Almost as if someone was… crying? Suddenly a bloodcurdling scream pierced the air. But before the pair could even think whether or not to go against the orders they had been given, turn around and return to the roundabout, they would spot three humanoid figures hurriedly moving in their direction. : : : : Judging by their physiognomy and garments, they were clearly Regian, the native people of the planet. : : : : Condor Hannibal sighed when he heard the screams, fully understanding what was happening. He had been there before and, between the two of them, only he understood what he had to do. He waved to the Regians, He didn’t trust them anymore, but he would need their help for the rescue. -COS
The Squad Leader ran up to the group, his rifle down. “How the hell did you all end up out here. This area is restricted. Those freaks catch you out here you’re all dead.... now move it!” He snapped in a hushed tone pointing back toward the rest of his team. It was clear the Regians, at the very least, had the two Federation Officers best interests in mind as they hurried away from the crash site urging their two new guests to join them. A little over three kilometers later, they stopped beside an armored personnel carrier.

Hannibal followed them out of the area.

Taking a few deep breaths, the Squad Leader spoke to both. “Juhani Swale… Section Leader for R-12. We saw your craft go down in The Zone and hoped we’d find you first. I would assume that’s not the case?” He frowned.
Condor

“No, you found us first. We are from the United Federation of Planets, We were shot down by what looked like Romulans. My name is Lt Hannibal Ashur, I”m the Chief of Security of the USS Dresden.” He took a few breaths he wasn’t speaking the full truth not until he understood what was going on. “What’s going on?” He aked the squad leader.

Bump

“We detected the blast that brought down your shuttle in the Control Centre.” Swale began, his pace of speech a quick yet controlled clip. “Hopes were to get to you before the… freaks… that took over this area of our planet found you.” The man shivered at the word ‘freaks’ but pushed on. “Ever since they showed up a little over an orbit ago, no one that went very far into the wood ever came out. R-12…” Swale smiled a slight smile. “… Recon-12, my Unit, have been on over a dozen rescues in the past orbit and have the highest find rate of any team in The Zone. With the importance of your visit, we knew we had to get you back.” Then, with a sudden realization hit him, Swale asked reluctantly. “Lieutenant… where’s your Captain?”

Swale, R-12 Leader

Hannibal looked at the squad that rescued him. He didn’t trust them, but he needed their help none the less. He sighed, looked back at where he came from then turned back to the squad leader.

“I’m not sure, but It’s not someplace good. Do you know anything about them, where they came from, who they are?” He asked, curious.

-COS

The Squad Leader sighed and shook his head. “Sadly, not much. Not much ever happened out in these parts but about two orbits ago, a couple of children were playing when they came across a heavy metal door… with an design on it not too different from the one on your chest. As they turned to leave, the door began to open… they ran as children do… only the young boy was struck down by some sort of weapon. The girl… about 15 orbits, managed to escape. Multiple teams have been sent into the area since, few survive, Those that make it out talk of horned monsters with weapons of light. That’s why when your government contacted us days after our first… what is it you call it… oh yes, warp flight… we asked for help. Our sensors detected your battle with the other ship and sent us to find you.” The man shrugged. “That’s about it”

Swale

Hannibal nodded. “Let’s get back to your camp, I need to contact my ship. Afterwards, If possible I would like some gear, I need to rescue my friends.” Hannibal asked the squad leader.

-COS

Swale nodded. “Of course” Motioning to the direction from which the squad had came, Swale brought his rifle back to the ready. “Come on. We’ll get you in touch with your people. We do hope you can find a way to save those taken.”

The team was deathly quiet as they moved. A little over a half hour later, they reached the squad’s vehicle. An hour later, Hannibal arrived at the Regian’s military headquarters, flanked by the squad. As they reached the stairs in front of the main building, a tall distinguished looking woman in a green military uniform raced down to meet them… a guard on either side. “Mr. Ashur, I’m General Klara Shuan… I’d like to give you a warm welcome to our world. Sadly, those bastards took that opportunity away from me. Please come with me and we’ll try to reach your ship.”

“Thank you General, I appreciate the welcome. I wish it was under better circumstances.” He greeted diplomatically. “Please lead the way.”

Walking into the Communications Centre, General Shuan waved at the Comm Officer and a chirp sang through the room. The General turned to Ashur and smiled. “We have a channel open for you Mr. Ashur to your ship.”

