It was a couple days after Stores had left the gifts and cards in Janvier’s office that the doctor and Enj walked into the cargo bay. It had been a quieter than usual shift in Sickbay. With the last of her reports now completed and no long-term patients there hadn’t been much for her and Enj to do. By the end of the shift, Enj had grown restless and ansty. It was as good a time as any for Elaine to search out and thank the person behind it all. She had her suspicions that she knew who it was, but she wanted to be sure so she could thank Reed properly. Even if it she had been wrong, or he wasn’t around, the walk would do her and Enj some good at least. Because it was a good chance for them to stretch their legs it had seemed like a good idea to bring Enj along with her.But when Enj suddenly took off as soon as they entered, she started reconsidering the wisdom in her decision. Watching Enj tear around the Cargo Bay like he’d been locked in a kennel for a week, was exhausting. Perhaps it would have been wiser for her to let him run around on the holodeck for a while before she had taken him through the ship. He was like a raquet ball pinging around a court, as the dog dashed madly from one crew member to another. It was hard work just maintaining visuals on him, she didn’t have a hope of catching him with the head start he had on her.
Lt. Janvier (CMO) & Enj
Stores, being on his back under the transporter platform found himself at the mercy of a ball of energized fir and a wet tong. “Ach!” And muffled thump come from under the platform where the tan pant legs and heavy mag boots are sticking out. “Well hello buddy, did you escape sickbay”? Tho with Enj trying to lick the inside of his nose and mouth it sounded more like bad coms…
Clinton”Stores” Reed, Supercargo
“Enj!” Janvier admonished, running over as soon as she spotted the dicoloured ball licking his most recent victim. “Let the man breath,” As soon as she was in arms length she reached under Enj’s belly and hauled him up and off of Stores so that the man could have some room. “I’m sorry,” she apologised, securing the wiggly animal firmly under her arm, “I should have taken him for a run before I let him go wandering about the ship,”
She stepped back giving, Reed space to get up properly. “You know better than to pounce like that.” she scolded the dog, though one look at her face it was obvious that she wasn’t really serious in her scolding. Especially when Enj managed to use the arm holding him up as a springboard to launch himself up towards Elaines face and smothering her with doggy kisses until the doctor managed to get him safely tucked away again.
Lt. Janvier (CMO) & Enj
The sight of the Doctor’s face halfway under the transporter platform was if anything more of a surprise to Stores that’s was Enj, who for a moment suffered a laps of judgment and tried to set up. Eliciting another thump and a muffled curse from under the machine.
The doctor winced in sympathy at the sound of the bump. She hadn’t meant to surprise Stores and make him hit his head.
Once freed from the wet assault and recovering his presence of mind, Stores slithers out from the access way.
Setting up, Stores face showing a look of surprise and a spreading blush. “Uh… hello Doctor, to what do we owe the pleasure of your presence?”
Clinton “Stores” Reed, Supercargo
“I’m trying to find someone and I thought you might be able to help me Mr Reed.” Janvier smiled, she tilted her head a little to the side, her eyes quietly reading Stores’ face. “Someone left a gift for Enj and myself in my office. I want to have the chance to thank them, but all I could find out about them was that the transport was initiated through the cargo bay transporters.”
She paused for a moment to read the mans face and body language to see if he would give himself away, then said softly, “Thank you,”
Lt. Janvier (CMO)
Behind the glasses Stores blue eyes fairly twinkled. “When you go above and beyond to treat peaple with kindness and dignity, some one is going to notice, Doctor.” The older mans eyes glistening with gradifaction as he reached out to stroke Enj’s fur. “Thank you” Stores silently mouthed.
Enj wagged his tail and licked Stores face.
After an few moments awkward silence, “Do you drink Coffee Doctor Janvier?”
Clinton “Stores” Reed, Supercargo
“Coffee,” Elaine looked surprised at the suggestion, “I do. Actually it was pretty much all I lived on back at the Acadamy. Coffee is the traditional med studen diet,” she joked.
“Do you drink it much?” she asked.
