It had been an interesting few months for Mr. Durheim. Or ‘Crewman Durheim’ now, I suppose. Truthfully, he was delighted at the change of circumstance, as unexpected as it had been. A new start in life, far from those idiots who worshiped anything they didn’t understand - good riddance to the lot of them.

It had been made quite clear to him that with his new position came Responsibilities and Obligations; and potentially Consequences. He was most certainly not ‘free,’ but that was accepted. Given the alternative option, he was glad to accept - though he would have joined either way. Frankly, he couldn’t imagine anyone denying the opportunity to join the ARU - what simple-minded fools would turn down the chance to play with so-called ‘Anomalies,’ complete with the resources and backing of StarFleet?

Interestingly, he hadn’t actually been told where he was being sent to - presumably not back to the USS Gauss; he felt he had worn out his welcome there. Not that it was his fault they phrased their orders so poorly… They really should have considered the ramifications of giving him such a vague request, especially after the Chief Engineer had berated him so publicly. There had been no call for that! Well, no-one had died after all, so there couldn’t be too much ill-will, right? Such importance was placed on that; it irked and confused him. Results were everything, why was that so hard for others to understand?

Taking a quick moment to gather his bag of tools, he replied =/\=Acknowledged, ready.=/\=

Leviathan, eh? Let’s see what delights await me! He didn’t even try to conceal the grin splitting his face as the familiar feeling of the transport process swept through him.
Crewman Durheim, Engineering

Casela stepped into the transporter room to greet the new crew coming aboard. Today it was only one. She checked the PaDD. Crewman Jonathan Durheim, Engineering. Another new duty assigned to her to try and keep her out of trouble. She nodded to Chief Graves as he initiated the transport. After the new crewman materialized, Casela waited for him to step off the pad. “Chief Graves, his quarters are 32-0415-EN for his other things coming aboard, if you don’t mind.” Graves nodded and made sure that the new crewman’s personal things made it to his quarters. PaDD in hand, containing not only his quarters assignment, but all pertinent information he needed on the Leviathan. (OOC: On the MOTD is a list of useful links. It is the middle section of the box above the roster).

Casela held out her hand, rank not meaning much to her, even after all this time on board. “Welcome aboard Johathan Durheim. I’m Casela Synthi-er, ship’s counselor. Welcome to Leviathan. Watch where you step, you don’t want to end up as part of one of the anomalies housed on board.” She stepped out of the transporter room waiting for him to follow. Noting that he carried his tool bag instead of a personal one she assumed he would want to head to engineering first.
Lt. Synthi-er, CNS

Jonathan’s grin remained plastered across his face as he stepped forwards; a twinkle visible through the thick prescription goggles. “Somehow Ma’am, I expect I’ll be intimately acquainted with the Anomalies before too long. Mr.-er, Crewman Durheim; pleased to meet you.” Jonathan was a remarkably small man; and with the white labcoat he wore, looked like a mad scientist in miniature.

Casela took in the goggles, lab coat, small stature and thought he would fit in better in sickbay with the mad doctors there with Doc Fey leading the way. “I’m sure you will be. After that, watch out for the rest of the crew. We’re stranger than the anomalies.” And every new crew member thought she was joking, until they met the crew.

Extending his arm in turn to shake, it would be impossible to miss the fact that his hands (and possibly his arms) under his coat-sleeves were cybernetic. They would look somewhat unsettling to the average humanoid - closer inspection would reveal an above-average number of digits. The proffered hand would feel strangely cool; and distinctly mechanical. When combined with his extensive and obvious burn scars, Durheim frankly did not make for a pleasant view.

Casela shook his hand without worry. “Are the extra digits your design or someone else’s?” she asked. It was a good thing they had a cybernetics expert in sickbay. Between GLaDOS and now Deuheim she had a full load. And she shouldn’t forget Tock either. But Bog seemed to be taking care of his ‘medical’ needs.

“Chief Graves, if you would be so kind as to wait for my bags? They were still gathering them when I came over, and they seemed annoyed - patience may be best; I don’t think they would appreciate comms asking for their status.” He knew he shouldn’t… but it was such a blatant opportunity for some minor mischief. There were no other bags; everything Jonathan possessed he carried.

Chief Graves was a seasoned officer and enjoyed a good joke even at his expense. This assignment that sense of humor was more vital than food at times. The transport had already signaled that they were done transporting everything they had. “Well Crewman, I’m afraid you won’t get them. Your transport has already left at warp speed. You are certainly welcome to try and chase them on foot,” he suggested with the slightest of grins.

Jonathan had only a mild twinge of disappointment at the failure of the prank - but to take it in stride; that was a good sign. “Hmmm; I suppose I’ll find how how well the replicators are working… Running is not my strong suit!”

