That day had been long and never ending, but Casela had some very special ‘reports’ to go over. These were always the hardest, but the ones she never put off and always gave her full attention, despite anything else that was going on.

The first thing she examined was the growing application file. Casela was impressed by the detail of exploitation Ashlyn had managed to bring to light and the solution. Casela wasn’t a computer programer but she was able to exploit weaknesses, both human and machine with ease. She saw the beauty of the solution and the ruthlessness of the infiltration Ashlyn had managed. Her scores in information security and her innovative approaches would make any department, ship, base, or otherwise fight over her. The next thing she saw was the letter between her and a medical officer named Sharah Fayth. But the letters suddenly stopped because it was deemed that this friendship with the medical officer was a negative influence to Ashlyn.

That made Casela pause and began an in-depth investigation to this doctor. After extensive snooping around Casela found nothing to warrant such an accusation on either this doctor’s part or Ashyln’s. As a therapist Casela could see how Ashlyn had finally created a new attachment to someone and her sudden removal had sent her spiraling. Instead of helping her, she was blamed. As both a mental health expert and so attached to Ashlyn, Casela was disappointed. Not in Ashlyn but in the care she had not received over the years. There was nothing Casela could do about that though.

At the same time she was denied the opportunity to continue working a physical exercise program that she had written. She was even instructing others, but an incident with…AH! Casela saw now, and entitled brat with too much brass in her family. Such as politics worked. But Ashlyn, until then, was showing great leadership skills, at least in areas she had interest. She was working well with the other security personnel and had even done some unofficial mentorship during her cadet tour. Rough around the edges, but the other cadet had improved greatly. But her career was being impeded because she was a misfit. And there was no better place for a misfit than on Leviathan. Now she just needed to get Cobb and Raauhl to agree to it. To let her pay off this penance, or at least make the attempt. She compiled all the information she had found into a personnel report to give to them.

To: Captain Cobb
From: Lt. Synthi-er
Could you please meet me in the holodeck at 1400?

The other she sent personally off the record so to speak.
I have a personnel request to make, but it’s personal. I know you are in charge of personnel transfers and requests, but I don’t want to cross that line. I’ve asked the captain to meet me on the holodeck at 1400. It was a fine line they walked and she didn’t want to cross it. She didn’t care about her career, but she did his. This way he would know she wasn’t maliciously going over his head, but he could choose to show up or not based on what he thought was best.
Lt. Synthi-er, CNS

He had been most unsure of what to expect, and therefore how to dress, for this holodeck meeting. Should he come prepared for a rousing bar fight, where skirmishes and scotch would be offered in equal measure? Or fill his pockets with marshmallows at the anticipation of another soaring campfire? With no further clues to guide him, in the end he settled for barely switching from his duty uniform, a black woolen jacket in place of his usual tunic the only noticeable concession. Then, armed with an almost-full bottle, he proceeded to the holodeck and, with an anticipatory breath, stepped inside…

Upon entering the holodeck the command officers would simply see the black and gold grid of the holodeck. Casela stood in front of a holographic image of a human woman wearing a gold security uniform of the rank of ensign. Appx 1.524 m in height and 50kg and 26 years old. She has brunette hair cut to a stacked bob and brown gold flecked eyes.

Casela hands them a PaDD with her current record, but the name removed.

Casela turned to look at them. “She’s a bit of a misfit, but who isn’t on this bird. Would you take her?” The question obviously holding more meaning than it appears.
Lt Synthi-er, CNS

Cobb took the offered PADD and studied it with single-minded focus, those sharp, cerulean eyes scrutinising each word in turn. There was a classic stereotype reliably invoked by the words “Starfleet Security” - that of a strong, brave, confident fighter. And most certainly those individuals were invaluable to any starship and its crew. But as a former engineer, Cobb had often worked alongside a different branch of security, one whose purpose was equally essential on a vessel given over to computerised control. Digital security. And as he continued to read the reports at his fingers, Zachariah got the feeling that they were describing an excellent security officer and one whom not only understood the standard measures and tests required on starfleet systems, but also had some innovative ideas for improvements up her sleeve. On paper, she seemed like an ideal candidate for the Leviathan. Which, to his suspicious mind begged the question, what was the catch?

Handing the PADD back to Casela, the captain nodded. “She’s certainly impressive and could be put to good use on the containment deck, of that I have no doubt. Of course, I’d have to clear it with Roebuck first, but I can’t see him fielding any objections. Unless there’s more to this one than what’s being handed to me?”

The formalities of captain and counselor dismissed, he laughed dryly and added, “Come on, Cas. What’s the real story with this one, eh?”