Lt. Janvier (CMO) & Enj
“Well, I do now, but honestly I will take my alkaloid stimulants just about any way peaple brew them” Stores smile growing to a grin. “I am working on a project for Ensin Forgrave, and I need a neutral coconspirator.”
“Well why not?” The doctor grinned, “Are you free now?”
“If you would give me about five minuets to button up Old Number Two up, cant leave her with her bloomers showing.” Laying back and pulling himself back under the platform, “ I would love your opinion…” squirming back out in less than a slow count to twenty “ and your company more so” Setting up and turning around to secure the panel with practiced movements. Like any good engineer he was done in less than half time he estimated.
Clinton “Stores” Reed, Supercargo
<snip>
“I’d be glad to take the chance to escape Sickbay for a little longer and coffee and company sounds like the perfect reason.” Her eyes gleamed with sincerity, watching him working. As she watched she found herself appreciating the fluid, professional movements, it was evident that Stores was more than familiar with his work. A true expert of his area.“So what’s this project you’ve been doing with Forgrave?” she asked once Stores was back on his feet.
Lt. Janvier (CMO)
Stores smiled at his new coconspirator. “I call it ‘Issac’s brew ‘ a decidedly not medically approved replicator coffee recipe. But as you have such experience with this magical elixir and are the Federation medical authority in residence, well that makes you the perfect victim! “
Clinton”Stores”Reed, Supercargo“I knew I got my degree for more than just broken bones and spare parts,” she joked “It was to answer the call of coffee development,” her eye caught a flurry of movement from the corner of the cargo bay. While Elaine and Stores had been talking the small animal had wandered away and was now no longer where he should be. “Enj get back here,” she called softly. Mischevious brown eyes met hers as Enj stayed where he was, refusing to obey, his tail wagging happily.
With a sigh and a roll of the eyes Elaine turned to Stores, “Excuse me for a moment,” she said taking a step towards Enj, “Enj come,” she ordered with a little more command than before, but all she got in responce was a wag of the tail as Enj resolutly place his bum on the floor. With another roll of the eyes at the Shih Tzus disobedience she made her way over to bring him back herself.
Enj watched his human approaching with the same air of a child pulling a prank. He stayed where he was, watching Janvier approach until she was within arms length. Just before she could grab him, he ducked around her legs and trotted over to where Stores was standing.
Lt. Janvier (CMO) & Enj
Stores looked down at Enj and grinned, “Don’t look to me. I ain’t saving you, your mistress scares me more than a little!” Standing stock still, the stupid grin never left his face as the Doctor retrieved her wayward companion. “Well he isn’t any harder to manage than a bunch of engineering ratings.” Offering his arm,” Shall we?”
Clinton”Stores”Reed, Supercargo
Elaine took the offered arm with a smile, “My pleasure,” she twisted briefly to fix Enj with a stern look, hoping the dog would recognise that he was to behave and follow Stores and Elaine through the ship. He seemed to get the message, as the pair walked through the ship Enj was never out of sight. Whether it was because he’d already used up his extra energy or if he knew better than to test Elaine, only the little dog knew.
“So is this how you spend your free time?” Janvier asked lightly, “Taking people to sample your efforts as a coffee entreprenure?” there was a certain twinkle in her eyes that meant she was joking.
Lt. Janvier (CMO) & Enj
“Lovely lady, collecting and writing replicator recipes is just one of my hobbies. Corrupting beautiful young Doctors is another.” Stores whispered conspiratorially. Intelligence and snark, two of his favorite things in people…
The doctors face graced a faint shade of pink. “Is that so?” She hummed, turning her head a little, “We’ll have to see about that” her eyes glinted with a touch of friendly challenge in them. She hadn’t dated since she had graduated, too focused on her career and she hadn’t been interested. Now she was surprised to find that she was more than just flattered by his attention, she enjoyed his company and his wit. She liked spending time with him and there was a part of her that was curious to see where it would go.
