IC:
It was a slow shift for Casela that morning. Sandman had wrecked havoc on the crew. Many were still in mourning for Blair, Potter, and Eugene. And many of the away team were still suffering the effects of the psychic trauma including herself. The Betazoid paracortex and had a remarkable ability to heal itself. Casela wasn’t sure that was going to happen this time. The lull in today’s appointments allowed Caseal to sit down and really read the reports that were coming in from her contacts. Most of it was mundane. Accounts of traders and ‘businessmen’ that had been through the areas. Accounts of how economics were progressing, the ecological health of towns. Evaluations of policing forces and whether or not they were morale people. Occasionally Casela would smile as the reports would provide amusing stories about some of the people. It was all routine and simple, but she kept up with them all. Some of the reports were over a month old, having to take back channels to get routed to her. She got up for her 6th cup of coffee that day and returned to her desk. The last report had a strange tone to the writing. Which wasn’t normal. This report was always guaranteed to make her laugh. She continued reading to the end. Then setting down her cup she leaned forward, closer to the screen and read it again. She sat back contemplating it. After a moment she downloaded the message to a PaDD. She deleted the other transmissions. Let Hampton chew on that for awhile. More secret messages to the evil Counselor. She laughed and headed out the door.
“Watkins, I’ll be on the bridge. I’ll be back later. Page me if you need me.” Watkins nodded from her office as Casela left. She took the turbolift up to the CIC and looked around the bridge and seeing Cobb in his seat she nodded to him. “Cpt. I need to speak to you in your ready room.”
Lt. Synthi-er, CNSCobb hated quiet days like this, when the clicks and chirps of terminals and the quiet chatter of surrounding officers was insufficient to drown out his own, miserable thoughts. So the sight of the Counselor on the bridge was nothing short of a blessing. With an eagerness that he made no effort to hide, Zachariah leaped out of his chair with an “Aye, lass”, followed quickly over his shoulder, almost an afterthought, with, “McReady, you have the conn.”
And with that they entered his ready room, the captain not caring on the nature of the distraction but curious enough to ask all the same. “So, to what do I owe this unexpected pleasure then, Cas?”
- Captain Zachariah Cobb
The slight smile that usually crossed Casela’s face these days at the nick name did not appear. Rather she looked more like the woman who had first come aboard: focused, purposeful, and serious. Not one to mince words, Casela got to the point. “I need a shuttle, and” she seems to second guess herself, “a team.”
She paces over to his desk and hands him the PaDD. “The report is about a month old. But what’s being described…seems abnormal.”. The events describe a series of events that at first appear to be practice jokes. What is odd is the complexity of them when the instigator appears to be children of very young ages. The last being a 2 year old orphan walking around the village with her mother, who died in child birth. “These children are…” And Zachariah would understand from her file.
Lt Synthi-er, CNS, always the suspicious.Zachariah accepted the PaDD and settled heavily into his chair. His initial suspicion was that he’d somehow misunderstood her. But the black and white reality of words on the page left no room for further doubts.
“How could that be?” he asked rhetorically, knowing neither of them had the chance of an answer. “You thinking it could be an anomaly?”“I’m thinking there is a good possibility of it.”
As to the question of a ship and team, he granted her request without hesitation. “Remington will be a good fit for this. Perhaps, with his background, McHarrie too? Who else did you have your eye on?”
- Captain Zachariah Cobb
“Not RTF. They are a littlentoo ready to shoot from the hip. Despite working with them, they seem to understand blunt force, and they are getting to the point of thinking before acting, but, well, not there yet. And not that there is not a place for that, in this circumstance it’s not safe. The children…” Casela paced away and back again, “they’re all orphans. The village, they know me. Well not me” she waves at herself, “but a version of me.” Then she returned to his question. “Bog. He’s a brilliant engineer and we might need someone to build a containment unit for this thing. Whatever it is. McHarrie is ARU and a doctor. We might need both skills.” She wanted Remington too, but she wasn’t sure how he worked. “I know McHarrie. He’s S31 so I know how he’ll operate. I want to take Remington, I have a good sense of who he is and how he will work, though I hope he doesn’t prove me wrong.” She thinks, “I’d like one more person, I’m not sure who though. The children…well it’s very possible that I will have my hands full keeping them out of the way. I could go under a different guise though and it wouldn’t be a problem. But they trust Zanya and it would make it easier to get them to talk.”
“There were very few I trust on this ship. There’s you, Raauhl and Manhattan. Though Manhattan has his hands full keeping RTF in check. I don’t know if he could be spared. And you and Raauhl command the ship. We may need to go just the 4 of us. I’ll leave Fenrir here as well.”
Lt. Synthi-er
As the Counselor listed her people, Cobb nodded agreement to each in turn, although in the case of Mr Bog, not before his eyebrows had floated back down from his hairline. But as for the final name, the captain could only offer a concentrated frown.
