Theodore sat. ”Thank you.” he said at the invitation and listened. ”I was thankful for the change. My research has hit something of a plateau in recent years following the war. The change of pace may be just the ticket.” He frowned slightly it didn’t say much more on the one or two places comment, saying instead. “I have yet to have the pleasure of meeting the Doctor, but I look forward to working with her.”

Dr Knox

“Oh, you will soon enough,” Cobb replied, before adding somewhat cryptically, “she has a tendency to pop up when you are least expecting it. Almost as if she is in wait around every corner.”
The laugh that followed spread no higher than his lips.

Theodore smiled politely as he considered the mans words. ”I find Doctors often do that.” he said placidly.

“Anyway,” the captain cleared his throat, as if, in doing so, he could momentarily drive all thoughts of Fey Kastil from his mind. “My own experience with the ARU thus far, limited thought it may still be, tells me that nobody is assigned to one of their vessels accidentally. It is a singular line of work that we find ourselves in here, Mr Knox. I wonder, why do you suspect you were chosen for this position? And what experience do you have of the things we are involved with here?”

  • Captain Zachariah Cobb

OOC: Bump for when Calé gets back :)

Again the smile, ”I would imagine I was chosen for the position sir, because I asked for it.” he said. ”I have spent too long at star fleet research and development. The war is well and truly over and My experiments there have come to a natural end you might say and I find myself yearning for a challenge and a new area to explore.”

He sipped his drink. ”Indeed, when such an opportunity presented itself I could hardly refuse.”

Dr Knox

“I see,” Cobb replied.

Steepling his fingers beneath his chin, the old man reclined and fixed the Doctor with an intense gaze - the kind usually reserved for an engineering conundrum or efficiently encrypted and top-secret communique. Theodore Knox, it seemed, was an enigma. And one that had no intention of contributing easily to his own solution. Zachariah would have to try a different approach. Enough with the faux-pleasantries. It was time to demand answers.

“Tell me more about your experiments,” he requested, the consecutive sipping of his drink an attempt to soften the blow.

  • Captain Zachariah Cobb

Theodore smiled calmly. ”Im afraid sir that I can’t discuss anything further regarding that unless you have the correct clearance. You were part of the war, I’m sure you can understand the need for such documentation to be classified” he sipped his drink and watched the man, dark yes over the rim of the glass. ”I have however been working with some genetic materials and reanimation of limbs for those who suffered amputation.” he sipped. ”Bio-synthetic of course.” he added with a small laugh.

Dr Knox

“Aye, of course,” Cobb replied, although internally he was seething. Damn the ARU for sending him these reticent, self-important, blowhards! As if the mysteries of McHarrie’s and Nakuto’s laboratories weren’t already sufficient to deny his mind of sleep most evenings, but now he’d have to start wondering on the nature of the medical labs as well?

“Well, it’s of no consequence to me, of course,” the captain added, testily, as he sipped at his drink. “As long as you keep my crew healthy and provide medical assistance in containment where needed, then you can get up to whatever the bloody hell pleases you in your own labs. As long,” he sat forward and locked eyes with the Medical Chief, “as what is inside your lab stays inside your lab. We’ve had enough trouble recently with anomalies escaping and running rampage throughout the ship!”

Zachariah sighed and ran a hand through his long hair. Clearly the memory of this last escape weighed heavily on him still.

Theo watched him with interest and fixed a look of concern on his face. ”I wouldn’t dream of adding any issues to your already stressful situation Captain. But please be assured I will do everything in my power to ensure that your crew is healthy and cared for medically when needed.”

“So, do you have any questions for me?” he asked, before adding to himself, or is it irrelevant to you what the bloody captain of this ship thinks about anything, eh?

  • Captain Zachariah Cobb

”Only a million.” he chuckled. ” You of course will always be welcome to come tour the medical labs any time you wish.” he smiled. “After all it is your ship! I’m just the keeper of the medical supplies.” He sipped from his drink.

“The ship presents a challenge medically, many different species and potential accidents. I’d be interested to hear your take or concerns on that situation.”

Dr Knox

“And I will be sure to take you up on that offer once you have your experiments up and running,” the captain accepted gleefully. He had learned very quickly to never pass up a peek into the hidden and restricted places on this ship.

“As for my take on the ship’s medical challenges,” he supped at his own drink with far less decorum than his companion, “that, my dear Doctor, is what the ARU pays you for. My own professional involvement ends at the clearing of one, such as yourself, for the role. Or maybe not clearing, as the case may sometimes be,” he winked. “Of course, as the captain of this vessel I stand by to provide assistance or guidance to all of my crew, yourself included. But just as I would not look to you for strategic direction in battle, so you would be wise not to ask me the difference between a sprained ankle and a broken leg.”

Theo smiled slightly as he listened to Cobb speak.

Cobb paused and studied Theodore intently once again. On the surface the man seemed perfectly amicable. Pleasant, even, at that. Perhaps his own immersion in this curious world of anomalies had led him to see monsters lurking in the depths of every soul? No, in truth Zachariah had harboured such refined misanthropy long before the ARU ever turned up at his door.

“I would be interested in your take on the subject though,” he reflected the question back to its asker. “I would imagine for many of the research staff here it might sometimes feel as if they are pulled in different directions - protection of the crew to the left and preservation of anomalies to the right. I am fortunate that no such dichotomy haunts me - I would give my life for the men and women onboard this starship. And I would give your life if you ever appear to forget that.”

  • Captain Zachariah Cobb

The man thought a moment and seemed to choose his words carefully. “I believe there is much challenge on a ship such as yours, many different species and hidden dangers lurking around every corner. But i was never one to back away from a challenge. I simply meant that I’d love to one day hear your take on any concerns or areas of the crews health that may bother you Captain.” He considered Cobb. “ Or perhaps of your own health.” He added with a smile.

He nodded at the last comment.” Spoken like a true leader sir, i would expect nothing less.”