Eventually their stroll ended at the Mess Hall door,” After you M’am.” He bowed with a flourish…
Clinton”Stores”Reed, Supercargo
“Why thank you good Sir,” Elaine bobbed in an approximation of a curtsey, though in her uniform it didn’t quite hold the same effect. She strode into the Mess Hall. Given the time of day it was busy, but she could still see a couple of empty tables. It seemed to be mostly filled with officers like her and Stores who were grabbing a bite to eat or drink either having just finished a shift or on their break. In the evening the atmosphere would be busier again, with officers wanting to drink and relax before calling it a night.
“How about I grab us a table while you get us some of this coffee of your’s and Ensign Forgrave?” she asked her eye already on an empty table by the replicator.
Lt. Janvier, CMO
“That I can do, lovely lady” Stores made his way to the replicators, keying up Isaac’s brew and ordering up his accustomed watch cup, then thinking of the Doctor and ordered up a bit more feminine cup as well. Then he asked for a dozen beans in a portion cup as well as an equal amount of grounds. To his delight one of the whole beans was broken long wise. He started to fetch the drinks and then desired that baklava wold be a perfect addition. The small but rich confection would go great with coffee.
Coming to the table with his spoils, Stores stoped dead in his tracts “Stores!” Looking to the young doctor, and a little sheepishly, I forgot to ask if you prefers cream or a sweetener…”
Clinton”Stores”Reed, Supercargo
“I like a little cream with it, but I’ll drink it pretty much any way it comes.” She ruffled Enj’s fur and chuckled, “You’re asking a doctor how she likes her coffee. I used to drink that stuff like it was air when I was a med student.” she grimced, “I used to do coffee shots when I was studying for finals in the Acadamy. Not my finest moment given the damage straight coffee can do. Not that I can blame myself, those exams were brutal. You’d have to Vulcan to pass them without caffine.”
Lt. Janvier, CMO
Setting down the tray, “Let me get me get you some cream then” Stores tuned away, wondering why this woman flustered him so. He was old enough to be her father.
It took him a moment to fetch a small pitcher of cream, and make his way back to the table.
“Here you go, wouldn’t want to deprive a woman of her pleasures.” He said as he slipped in to the seat opposite hers.Clinton”Stores”Reed, Supercargo
“Cream and baklava you’re too kind,” Janvier grinned, mixing some of the cream into her coffee until it was just the right shade for her. The aroma of the coffee was already drifting into her senses. Was it just her or did it seem stronger than just other replicated coffees? Closing her eyes she brought the cup up and took in the aroma, unaware of the enjoyment that was radiating from her face. She took a sip letting the flavour absorb into her tastebuds. The coffees strong flavour was softened by the cream she had added but there was still that faint nutty flavour she enjoyed. It reminded her of the little coffee shop May liked to take her too when she was home. Her eyes shot open as she realised just what it was that she hadn’t been able to put her finger on. The coffee didn’t smell or taste like it was replicated. It tasted real.
“That’s amazing!” she turned her astonished gaze on Stores, in awe with the coffee she had just tried, “That doesn’t taste like it was replicated at all, but I watched you get it from the replicator.”
Lt. Janvier, CMO
Stores watched the young woman slyly over the top of his cup, his smile spreading as he saw her reaction. “Glad the Doctor approves, but in all honestly the Chief Medical Officer May not. This is a fully caffeinated non nutritive beverage, not meeting Starfleet’s guidelines for a healthful diet.” The last said with a wink.
He was thrilled at her initial reaction, but despite his devil may care persona, he was concerned about getting gigged for bypassing that particular protocol.
Clinton “Stores”Reed, Supercargo
Janvier glanced down at the coffee in her hand and took another sip, considering what Stores was asking of her. “No, coffee is not exactly entirely healthy and the Chief Medical Officer definitely knows the damage it can cause. But the same could be argued about deserts and alcohol.” She paused, tilting her head a little, reading his face, “I think - and this is speaking as both the Chief Medical Officer and the Doctor - the key is moderation.” she winks, “So long as nobody drinks more than they should, the Chief Medical Officer won’t complain.”