Raising his unoccupied hand, he flexed the digits; showing off the five fingers and two thumbs - and the unnatural flexibility that had been built-in. “They are of my own design and make, though I took note of Dr. Brightman’s previous work; and a colleague provided invaluable help with the integration. Though for some reason, fingerprint scanners seem to give me trouble at times.” Turning to face the Lt, he asked “Do you think that might be due to my short stature? It does affect the angle at which I can place my hand.”

Casela chuckled, “It might be due to your height, though it might be the added thumb print that is setting it off. I’ll speak to the XO and COS about having your height and number of thumbs integrated into your security access. Hopefully it won’t be a problem. On this ship a malfunction that causes a split second delay in access can be deadly. We’ll address that quickly.”

Though he was wary of relying on the first impression, he was pleasantly surprised at the woman’s reaction to his appearance - while her interest was typical, he was used to it being flavored with horror. Many made the assumption that he was crippled - which he was quick to advantage of. Perhaps that is to be expected of the ship’s Counselor; time will tell if the rest of the crew is so forward-thinking. But then, if everyone is truly as ‘strange’ as she suggests, this may be quite the pleasant ship!

Crewman Durheim, Engineering

Casela, examined his arm with a critical eye. “There is a cybernetics expert on board that I’m sure would love to talk shop with you. We also have a crewman who recently lost his entire arm. They are working on trying to create a replacement for him. Your personal and professional expertise would be welcomed if you have any interest in helping. We also have an AARM on board, a KAI-9 unit. I wonder if something similar could be made as an extra attachment for him. To give him a bit of dexterity when needed. It is certainly a unique and I imagine useful design.”

“It would certainly be an opportunity for me to earn my keep while I get situated - and I do have some ideas that I haven’t able to implement yet! Though the loss of only one limb does present limitations - it’s all too easy to overbuild the cybernetic limb, and cause further injury. If the patient is willing, a bilateral limb replacement opens up a whole realm of possibilities! After all, flesh and bone are so limiting, don’t you agree?” His manic expression of glee was impossible to miss; and his hands sent off a few sparks as he excitedly rubbed them together.

“You would have to speak to Dr. Kastil and the injured crewman about that. But I’m sure she would appreciate the input. Be sure to let her know I mentioned at your physical exam.”

“As for the KAI-9… Perhaps replacement of the ‘tail?’ It would be subject to the overall form of the unit, but if it does resemble a canine as the name suggests, other locations may provide more drawbacks than advantages. Hmmm.... Evolution is a fickle and luck-based thing, but it can be quite ruthless in its selection process.” Jonathan’s face was now thoughtful; his attention quickly switching between presented problems.

“Well once you get settled I’ll get Cpt Cobb and M Cpt Manhattan and we’ll meet up to see what we can for the KAI-9. But it’s not a priority at the moment.”

“Tell me Mr. Durheim, what brings you to be assigned to our little piece of horror?”
Lt. Synthi-er, CNS

Durheim took a moment to consider the question - taking in the Lieutenant’s patches and rank, his practiced response of ‘I don’t think I’m allowed to tell you about that’ remained unsaid. “I don’t intend to be avoidant of your question, Ma’am; but my placement here is directly related to incident 31543254B-51A; involving long-term… exposure, let’s say, to an Anomaly. Due to the ARU’s insistence of compartmentalization; which I do applaud; I am unsure of how much I may reveal. At the… Conclusion of that incident, I was given an opportunity to provide my expertise to the organization, which I gladly agreed to. It seemed like a wonderful chance to dive headfirst into this fascinating world!” Jonathan’s eagerness was genuine and plain to see; though only time would tell if it was based in naivety.

Casela raised a brow and help up her ARU Abell level clearance ID. “The ARU would be very lax if they didn’t put a counselor on board that had the clearance to speak to the crew about what they are doing and what may be troubling them. And those in charge of the ARU are not stupid.” Frustrating and dismissive, but not stupid. “If you don’t wish to directly discuss it I can always pull the file later.” She walked over to the LCARS interface on the wall of the corridor and tapped in a couple of commands. “Now the computer will lock the recording of our stroll for only the highest clearance. You can feel free to talk or we can go to my office where it is equally secure but has a door we can shut.”

She nodded, “I can see how this is an interesting opportunity for engineering and science officers. Medical too. We have a unique crew here, filled with diverse individuals.” Okay if Casela was being honest, that wasn’t true. The more she did these evals, the more she realized the crew was not diverse, all of them, herself included, were crazy and misfits and they all had secrets to too keep, or secrets they wanted to reveal just to prove they were right. “So I know what you are looking forward to. Tell me what skills you think you bring to the ship to make our missions more successful?”
