Icarus strolled to the front of the cabin and took a seat behind Bog. “Since y’all are going with secret identities, you can refer to me as Pinkerton, Mr.Pinkerton, security specialist, hired gun, bodyguard. . . . they all work.”

“All those would work. What little security is on Delotha, they would probably be relieved that Zanya has a bodyguard. She’s can’t tell what end of a phaser fires and has no sense of self preservation. However they will just send you back to her if you wander off. Probably go with one of the other two.” Casela wasn’t looking at any of them, and she was aware of how odd that description sounded. Internally she was looking forward to watching them observe ‘Zanya’ and her lack of self preservation. Though with any luck there wouldn’t be a need for that this trip. She’d talk to the children, they’d find out where this anomaly was, if there was one, contain it and get out. “And yes, we’re going to alternate identities. The last thing the people of this colony needs is someone to get wind of star fleet hanging around and come asking questions.”

He watched the stars pass by in silence for a short while before speaking again. “Y’know Cas, you’re really good at playing the hard-ass, but you’ve let this ice-cold facade slide just a bit. It’s the kids, the innocent ones that make you crack.”

What was it with the men on this crew? ‘Cas’ why did they all call her ‘Cas’? Cobb she put up with. It made him more relaxed around her. Ryder she put up with, well that was personal. But the rest of the crew, it just irritated her. “Casela,” she corrected quietly. Casela lowered her feet back to the floor and turned in her chair to regard Remington. Her half grin somewhere between half humored or wicked. One never knew. “Oh you think you’ve figured me out, then. That’s so cute!” Her voice sounding positively proud of him. She turned back to the console as something flashed, she corrected the course subtly and turned back. “Ice-cold? You keep coming up with all these new adjectives to describe me. I have been called reckless and most often hot-headed, but never ice-cold. I’ll add that one to my growing list.” She leaned back in the seat relaxed. She certainly wasn’t mad at him. She honestly was not surprised it was Remington who broached the subject first. But was that the point? Everyone had something that drove them. For him it was his parents. And she would be all kinds of stupid to deny it. And Casela was many many things, but stupid was not one of them.

“Now, before you get defensive on me, that’s not an insult, not a bad thing. I understand where you’re coming from, having been orphaned myself. As a kid, it’s nice to know there’s someone out there looking out for you. It’s a comfort knowing that you might have your own guardian angel watching over you. . . .”

Remington (CIO)

She raised a brow, “Is there a question there? Are you asking me if I’m their guardian angel? Are you asking me how I know about this place or my connection? Spit it out. All of you. You’re on this mission too. If you want to know, you have to ask.”
Lt. Synthi-er

“Nope, Counselor. I trust you to keep me in the loop, where that trust ends is when it comes to you keeping yourself safe. Why in the Kovian hells do you think I build Huey?

Casela rolled her eyes, and then at a flashing from the panel again, she turned her chair and corrected the flight path again. “Alfred, if you change my flight plan one. more. time. Shorter does not mean Safer. Leave. it. alone.” She glares at Bog, “I don’t like arguing with a computer, Bog. Fix it.” Then she turned back to Remington giving him her full attention.
Lt Synthi-er, CNS (Zanya)

“Perhaps using Cobb’s AI as a model may have been presumptuous, Counselor. Huey seams to have a will of his own, but seeing you stay alive is his prime directive. I suspect he has a good reason.” Bog suppressed a smile, he was pleased with Huey.

Bog

Casela sat forward very slowly in the seat. “Bog, my dear Tellek, if you want your little HUEY program to keep me safe, it needs to stop countermanding me. I understand that the asteroid belt looks super scary to him, but it’s a lot better than crossing the middle of an Orion Syndicate trading route. I’ve flown this route at least twice every year for over a decade. Now if you want Valkyrja to look like she did the first time you met her, then by all means let’s go visit the Syndicate. Otherwise,” and her voice got hard and icy cold, “fix him.” She was rather proud of the work Bog had done but she didn’t need the HUEY making stupid mistakes.

Icarus just shook his head at the AI’s response before shifting his gaze back to the CNS. “Well? It’s time for truth or dare. I get it. . . you wanting to help orphans. I’d do the same thing. That’s why I agreed to help, but these kids, this place. . . .there’s more than just helping kids going on here.”

Remington (CIO)

Remington knew what he wanted to ask, he knew how to get answers; he wouldn’t be on the Levi otherwise, but he was beating around the bush about it. Why? Respect? Wanting to see how far the ice woman had cracked? Casela shrugged, it didn’t matter. There were somethings she could tell them, and some not. And some…would raise questions she wouldn’t answer. “Truth or dare? Sounds like a teenage slumber party. And the shuttle isn’t big enough for dare, so I choose truth.” She glanced at the console to make sure they were still on course and that Alfred hadn’t changed it, again. “Yes, Icarus there is more going on there. If it was a matter of just helping some kids, I’d take leave and come alone. Like I always do. But something sinister is going on. Maybe humanoid in nature, but bringing the dead back to life,” she shrugs, “sounds like an anomaly to me.”

This peaked Raauhl’s interest, he shifted his body weight so he could see what was going on and make out who was talking. He had agreed to help because well it was Casela and he wasn’t going to say no to her especially when this mission meant a lot to her.

Seeing him move Casela cast her glance over at Ryder. But she addressed them all, giving Remington the ‘more’ he was looking for, “Delotha was once a huge mining colony. The mines closed down about 15 years ago. There were other locations, but the governor had been making a lot of money off the ore and didn’t want to waste time on starting a new mine. As it happens with power and wealth, he didn’t want to listen. The miners knew the mine was running dry, but instead of scouting for new locations, the governor wanted to get as much as he could out of the mine. When it ran dry…he found other means of making his wealth.” Casela got up and walked back to the replicator, she paused right in front of Ryder, for his ears only. “It was my first assignment after Mad Man.” She got a glass of water and moved back to her seat, looking back at Remington, but the story for all of them. “My assignment, my team, was to find out where his wealth was coming from. We did, and then I stopped it.” She’d done more than stop it though.

“The oldest orphans that you will meet…their parents died working for the governor. He kept the children to motivate the parents to work. The children were locked in the abandoned mine if their parents died. There are four of them still in the orphanage. The rest,” she pauses, how much to say…”came from all across the quadrant.”

A holographic display depicting the asteroid field, revolving then laying up historical overlays of the trips the shuttle had made and the changes recently artificially wrought in the field. “I perceive an unexplained change in the field Mistress Casela. Asteroid mining dose not appear to fit nor natural drift. I suspect a large object has entered the field, but stellar cartography doesn’t show any likely explanations.”
Huey

Bog swung around in his chair and began looking over the data. “Uh, you need to look close at this. It was big and the gravidics would suggest it’s still there.” The disruption showed an object probably twice the size of the Leviathan.
Bog

Casela looked over at it, tapped a couple of controls and then shrugged, “It’s always there. By the time we get there the belt will have rotated enough that we won’t be near it. We will pass through here,” she points to a section of the belt that is not as densely populated. “If you are concerned, we can tell Levi about it when we get back.”