Lt. Janvier, CMO
His face looked like it would crack in two, “The computer delivered a rather stern lecture about imbibing more than 400mg of caffein, I disabled that particular squak. But it’s a limited access program at the moment. “ and with a mischievous wink, “But as it seems to have met the approval of a real expert, I figure I can spring it on Isaac.”
Clinton”Stores”Reed, Supercargo
Suddenly wondering the wisdom in letting Stores keep his coffee, after seeing the look that could only mean trouble of some kind, she quickly amended herself “If you - or anyone - come into Sickbay suffering from a caffine overdose, than a lecture from the computer will be the least of your concerns.” she looked Stores dead in the eyes so that he knew she was serious. Her love for coffee would not save him if she found any sign Isaacs brew was endangering his health.
“However, that’s the Chief Medical Officer talking. I haven’t had coffee this good since I left Earth.” she took another sip. Her eyes closed as she simply enjoyed the flavour in the drink. “You don’t reckon you could install this recipie in my office and my quarters could you?”
Lt. Janvier, CMO
“Now Doc, I do enjoy your company but I have to admit that you frighten me more than a little” Tho he was still smiling, he was obviously serious.”And besides your wrath the last thing I want is to hurt one of my crew mates.” Taking a sip. “ let’s say I put the squak back on for the first time user, and a confirmation protocol for exceeding 400mg a day. A report could be generated for sickbay as well in the case of excess.” The idea of harming another with a food item was a little unsettling. Like many of his generation one was somewhat caviler about your personal safety, as the assumption was that medical would fix it.
“I’d appreciate that,” She grinned, “I wouldn’t want to deprive anyone of their coffee but a doctors first duty is to the well-being of the crew.”
“As to uploading the recipe for you, I would be honored. The big kid like grin back on his face.
Clinton”Stores”Reed, Supercargo.
“Thank you,” she grinned back, she had missed a good coffee and couldn’t hide her excitement of having access to it once again. Taking another sip, this time with a bite of baklava to accompany it. “I’d say with your engineering talents, the Dresden is blessed to have you.” she ruffled Enj’s fur ignoring the way he was not-so-subtily begging for a pice of baklava. “So what other projects are you working on presently?”
Lt. Janvier, CMO
Stores eyes narrowed a bit, but still maintained their sense of mischief. He certainly wasn’t going to tell her about the bourbon or moonshine recipes he was working on, being able to come up with a bottle to smooth things over with the CO was on his list, as was trading stock with the civilian side of Star Bases they may call on. Replacing his phaser was well underway, but the personal transporter had to wait on an unsecured replicator. “I’m always tinkering with something, been working on a method of repairing plasma conduits institute. But that’s a long term project, as it seems to be three steps forward and two back.”
“I am always willing to to take projects on”Stores winked”As long as I don’t get drug in front of the XO or worse, keel hauled buy Captain Holloway that is.”
“I wouldn’t wish that on anyone,” Elaine laughed, thinking of how she had accidentally stumbled on Holloway dressing down an Ensign who had screwed up on his jobs. She hadn’t minced her words at all, and Elaine had snuck off again wincing in sympathy for the poor man.
His face taking a serious look,” What about the good Doctor, what do you get up to in your free time?”but he couldn’t hold it as his face split into a grin.
Clinton”Stores”Reed, Supercargo
Elaine blinked. What did she do in her free time? Most of her spare time was spent in Sickbay, even when she wasn’t supposed to be on shift. If she wasn’t being a doctor than she was studying. And when she wasn’t doing that? What did she like to do for fun? At the Acadamy all she had done was study. It had been easier than going out somewhere and starting a fight. Even as a teenager, all the parties she had attended had been as a means of gaining attention rather than for fun. “Sometimes my staff drag me out to a concert if there’s one on. One of the nurses found out I didn’t get out much and now my staff invite me along if someone from medical is performing. I’m a bit of a book nerd,” she blushed, hoping she didn’t sound too lame, “I often forget to do much else. But,I do enjoy the concerts, I’m not talented like that, so it’s nice to support others who are.”