Gen. Shuan

“Thank you General.”

Orin was still a little dazed between the crash and the scream of the runabout as it was hit by the attack, but he was coming out of it though still a bit fuzzy.

“Everything here is cranky.” he murmured.

LtC Orin Losc, Engineering

“It’s gets worse.” Hannibal muttered to Losc before tapping the comm.

“I hope not.” Orin replied.

=^=Dresden, This is Lt Ashur, anyone there?=^=

-COS

Bump

Suddenly, the voice of the Dresden’s XO came through. Panic and relief could both be heard in her tone.

=/\= Lt. Ashur, Nolan here. What happened? Where are you? Is everyone okay? We saw your shuttle go down. We were attacked by a Romulan vessel and we suffered extensive damage and are still trying to repair our systems. =/\= There was a short pause. And then Nolan’s voice appeared more somber. =/\= Lieutenant… where is Colonel Harris? =/\=

Lt. Cmdr. Nolan, XO

Orin looked over at Hannibal glad he didn’t have to answer that question, mainly because he didn’t know.

-LtC Orin Losc, Engineering

Hannibal thought quickly. He was trying to figure out what to say, and what the plan would be without relaying to much on the open Comm. He decided to risk angering the new XO and risk another Court Marshal, by ignoring the XO.

=^=Master Chief Brown, are you there?=^= He asked, thinking on his words carefully.

=^=I’m here Lieutenant. =^= Came the reply.

=^=Master Chief, Remember the wooden shoe incident?=^=

=^=Yeeahh....” there was a long pause. “NO, absolutely not.=^=

=^=We have too.=^=

=^=It barely worked the first time.=^=

=^=It worked didn’t it.=6=

=^=Let me come down and help you.=^=

=^=No, the XO needs you more than I. =^=

=^=She won’t go for it.=^=

=^=Just do it.=^=

=^=Dammit it=^= Brown swore.

=^=Ashur out=^=

He turned at looked at Losc.

“I am so going to get court marshaled for this.” He said with a sign.

-COS

“You realize I have no point of reference for what you’re on about?” Orin said with a smirk.

Gen. Shuan walked over to Ashur with a concerned look on her face. “Lieutenant…” She began politely. “… would you mind… at least… telling me just what’s going on?”

Gen. Shuan

“Sorry General. I am going to rescue the rest of our party. I have done this before and I know what I’m doing. Commander Losc will stay behind and coordinate with you and the Dresden. If at all possible General, could you please create a distraction for me?” He said as he took off his uniform top to reveal a black under shirt.

-COS

Just as the General was about to speak, an alarm sounded in the Centre. “General Shaun! Sensors indicate a shuttle craft leaving the Forbidden Zone at a high rate of speed. Two on board… one male, one female… both human.”

Shaun turned to Ashur with a smile. “I think we found your Captain, Mr. Ashur”

Condor

“Well, I guess they don’t need rescue then?” He replied sadly, knowing what was coming. “What about the base in the forbidden Zone?” he asked curious.

-COS

General Shuan pursed her lips for a moment and then began. “For the past 10 cycles now, the area of our world where your shuttle went down has been the sight of numerous… suspicious disappearances. Legends grew around it, telling of a mysterious… structure… that if seen, one would never return. A cycle and a half back, the area’s Recon Team actually stumbled on a large gray building… completely hidden from view by air and almost completely covered by vegetation.” The General sighed and continued. “There were two miracles that day… that the team found it, and that they survived to tell the tale.”

Tapping a panel on the console in front of her, the General brought grainy video up on the screen. A team of several men and two women where moving through heavy vegetation when one of the women swore and walked ahead of the party. Ashur could clearly see the woman move toward a structure of some sort. She then reached up and pulled back the vegetation. General Shuan paused the video and there it was, clear as day. Below the crest of the United Federation of Planets were the words:

FEDERATION SCIENCE COUNCIL
ADVANCED CIVILIZATION REMOTE OBSERVATION FACILITY
SFI-387-C

“As you can see, Mr. Ashur…” The General spoke flatly. “… the facility at the heart of the Forbidden Zone is, or at least, at one time was… your’s.” She then hit play on the recording. Moments later, a battle cry that would send chills up Ashur’s spine echoed through the room. The language, the appearance, the uniforms… Ashur would know immediately… Jem’Hadar. The squad of Jem’Hadar shock troopers stormed over the top of the facility, firing rapidly. Returning fire, the Recon Team bolted from the area. The video cuts a few moments later, the team running for their lives.

