Hammor finished with the Medical portion of his check in. “Now to bother the Skipper.” he thought to himself. He made his way to the three story tall bridge and stopped short. It was a massive space, and he smiled as he looked around. He had studied the ship’s specifications for over a month now, but seeing it in person was amazing. Slowly shaking his head, he made his way to the CO’s office and pressed the chime, then switched the bag he carried to his other hand to make sure he could shake without the extra gesture.Hammor, Ops
“Come in!”
The voice carried through the intercom just before the Ready Room’s doors slid open. Inside, the office was rather bland, almost as if the newly instated CO hadn’t had a lot of time to think about the decor.
It was very hard to miss the officer walking into the room, and from behind the standard Starfleet issue desk, Molly gave the new Chief of Operations a polite smile.
“Ah, Lieutenant Hammor. Welcome aboard. I hope you have been finding your way through the Dresden just fine.” Holloway stood up and motioned to a chair across the desk, before handing out a hand for Hammor to shake. “Please take a seat.” The petite frame of the Dresden’s new Commanding Officer was even more apparent when compared to the Orion’s stature. At 5’5’’ Molly felt like she would need a kiddie stool in order not to strain her neck looking upwards. Her skin was pale and freckled and her fiery red hair was neatly tied in a ballerina bun.
“So, what can I do for you, Lieutenant? I’ve been hearing you’ve already made a few changes to my roster. Maybe you could tell me a little more about them?” The tone was stern, but there was a slight hint of amusement in Holloway’s expression.

Hammor took the diminutive women’s hand and said “Pleasure to meet you, Ma’am. And yes, about that…” and he released her hand and dropped the bag to the deck where it landed with a solid thud. He took the offered seat and said “So… I fired the Quarter Master. He was absolutely inept. But I reviewed and prioritized the delivery schedules with more care given as to where things need to go in what order, and by my calculations I believe between me and Ensign Reed we can save about four days of resupply time. I’ve already tasked Reed with the grunt work, and after I am cleared with my check ins, I’ll take over the Quarter Master’s office until I can find a suitable replacement. Which at this point, will be Mr. Reed. And, again once I am cleared, I’ll meet with each Department Head for an up to date list of needed supplies and outstanding requests, and Operations will try and have all of those addressed by the time we depart.”

Laying back in her seat, Molly crossed her arms over her chest. An impressed look on her face. “Well, I have to say I am impressed with both your efficiency and your candor. Mr. Reed seems to be a very capable officer, so I am glad you found a more suitable place for him. I must just give you a word of caution… I admire your productivity on the job, but I expect it won’t come at the expense of overworking the crew. Is that clear? I’m all for pushing people to work harder, but it’s important you know the line between pushing the crew and overloading them.”
The Intelligence Officer in her wanted to add ‘I have my own ways of knowing what is going on.’ but she bit down the remark not wanting to sound hostile on her first week.

The big green eyes watched her as she spoke and he said “Operations is the science of knowing what to do and when to do it. It’s about efficiency, not labor, Captain. I’m not sure what Operations officers you have dealt with in the past; but from that statement I will assume they weren’t decent ones.” He leaned forward and looked directly at her, his emerald eyes fixed on hers. “I am not a braggart, Captain. What I am is very good at my job. I hold myself to a higher standard than most Ops officers I have dealt with… and I hold my team to the same standard. If, in order to rectify the mistakes of the preceding personnel in this role, I have my team working excess hours, I assure it is both necessary and done with safety as the first priority. But sometimes we will be working very long hours.” and he leaned back and added “My goal is to be able to address all concerned with a simple comm to the appropriate personnel. That is the goal, but it will take time to build to that point. For now, you have myself and Ensign Reed working diligently to make sure that all the sections of this ship are supplied and staffed as they should be. My priorities are split right now. Morning is supplies, afternoon is personnel. And within the next ninety-six hours you will a full ship, supplies list, updated crew roster and needed personnel, and a prioritized list of requests by Department for you and I to review. Does that work for you, Captain?”

A slight smirk played on Molly’s lips as she let the officer speak, and before she replied she let his words hang in the air for a moment.
“You don’t need hard labor to overwork a crew, Lieutenant. All you have to do is to have them work very long hours, just as you mentioned, I might add, for a consistent amount of time.” She exhaled softly through her nose before continuing. Her arms crossed over her chest. “I don’t know who you think you are, Mr. Hammor, to think that you can come to my office and tell me the quality of my previous crew. I am glad that you hold yourself to such high regard and I don’t doubt that you are able to endure what you are proposing, neither that you will surely overwork the crew, or at least put them in any kind of danger. All I gave you was a reminder, to make sure that, even though you are a tough person, others may not be like you. Health is not just a matter of the body, but also a matter of the mind, and many times exerting someone can be counter productive.”
Just like Hammor’s eyes never left Molly’s, Molly’s gaze never faltered either. “As I said, I am glad that you have found Ensign Reed a better purpose on board and I like your schedule. Just make sure your efficiency doesn’t get complaints to my desk.”
Taking a slow breath, Holloway continued. “I take it though, that was not the main subject that brought you here?”

Hammor looked at her and said “I didn’t comment on the state of your crew, Ma’am, just the particular individuals I am taking over from. I would assume that since the ship isn’t in pieces and the crew adrift in space as lifeless corpses then they know what they are doing. I will reserve my judgement on that matter till I have gotten to know them. As to who I think I am, Ma’am… I think I am the Operations Chief of this ship. Outside of your XO, I am the one who has to give you the most honest and direct information you can possibly get as to what is happening on your ship. And I have to give it to you without regard to feelings, rank, or personal repercussions. I won’t mince words or beat around the bush with you, Captain. I will call like I see it, and you will get nothing but the truth… whether you like that truth or not.” He paused for a moment and watched her reaction.
“If that isn’t what you want me to do, tell me now and I will try to be more like your stereotypical Ops Chief: lining my office with black market goods and doling out supplies just enough to make sure the various departments don’t complain to you about me being a lazy sack of targ droppings. But if that’s your choice, you should probably just fire me so I can stop unpacking.”
