“In Ops, I had to change who I was. My background, hobbies, hangouts, everything. Also my name. I kept Juliet because being the last of my family, I figured I needed to hold on to something. So I changed my last name.” She glanced sideways a moment back straight ahead. She’d never told a soul that her last name wasn’t real. It was made up. Made to aid in the new persona she’d created almost 5 years ago.
Juliet “somethingorother”
(Call me Jewels for short)Surda paused to evaluate what she knew of human culture. “I’m not sure I understand the significance. It’s not as common in the Federation, but Orions regularly change their name and become a new person.” She spoke slowly, thinking about it. “You changed yourself for a job, so there is no reason you cannot change yourself back if you want to.” Surda’s voice lowered, becoming more solemn. “We change every day. Sometimes it is more drastic. You can change to reflect that as well.”
-Surda, CoSJuliet shook her head. “No reason to change back. If anything, I’ll change forward in the future. Maybe lose Juliet, altogether.” She laughed a the thought that crossed her mind. “Though hard to lose someone who’s been gone a while. Honestly, I don’t know who I am, anymore. Maybe being here,” she absently gestured to the ship, “I’ll figure out out.” She smiled slightly and shrugged. “Who knows… maybe I’ll find some alien term for I exist and just name myself that.”
Realizing she hadn’t really answered the earlier comment, she backtracked a bit. “Humans, in general, don’t change their names except for specific reasons. Some change their last name to their spouses name when they’re married. And in my case, some change their name so they can’t be found. Though since no one’s looking, it was probably a moot point.”
She wasn’t ready to admit she was Betazoid yet. Too early for that. But something told her Surda would probably know soon enough. One way or another.

Sec/ RTFSurda nodded. Names were an interesting cultural difference and one she hadn’t anticipated when she ran away. “Well, in any case, we are now on the training holodeck. Most meetings I call will be here. It’s also open for your use, whenever you just want to practice.” She debated asking about something that she had noticed almost immediately, then made up her mind. “As you know, I personally assign partners, rotations, shifts, even duty locations. That means I like to know about all the capabilities, and limits of all my officers.” She paused. “And that means I’d like to know what else you are, other than human.” It would trick just about anyone, even Orions who hadn’t spent most of their time around Humans. However, Starfleet was still a majority human organization, so she knew the scent well.
-Surda, CoS (Kinda taking a risk here, but she’s just gonna go with it.)A single blink was the only give on Juliet’s face at the query. “I don’t know what you mean. I’m an excellent sharp shooter and more than fair at hand to hand. And I can usually move around without being caught if the need arises. Was that what you were asking?” She looked at the woman a moment longer then glanced around the holodeck. With the programs off, the grid lines were all she had to look at. But it gave her an idea of the size of the room so when she ran her own simulations, she would know what her boundaries were.

Sec/RTFSurda raised an eyebrow. “Certain species have certain traits. Orions have an extra gland that exudes pheromones. We also have the accompanying olfactory sense. Personally, I have nearly twenty years of experience. I like to think I’m pretty good at connecting dots.” She looked Juliet up and down. “That said, clearly it’s some sort of state secret or something, so I’ll drop it.” She shifted her weight slightly, making herself seem more serious. “That said, if there’s something you can do when no one else in your group can do it, I hope you’ll do it, even if we have to fudge the report a little.”
-Surda, CoSJuliet turned to glance around the blank room again as if suddenly it was the most interesting thing in the cosmos. After taking a deep breath, she turned back to Surda. “I’m half Betazed. And I can read thoughts if they are surface, and emotions as well. And I’m a telepath.” She knew telling the CoS was taking a risk, but if this woman was going to be watching her back out there, she deserved the honesty. And as she mentioned, sometimes a report may have to be fudged. She deserved to know why. “The eyes have been surgically changed because the black eyes were a dead giveaway. The CO and the Doc are the only other ones who know. Unless Ops or the Captain deems it otherwise, I’d prefer it stayed that way. Though,” she glanced at her feet a moment then looked back up, “I imagine the head of the RTF ought to know as well, I’m guessing. And I’ll let the Captain know my decision to tell you both and take whatever flak comes from that.”
While it should have felt like a burden was lifted from her shoulders, it was just the opposite. The more people who knew, she figured, the more were in jeopardy. Whether that was true, or not, she didn’t know. But it was a thought she’d always had since making the choice to appear Human.
Juliet
Sec/RTFSurda nodded, unsurprised. She could have figured it out in time, but it was better to hear it straight from Juliet. “If the Captain has a problem with it, he can talk to me. I’m sure I can come up with an exercise on the importance of knowing your teammate’s abilities and schedule command staff for it. If you want to tell Captain Manhattan about it feel free, but you can always just have me send a message.” That said it was time for her final test. “That said, you now get to prove you know where the security offices are from the holodeck. They’re the two places you’ll visit most consistently, so I like to make sure folks won’t get lost.”
-Surda, CoSJuliet shook her head. “I’ll tell him. I need to check in with him, anyway. I know it’s not usual, but apparently given the circumstances, he’s one of the ones on my check in list. Just prefer doing him last. That way I can answer all the ‘have you talked to so and so and done such and such?’ questions with affirmative answers.” She laughed and exhaled a breath of relief. “I’m actually glad you know. I never saw a good reason why you weren’t on the access list to begin with. You would think my supervisor should be aware of the skills I bring to the table. But I guess they worry about who all to trust beyond ‘necessary’ personnel. I’ll let the Captain and Doc know you are aware, as well. So they know if something happens, that you can be in the loop.”
She frowned a moment. “I know getting us back to Security is my test, but on the way, I’m going to telepath with you a bit. I’m giving you warning because some see it as a personal breach and I don’t want you to think I’m poking where I shouldn’t. But you should know what I feel like in your head in case things go sideways at some point. And I also do it to be familiar with you as well. That way I can always reach for where you are. If that’s all right with you, I mean.” She turned back the direction they came and started back to security. Thankfully, between studying the ship prior to arrival and her memory notes on the way to the holodeck, she knew she’d have no trouble getting them back. It was one of the things she always thought security should know, how to get around their ship, even with distracted with talking.

Sec/RTFSurda nodded. “Way to take initiative.” She began following Juliet, allowing her mind to wander in the silence. She didn’t particularly have mental defenses beyond her own stubbornness, but she could invite people in. She remembered the odd feeling she got of someone settled in her mind from when she was a Starfleet spy. Her handler had been Betazoid, in charge of relaying information through her so she wouldn’t meet with anyone suspicious. It had helped her cover but it had always felt strange.
-Surda, CoSAs they headed back a warmth would slowly settle in Surda’s mind. Like the feeling of coming in from a cold place and being heated once more. I am here would be the soft whisper. Like hearing someone down a hallway you couldn’t see. It was soft, and low. Can you hear me? Just think your answer. I will know it. She didn’t glance to Surda, for two reasons. One, she didn’t want to give away she was there in the woman’s head, in case she didn’t hear her. And the other reason being, she didn’t want to see the look on her supervisor’s face. She often saw the surprise and shock when she was in someone’s mind the first time. It still unnerved her, even after all these years.

Surda smiled slightly. No Knock Knock, Who’s there? If Juliet had turned around she wouldn’t see much of a difference except a faint flicker of amusement when she made her joke. Reminds me of the good old days. She made the comment absently, but she remembered the things she had done for a moment, then pushed them away. That wasn’t the sort of thing she’d show anyone really.
