Casela liked his hand shake. It was an old axiom but true that a lot could be surmised by a person’s hand shake. “Not at all dr. We are here for when we are needed. There are always open appointments.” Casela looked at the plant, curious as to what scent it would exude for her, but was not easily distracted. “Thank you Dr. If it works well I will have to see if someone in the science department can grow me one for each room on the deck.” She also wondered if it was a dig at the fact she hadn’t been to sickbay since Fey operated on her.
“What do you think, Doctor, of our little ship of horrors?”
Theo smiled. “I am finding the modifications to the ship extremely interesting. The mission profile itself also. And from what I can see so far the crew seem all very competent. I’m sure there’s much more exciting times to come and I look forward to see what this may mean for me.”
Dr Knox
Casela raised that brow again. “Our previous doctor was a bit of a mad scientist type. Absolutely brilliant, mind you, but she did tend to make the crew nervous. You’ll have to contend with that. And her last little encounter with the Bloody Mary anomaly hasn’t helped that. I would suggest you get to know Cmdr McHarrie. He is medical and under certain normal circumstances works under you. But he is also in charge of Sickbay Beta, which is for Anomalies only. That is his domain, along with his lab. When it comes to Anomalies he is in charge. All that to say you are both expert doctors and I hope will be able to work together when necessary.” Casela leaned back, propped her feet on the corner of her desk. “So tell me Dr how did you come to end up on Leviathan? And don’t worry about clearance, I can show you my credentials if you require them.”
Lt. Synthi-er, CNSTheo nodded. ”I will of course do my best to ensure that the crew are as at ease as possible. As for Commander McHarrie, i look forward to working with him as much as possible over the course of this posting.”
Considering her Theo smiled again. ”Forgive me but it is an indulgence to be able to speak freely with someone. Showing me your credentials will not be necessary.” he thought a moment ”After the war ended I remained with a branch of star fleet research and development. I say My experiments came to a natural conclusion, that isn’t strictly true. I found myself growing restless and when I discussed this with my commanding officer it was she who suggested that a return to ship duty would be a good avenue to pursue. I was lucky enough that my position and happenstance afforded me the opportunity to join you here. As to why here of all ships when the danger Is almost certain well…i believe it was Thomas Harris, an old earth author who said ’In the vaults of our hearts and brains, danger waits.’ Perhaps I can best explain it in that I wanted the challenge and chance to help ensure the continued safety of the crew here.”
Dr Knox
Casela nodded. “You’ll have no shortage of work for you here, doctor. Injuries from anomalies are quite frequent. Injuries and illness from over indulging in stress relief is common as well. And let’s not forget combat training. Drink, heavy drink, real drink, not synthehol is another past time that is common. But there are good people here. I hope that you and I will be able to work together seemlessly as well. My staff are all trained as either medics or nurses for when you need them. None are cleared to work in Beta sickbay with the anomalies, but they are good people. And we have several patient rooms here on our deck.” She stares off for a moment. “It is not an easy position you find yourself in. Our orders from command often require that we put the safety of the anomalies over our own crew. And that doesn’t sit right with anyone and that means greater risk, injury, and loss to our crew.”
Lt. Synthi-er, CNSTheo nodded. “I understand, it is a lot to take in for many.” He said nodding, his expression stoic. He considered her as he sat. “I am no stranger to difficult decisions.”
Dr Knox
Casela appraised him with a look. “No I would say you are not. So tell me doctor, how strongly do you believe in the Hippocratic oath?” She could say that Fey had followed it, to a point. The procedure had not hurt Casela, so far, but the psychological harm bothered her. Casela had a let up on that though, she’d understood how Fey’s actions had triggered past trauma. Casela had worked through it as best as she could, and she would admit she had avoided sickbay since. Fey may have meant well, and Casela didn’t bare her any ill will, now, but she had no desire to be further experimented on. She still stood by her assessment though that Fey was an excellent doctor even if her methods were not always orthodox.
“Would you like something Dr Knox?” Casela got up and went to her replicator to get the second cup of coffee since this meeting began. The doctor would notice slight bruising on her arms and dark circles under her eyes, and compared to her personnel photo she seemed paler.
Lt. Synthi-er, CNS
Theodore raised one eyebrow a fraction, so minute a gesture that to most it would be undetectable. He had a feeling that Casela however would notice. “Tea would be very welcome, thank you.” He said responding to her replicator question first.
He watched her move to the replicator as one who issued to observing and noting behaviours. Or perhaps as a velocirapor does before it strikes. Either way he responded to her first question. “The oath is a corner stone to medical practice. It is the basic binding of what we do, treat the sick and injured to the best of one’s ability and teach the knowledge and practice of medicine to the next generation. However it is outdated and unable to entirely cover all of the potential ethical dilemas one might find ones self in today as a practicing pphysician.i doubt very much that Hippocratese ever assumed the human race would venture into the stars and encounter such wonders and also such evils as we have.”
He paused to give her a small smile. “I always perfered another old earth text to be my guiding code. “Do unto others as you would have them do to you.””
His expression formed into one of mild concern then. “Forgive me Counsellor, but if I appear rude but the bruises on your arms…are those new?”
