A gift to your daughter from DaiMon Lazol.” She glanced back to Cerenity and smiled. “Remarkably generous. She has quickly endeared herself, although I doubt she’ll be welcome without permission again.”

Luna picked up the gem. ” why would he do that? Wait, isn’t Daimon a Ferengi name?” Luna said turning her head sideways. He must have had a long enough conversation to realize that cerenity was not exactly normal.

“Yes he’s in charge of the scientists and he said that it’d a fire gem there a fire that only shows up in some kinds of light” cerenity said. Luna blinked. ” a scientist you were in the labs” Luna said.

“Yes I like science,” cerenity said. Luna just looked at cerenity and she quoted down quietly.

” Told you I was going to be in trouble” she said to Surda. Luna glared at the child. ” yes you in a lot of trouble i told you to stay in are qurters withe hologram and you disobeyed me.” Luna said coldly. Cerenity dropped her head. ” im sorry I just wanted to see the ship” she said.

Surda grinned and whispered to the child. “Try to bring a microscope next time you come down.”

Cerenity giggled. Luna smiled and shook her head. ” I did not expect my chief to be joining my daughter in mischief ” Luna said jokingly.

Luna shook her head. ” we will talk about this later” Luna said. She turned her attention back to Surda. ” I’m here to report for duty Ma’am,” she said trying to salvage the situation and not get kicked off the ship.
Ensign Luna

“I gathered Ensign. Consider yourself reported. Would you like to talk about yourself or your daughter first?” Surda stood up and walked to her desk, sitting down quietly. She gestured to the two chairs in front of her desk, one for Cerenity and one for Luna.

“What would you like to know,” Luna said as she took a seat and handed the gem to Cerenity. The child took a seat and turned the gem over in her hands looking at it. Luna was surprised that Cerenity was intent on it but at least she was quiet for the time being. ” I would be interested to learn more about you and how this department runs,” Luna said with a smile.
Ensign Luna

“Well, I consider it pretty standard. I organize shifts, assign patrol partners, etc. I also schedule training and meetings. Meetings are usually on the training holodeck.” She paused there to give Luna a chance to absorb that. “As for me, I was once an Orion pirate, but now I’ve been in Starfleet for eleven years. Questions?” Surda looked to both of them for an answer.

” there are still such things as pirates?” Cerenity asked looking up from her gem. This information nation did not seam to bother Luna. She nodded. ” I see, why did you change your mind?” Luna asked cerously.
Ensign Luna

“Yes, there are still pirates, although nowadays they are more like black market merchants than thieves.” Surda smiled at Luna. “As for me, teenagers are notoriously flighty. I decided being a commodity didn’t suit me.” She got the feeling the ensign could sympathize with that.

” that thats understandable I ran away as a teenager and joined star fleet.” Luna said leaving it vague on purpose. There were thinks they would need to take some descous that at some point. Luna smiled ” i am going to have to talk to lazol and thank him iv never seen her sit for more yhe 5 minute’s in one place.”Luna said
Ensign luna

“It would be wise to bring him something in return. It is a valuable gift and one that deserves recompense.” She had many years of experience as a merchant, and she held a certain level of respect for the Ferengi captain. “On another note she’s been in here for about 20 minutes. I daresay she could be entertained here for longer if you wish.” It was a roundabout way to offer herself as a babysitter of sorts, but she enjoyed the child’s presence. “We should probably plan out which places she’s allowed to go. Cerenity? Would you like to help us figure out some rules for what you’re allowed to do?” She included the girl with the expectation that Cerenity would be more likely to follow rules that she helped make.

” I have to agree with you on that. Unfortunately I have no clue what to give him we don’t really have much of value. I’m not even sure what these things ar worth. Any advice?” Luna asked. Cerenity chimed in ” I have him one of my fethers and he said he wanted to study me”

Luna just started at cerenity. She did what? Gave him one of her… well he was bound to get ahold of one of a fether from ether of them eventually the pair dropped fethers like crazy. Cerenity idea however was out. ” Absolutely not i may just have to talk to him and see what he likes? I sapose i could invite him to join us for dinner he could not be much of a threat right1” Luna said thoughtfully.

“The DaiMon is much more scientific than most Ferengi. I believe he would be content with the opportunity to see frequent returns on his investment.” She got the feeling that he enjoyed teaching as much as she did.

” thats what consurns me, if he wants to spend time with her i need to know i can trust him first” Luna said.

Cerenity accepted her moms decision and turned her attention to Surda. ” can you teach me how to fight like mommy” she said smiling.

” Absolutely no cerenity you to yung and small” Luna said. Cerenity glared her her mom dropped from the ground opened her wings and stomped her foot. ” im not a baby stop treating me like one” she snaped. Luna over her mouth trying to hide her grin. She could not help it the outburst was adorable. Cerenity glared at her mom. Luna quickly reganed her composer self. ” it appears there no shortage of individuals how like Cerenity.” Luna joked then got serious. ” the consuler and I have plans to set atime time for her to spend on the consulting deck with Gen she is aperently another child onbord the ship.” Luna said.

“We don’t get children often. They are… precious in most cultures, and many of us are predisposed towards protection.” She had heard of a study that said individuals with inadequate childhoods were drawn towards children. She could believe it.

” wail you may be right ther are still dangerous people on this ship” Luna said gently. It was clear Luna had some trust issues.

” but I want to spend time here and with Lazol too” cerenity said. Luna looked at the child. ” I don’t know about Mr. Lazol but but I don’t mind you spending time with LT Surda when she has time and would like to.” Luna said. She turned smiling at Surda. ” I assume you will respect my decision before her not to learn how to fight” Luna asked.
Ensign Luna

“It is your decision.” Privately, she didn’t think Cerenity was too young to learn, but that was likely a cultural disconnect. Surda turned her attention to Cerenity and smiled. “There are many other things I can teach you.” She turned back towards Luna. “As long as she avoids the armory and the brig, there isn’t anything overly dangerous on this deck. I wouldn’t suggest that you take her on patrols with you, but you can drop her off here before your shift.” She had made a promise to herself that she would be available at all times for any of her officers, but that often meant sitting in her office not doing much. She would welcome the child in. “On Orion ships, the equivalent of a department head assumes responsibility for everyone under them, even assuming guardianship for those under the age of maturity. It is not so in Starfleet, but I have carried the habit over. You can come to me for anything. The NE at the desk will know if I’m absent or unreachable, but most of the time I am here.”

” thank you your very kind if I do bring cereal in ill let you know in advance.” Lunas said with a smile then as if for both Surda and cerenity sake she added. ” I don’t want cerenity to learn how to fight because she has hollow and easily broken bones.” Luna said. Cerenity confused to glare at her mom. Luna ignored this. ” Orion ship’s have an interesting philosophy. How do you like being stationed here?” Luna asked.
Ensign Luna

Surda tilted her head while she thought. “It is very different. If you are on an Orion ship, you were raised on it, traded onto it, or you have a family member on it. There are no official ranks, although respect is very important. I enjoy Starfleet, if only because it is the life I chose.”
