Renveer raised an eyebrow slightly at the smile, an acknowledgement that it was an expression that was perhaps odd for a vulcan. But he nodded in understanding. “Being aboard a starship isn’t the same as serving on one… Once you know a ship is your home and that you are an important member of its crew and responsible for its mission, it does gain a renewed sense of splendor to it, if you ask me.” Renveer folded his hands in his lap, his face warm but not overly emotional. “It sounds like you’ve encountered many people from different civilizations already, given your time around diplomats. Is that part of why you joined Starfleet? Or I suppose, my question in general is: what reasons did you have for joining Starfleet?” It wasn’t meant to be challenging, the executive officer seemed genuinely interested.

Tonav sighed it was a past he didn’t like to talk about much but he knew it would make the commander smile “well I joined Starfleet under the advisement of ambassador T’lok of whom I was one of his apprentices during my youth”

“you know commander when I first left Vulcan iv to go to the academy I didn’t want to share my past because of a secret i have kept for the ambassador”

Renveer smiled, impressed by the mention of the notable vulcan diplomat. “Ah, Ambassador T’lok! You are a lucky man indeed. I’m sure you learned a lot in your tutelage under such an important member of the vulcan government.” But then the executive officer frowned slightly. “A secret? I’m sure there are many things that you learned from Ambassador T’lok that are not meant to be shared with just anyone. And I don’t intend to force you to share anything you’re uncomfortable with revealing, Ensign. As long as the information you’re referring to wouldn’t put the crew in danger in any way…” Renveer looked at Tonav with a quizzical look, hoping his assumption was correct.

Tonav’s face started to relax “you are indeed right commander T’lok was like a father figure to me, you see he was my guardian during my youth as i was orphaned during one of the wars”

The trill man nodded in sympathy, pressing his fingers together in a steeple. “I’m sorry for your loss, Ensign.” He paused for a moment to sigh tiredly. “The wars we have had to fight to preserve the freedom of the people of the Federation have taken so many lives… but I’m glad they did not take yours, at least. And I am thankful that you had a guardian like Ambassador T’lok to watch over you. He obviously saw great potential in you when he recommended you for Starfleet. I see that you’re a scientist, what is your specialty, if you don’t mind me asking? What type of science are you most skilled at?”

OOC: I’ve actually worked with a mentor to update my character to have T’lok actually be their father just as a heads up

Tonav smiled “yea my mother lost her life in that battle she was an admiral for Starfleet, my specialty yes i specialize in astronomy and astrophysics”

IC: “I wish I could thank her for her service,” Renveer said with a somber tone. After a moment of silence to respect Tonav’s loss, he nodded in acknowledgement of his skills. “Those are very useful specialties to have, and our science department will be lucky to have you. Have you met your department head, Lieutenant Simms?”

Tonav sighed ” yeah she was i also lost my father during my time at starfleet and yes i have meet the lieutenant”

Renveer nodded. “It sounds like your support system has taken some hit recently. Entering main fleet is stressful on the best of days, so I hope you’re able to make friends with other members of the crew so you have an anchor while you’re onboard. How well do you usually get along with others? Are you a team player, a leader?”

Tonav looked at the commander before glancing over his pad ” yeah yeah it has been hard and I tend to work well with a team of people”

Renveer nodded. “Well good! That’s a great quality to have in Starfleet. Do you find yourself being the leader in the group? The person who offers ideas? The person who supports others? The person who consolidates all the different perspectives? What type of group member are you?”