“I’m not sure I should be the first name that comes to mind for babysitting,” he shrugged. “Children tend to find me objectionable. And the feeling is usually mutual. I would be happy to release Mr Raauhl, if you can promise me you two won’t kill each other before you even land!”
- Captain Zachariah Cobb
Casela pursed her lips and cast him a side long glance. “I don’t need help babysitting. But I hate to send an odd number to go investigate. It leaves someone with out a partner.” Before he can say more she holds up a hand, “Yes, yes I know. I do it all the time. But that wasn’t with an anomaly. After Sandman, I see the practicality in it.” She couldn’t have done what Hampton did, but he wouldn’t have been able if she hadn’t kept that bratty kid type thing busy. He would have, potentially pulled Hampton back into the dream state. “But Captain you are a brilliant engineer, you have fast reflexes, and you are good with people. I’ve heard about you and Ferengi. Skills like that could be useful with the other colonists.” She keeps thinking about it. “If Manhattan went it would be a good time to get the RTF agents used to taking orders from someone else, but they require constant supervision.” She doesn’t even seem to register the jab about her and Raauhl, she’s too busy thinking the logistics. “The problem with Raauhl is no one in a border colony is going to believe a Trill being there. Their reputation for being pacifists and diplomatic in all situations would not make him believable. He’d have to have some cosmetic work done first.” She turns to look at him, it’s up to him what he wants to do.
Lt. Synthi-er, CNS or S31?“Aye, aye, I hear you, lass,” Zachariah replied. “But I have an entire crew of people here to think about. Not to mention our…passengers on the containment deck. I’m sorry,” he sighed, the regret on his face genuine, “but I can’t leave the ship to fend for itself. Commander Raauhl, he’s…well, I haven’t seen him in action myself yet, but he looks like he could handle himself in a situation such as this one. Whereas I’d be more likely to slow you down,” he chuckled in an attempt to lighten the mood. But deep down he knew, had the roles been reversed and he setting out against the Breen, he’d have abandoned everything to follow even the tiniest thread.
“Well, I suppose time is wasting,” he continued after a moment, unable to meet her eyes with his own, “let’s call ‘em in here and you can explain the situation.”
Then with a tap of his commbadge, he declared: =^= Commander Raauhl, Commander McHarrie, Lieutenant Remington, Ensign Bog, please report to my ready room immediately. =^=

=^= Commander Raauhl, Commander McHarrie, Lieutenant Remington, Ensign Bog, please report to my ready room immediately. =^= A ‘phiztt’ and a loud thump from the Jeffrie’s tube entrance was fallowed buy an exclamation “Shara’s hind tit, what in the seven hells is it now!” Securing the system he wiggles out of the cramped space =/\= McMurra, report to frame 32, deck fiveI need your skinny backside to button up this eps conduit! =/\= .
It was a few minuets later that the Tellarite stepped onto the bridge. The short engineer hadn’t changed from his coveralls, so as he thumbed open the Capetian’s door he presented a gimme figure, peaking threw his googles at the assembled officers with his tool belt jingling with tools. “This better be important, we almost lost power to medical not to mention yours truly!” He declared as the smell of burnt heir wafted threw the room.
Bog.
“What?” Cobb stared, open-mouthed, at the almost-crisp hunk of bacon before him. “I am your captain! Of course it’s important! Do you think I call engineers to my ready room to make me a bloody coffee?!”
“To be honest that was the most charitable thought to have crossed my mind, sir.
He sighed and cast a pitiful glance at his own empty mug. “Although, now that you’re here…make yourself useful and conjure up a round of coffees, eh Mr Bog?”
Bog just stood there moment as less than ‘charitable thoughts’ Came to mind, his only reaction being a detectable twice around his right eye. Mostly but not completely hidden buy his goggles.
- Captain Zachariah Cobb
Turning to the replicator he called up the coffee, ordering two spiked, one for himself and the other for the Captain. “ would you like cream and sugar” as he set fresh cup smelling of Jamison’s in front of the captain and sitting down before pushing the plain cup to the counselor.
Bog.
The unmistakable aroma of freshly-replicated coffee delighted Cobb’s olfactory senses. Then on its heels came a chaser aroma of…was that what he thought it was? Lifting his cup for a sip, the captain’s eyes widened with delight.
“Why, Mr Bog,” he exclaimed, his previous annoyance with the engineer forgotten. “That is the best cup of coffee I’ve had since…well, for a few hours, at any rate.”
But as to the offer of cream and sugar, he swatted the suggestion down as one might swipe at a Belzoidan flea. “Pshh, spoil such a perfect beverage with cream and sugar? I think not, Ensign.”
Sinking back into his chair to further enjoy his drink, a peripheral glimpse of Casela recalled the urgency of the situation. “Ah, yes,” he muttered in an attempt at organised authority, straightening his posture once again. “Now, where have the others got to, I wonder? We have a matter of some delicacy to discuss here, Mr Bog.”