“Thankfully…” Shuan sighed. “… all five made it back alive, though two were gravely injured, one only leaving care last week.” Pausing for a moment, she smiled… slightly… and continued. “When your… First Contact… officer made contact shortly after our hyperdrive test two months back, you can imagine… we were a bit… suspicious. The Premier spoke with a Commodore Loveland and shared the video. With many apologizes, she explained that it was Federation Policy to observed but not interfere with any friendly civilization approaching the capabilities of faster than light travel as to be prepared to welcome said civilization into the intergalactic community once we had reached that particular technological milestone. Ms. Loveland also informed us that the facility had not been in service for over two Terran years, do to standard pullback procedures when light speed obtainment became imminent.”

Running her hand through her hair for a moment, she continued. “Commodore Loveland advised us that they believed they knew who the attackers were and with our permission they would investigate and if possible, remove said threat. We never from her again. Two weeks ago, we received word that the Dresden was en route to establish formal diplomatic relations with our people and we were honestly relieved… hoping that with formal ties to the Federation, we could finally have the resources to eradicate those that… haunt… The Forbidden Zone once and for all.”

Condor

“I say we take off and nuke the site from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.” Orin said deadpan before cracking a smile, “I loved that line. But seriously, the Jem’Hadar are like bugs that are really difficult to get rid of.”

Orin looked around noting the massive amounts of work that the facility was calling for. It pulled at him but he wasn’t sure he would be allowed to do anything as he was technically an outsider.

-LtC Orin Losc, Engineering

Hannibal nodded, deep in thought. “They are indeed. This Commondore Loveland failed to mention that when we were briefed on this mission.” He paused as he considered his options.

“I doubt that the Dresden will be able to provide much support. I think we are back to me going in there alone. But I will need a distraction, and” He turned to Losc. “A way out there with a bang,”

-COS

The General sighed but couldn’t help the slight smile. “It’s your funeral Lieutenant.” She chuckled and then continued. “We can get you to within a kilometer of that facility but my people go no further. You’ll be on your own. We do…” Her smile widened. “… have a rather vast array of artillery. If a boom you want, a boom you’ll get.”

Condor

“I’m an engineer not a demolitionist, but I’ll see what I can do.” Orin responded as he started looking around for things to make an improvised explosive with.

Orin paused and turned to Hannibal.

“Why are you going in there in the first place? The Dresden can literally vaporize the area from orbit. Is this some hero complex you have going?”

-LtC Orin Losc, Engineering

Hannibal understood both concerns, he turned to face Losc and the General. “I understand. It’s not a death wish or hero complex. I spent almost 20 years in Star fleet intelligence. In that time I spent many years undercover. I also don’t like unanswered questions. They captured our Captain and Intelligence officer for a reason, they invaded your planet for a reason. I would like to find out why. I will only get that information with your approval General, this is your planet.” He offered.

-COS

Orin shrugged and turned away. He was going to see if he could whip up some small charges with smart proximity detonators.

-LtC Orin Losc, Engineering

Shuan had to like the man’s… spunk? With a slight smile, the General gave a simple nod. “Then you should know, while our Artillery is very accurate, we won’t go in there until we know for certain these… creatures… are gone. It’s just not worth the risk. If you just need explosives, we can happily give you all that you can carry. Sound like a deal?” She smiled wider.

Condor

It was at that moment that Hannibal realized that he was getting ahead of himself. He wasn’t sure why he hadn’t realized it before. Maybe it was because he so desperately wanted to prove to everyone in Starfleet that he could still do that job. Maybe prove to star fleet that he was completely innocent in what had happened with those children. Prove to everyone that he still had it. Or was he just trying to prove it to himself.

“I’m sorry General, I seem to be getting ahead of my self. I didn’t even think to ask if you even wanted intelligence on who and why these creatures were here on your planet? I became so focused on trying to rescue my shipmates that I didn’t think to ask you for permission.” He felt a little deflated at how he had let his ego and his own personally quest for redemption to interfere with his judgement.
